Works great with 12 year old DELL 2005FPW 20" LCD

I got a bargain store HDMI to DVI cable for my old DELL 2005FPW 20" LCD and then connected it to my 15" MacBook Pro with touch bar using this USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. I was immediately prompted to install an update for the adapter. I've never had an adapter require an update, but I allowed it to update. It prompted me to restart my computer which I did, and I've had zero issues with this adapter. It's been two weeks and I'm able to charge my MacBook and drive the 12 year old DELL LCD with no problems. I had previously purchased a BENFEI brand adapter from Amazon for $18. It worked ok for about two months, and then it just stopped working. I was never able to charge my MBP via the BENFEI adapter either, so I guess it's a case of getting what you pay for.

I hesitated to purchase this with all the negative reviews, but so far I've had no problems.

Doesn't work most of the time

I have two 27" external monitors, so I bought two Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapters so I could hook both up (they don't support USB-C or Thunderbolt 3, only Display Port and HDMI). They work horribly, usually flashing the monitor on and off like it's detecting it and then switching back off. Sometimes, I can hook everything up in a certain order and get them to work, but sometimes I only get one monitor to work and other times neither.

One solitary good thing: I don't seem to have much trouble if I'm trying to use displays that are 1920x1080 or less.

It's ridiculous that Apple hasn't figured these things out so I can use my existing monitors on my new MacBook Pro that I spent over $4,000 on. My workflow is less efficient now than on my old MacBook Pro, all due to this adapter failing to work as it is supposed to.

The thing simply doesn't work after a few months. I hate everything about this computer and the completely stupid way that Apple designed it. Avoid anything having to do with this adapter like the plague.

    Apple mis-advertises this product.

It works for hdmi and usb 3.0 port. But the usb-c port is for charging only. You cannot cascade two adapters or another usb-c adapter by using the usb-c port. You need to plug it into the macbook directly.

I bought two of these adapters assuming they are standard usb-c ports... Now I need to plug 4 sockets instead of 2, everytime I move my laptop from my desk.

    1 star for mis-advertising...

    frustrating and expensive disappointment

I am on my third one of these adapters and its works sporadically - sometimes the HDMI monitor and USB drive work with this adpater and other times they do not. Regardless of which port I plug it into, when it is not recognized, nothing makes it work. And when it won't connect/work it seems to inactivate all the other USB-c ports on my MacBook Pro with touchbar. In those instances I have found that putting the MBP to sleep rarely fixes the connection issue, so I end up rebooting the system to get this adpater to work.. When it works (maybe 1/3 of the time) it seems fine. I have updated the driver to 1.0 as recommended the first time I plugged in the adapter. I'm hopeful Apple fixes this issue. I need a reliable, functioning adapter for HDMI output.

external ssd issues with time machine

This adapter will NOT work with a external sad paged into it with Time machine. It says disk not available even though it is showing on the desktop. Exchanged adapter she issue. Plugging in the drive to a 2 dollar USB C adapter worked fine. I don't pay apple prices just to have a nonfunctional adaptor.

USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter does not support USB-3 hard drives. I just went to initialize a new drive and it trashed it. WTF why would you have an adapter for USB C and not allow it to do all the things we need to do.m Its not just for a lame usb for my iPhone or pad, STUPID!

    HDMI will drive you crazy

This is insane. I need HDMI for work, as I use two external monitors. Since getting a Macbook and having to use the multiport adapter, the screen flickers no less than every 2 minutes. Apple really needs to fix this, and then ship everyone who is affected new adapters if that's what it takes. No reason I should have to pay $80 for ANOTHER dongle.

Works maybe 20% of the time

For some inexplicable reason the HDMI on this connector only works 20% of the time at best. Absolutely appalled at how bad this accessory is, making my MBP essentially unusable.

4K External monitor flickering with new MacBook Pro touchbar

Tried two different 4k monitors (Samsung and EIZO) and two different USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter from Apple. also bought latest High Speed HDMI gold plated cables. Nothing works! It's a nightmare as a photograph to work in these conditions. Every 20 seconds or so the external monitor flickers a few times!! What can we do??

    Upgrade First before connecting display

Before you connect the adapter to the external display make sure you connected to your MacBook Pro 2016 model while is on, That way it can update the drivers and you don't have any issues with it. It will ask if you want to upgrade click yes and let it do it's thing. After upgrading it connect your display and you shouldn't have any issues with it. This adapter is a must!

    Another step backward..

Disappointedly, my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) kernel panic'd and trashed my work and the comment I started, which will be less positive again.
The adaptor is rubbish. Video latency is rubbish and the video "quality" isn't.
I have a bag full of mini display/thunderbolt 2 adaptors which worked great. Now I need a USB-C > Thunderbolt 2 adaptor which doesn't support mini display and the multiport is rubbish... Should have though a bit more before buying Mac again :-(
    End rant.

    Mostly Works as Published

It does what it says, but has somewhat shallow limits. I can plug an HD dell monitor into my MacBook Pro while also charging the MacBook Pro and plug a usb device into my computer. The problem is, I love the style of just having one plug into my computer (ideally this adapter) but when I plug a usb hub into the adapter, I can only plug one or two items into the hub before the adapter gets overloaded. Usually that happens when I plug two power drawing devices in at the same time. Otherwise, works as stated.

    Shame Shame

I've bought 20 different Mac products and even sold them in college. This MacBook 13" with only USB-C is the first one I'm ashamed to have purchased for my daughter. First of all, the multiport adapter doesn't work with all devices. I've spent hours trying to figure out how to restore a backup from usb to usb-c. What a waste of money. Apple should be ashamed of what it has become. Steve Jobs would have been ashamed.

    Works but only sometimes

External monitor displays fuzz for 20 seconds when the MacBook wakes up before the picture goes blank and only then displays properly. If you are able to wait the ~20 seconds of fuzz and noise before you can get back to work then the adapter will be ok for you. Aside from the basic functionality gripe - MacBook sound controls (volume up, down, mute, etc.) are rendered inoperable as the adapter relies on your monitors controls for sound functions. The sound works but it is an annoyance that you must fiddle with monitor buttons instead of using the laptop controls.

I Don't Understand All The Bad Reviews!

I was deciding wether I should buy this cable for my 2016 MacBook Pro 13 in with Touchbar. I bought it anyway because I wanted to give it a fair chance. I get home and it works just as expected. Plus I get to charge and use USB devices from the same adapter which is great. This cable is awesome and I use it all the time. I definitely recommend it!

I purchased this adapter for use to backup my businesses 12 TB G-RAID removable hard drive. This adapter does not work with the 2016 Macbook pro 13 or 15". I had to use my thunderbolt displays slow USB 2 built in port. Apple really screwed this up, forcing us to purchase additional products.

AVOID. It's one of very very few adapters that will allow you to connect new MBP to external monitors via HDMI. I bought two to run two external brand new monitors and they constantly go in and out AND crash my entire MBP!!! I love the new MBP but not if I can't use it at the office with dual monitors.... what a joke of a product and what a massive disaster Apple has on their hands for connectivity and reliability to external devices. DON'T BUY!!! Get your game together Apple.
