    Disaster ...

Projectors flicker, printers unrecognized, harddrives unable to backup ... totally inappropriate for university teaching environment. Big time fail.

I would give it no stars...

Multiport Adapter - works fine with new MacbookPro

I bought the USB-C VGA multiport adapter with my new MacBookPro (with function keys and only two USB C ports).
Set up the MacBook Pro in the Covent Garden Apple Store (helpful, intelligent staff) and used it to run a Powerpoint presentation (with VGA cable to external monitor) in Dubai the next day. Everything worked FINE.
I have now run courses in six different locations, with different screens and VGA adaptors in each place, and had only one problem: at the third venue I closed the lid of my Macbook before going to lunch. On return I lifted the lid of the MacBook, screen came to life immediately ... but had intermittent flashing black windows opening and closing. Minor panic ... but after disconnecting the multiport adapter and reconnecting, everything worked fine.
Also, having read negative comments about having to have an external adapter in the first place, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy was to tuck the adapter (with VGA, USB and Power cables connected) around the back of my MacBook so that they didn't get in the way at the side.

    Best compared to others

Went to Best Buy and picked up the same thing but by Insigna brand. Actually bought 2 different ones by that brand just to make sure it worked for my MacBook 12 inch. This was important due to me using it to run a 15,000 lumen projector advertisement for a big brand client. THe insignia adapters cost more than this adapter now costs. THe projection looked low resolution the first 2 nights and after testing everything with frustration I went to Best Buy and bought the Apple brand. As soon as I plugged into the mac, it asked to install an update, restart and then another update and restart. The image ended up looking high resolution and all issues were cleared up.

I learned my lesson to only buy Apple gear versus the other junk even though the price is close to the same. I see a lot of negative reviews about this adapter on this site but it seems Apple has cleared up the issues, whatever they were. If i can run a 500 inch screen using this thing, you should be able to run a monitor.

    Various problems but no alternatives

The positive is that this adapter works all of the time for an Apple extended keyboard, most of the time when driving a VGA monitor and some of the time for thumb drives and other external hard drives.

For some currently unknown reason, the video on an external monitor glitches periodically to a low resolution and the only way to reset it is to change the resolution to some other value and then back to best for monitor setting.

I have found it best to not use this adapter with external USB drives of any kind. Sometimes the drive decides to unmount in the middle of a read or write operation--Not good for data integrity or drive performance.

The biggest negative is that there are no documented alternatives that do not have similar poor reviews. I guess this line of netbooks, oh, sorry, premium Apple notebooks with USB-C really isn't meant to be used with any external peripherals ... other than a charger and a set of ... headphones ...

    Poor!

Bought this genuine product after having tried a cheaper alternative that didn't work well with many monitors; unfortunately this is not much better!

I needed it to perform with a VGA projector this morning to show a PowerPoint presentation to a client and the screen kept going black then coming back on. It's done this before with other devices and when in use the image doesn't always fill the connected screen correctly when using in second monitor, rather than mirrored mode (mirrored is worse as the adaptor often defaults devices to 800x 600!

Yes, before someone asks I'm fully up to date with drivers etc. and the same screens and devices all work seamlessly with my old MacBook Air and apple VGA adaptors.
Yes I've tried various settings to correct issues without success.

This is a major problem as with a new MacBook I've no other way of connecting screens and projectors that don't have a HDMI output.

If Apple support read this I'd be happy to hear their views as to why this product appears so flawed, and how I can get these issues addressed given it is soooo expensive!

    Poor quality - uninspiring design - a reluctant 'must-have'

I have a sleek aluminium Macbook with this piece of white plastic sticking out of it. The VGA adapter is the only way to guarantee a connection to most screens without having to carry a pocket full of similar very expensive adapters. Couldn't the gurus of Apple come up with something that at least looks as if it was designed to go on a Macbook?

Technically not very good - My new Apple DVD USB drive has had issues drawing enough power from the single USB socket

And it has now broken - the VGA still works but power does not go through it. It is only a couple of months old.

A very poorly designed expensive product.

    Works fine.

Ironic, this same product gets 5/5 stars on Amazon yet all the hate on Apple.com. It does what it's supposed to do.

    very average

My main complaint is that no matter what I do, just can't get my computer to connect to a monitor. I think the vga component of the adapter doesn't work very well.

Power is fine. USB input works most of the time, however does not connect to my toshiba harddrive for some reason.

    Useless since last update

Everything has been said already about the price, the aesthetics, the inconvenience, etc. of this product but it just stopped working after the latest firmware update -- unless you're ready to reboot at least once a day: it sure works, for a few hours, and then the LED of your drive lights up, you hear the drive spin (if that kind of drive) but it no longer mounts, until you reboot. C'mon, what is this? Not even worth a single star...
