Perfect replacement - a step up from older model

    • Written by Mark B from Rotherham

Wanted to give a bit of background, I am a professional writer, so my keyboard is pretty important to me. Around 6 months ago I ended up with a new keyboard after my previous keyboard got wet (disaster)!

So I went to the Apple store and bought a new one. My old one was more angled, due to the battery storage, so the angle was something I had to get used to. There were also two other major changes. The buttons were more low profile, so they were closer to the aluminum board. The benefit of this is it is much easier to clean, so in 6 months time you won't be left with a horrible keyboard. The spacing of the keys is also a lot better in my opinion, as they are slightly closer together.

This isn't where the benefits end. The battery life on this is nothing short of amazing. With writing so much, I'd expect to have to charge this every 48 hours, most of the time I'm looking at weeks between each charge.

Sorry for the reality check, but anyone who is complaining about the noise of the keys has a terrible typing technique. Skimming the buttons with a light touch means that you can type really quietly. If you are dropping your fingers from 3/4cm then it is going to make a fair amount of noise. That isn't the keyboards fault, more your heavy fingers :)

    A fantastic keyboard

    • Written by Maxime R from London

    Things I like:
    - The key-feel and overall typing experience is the best I've come across - and I've gone through a fair few chiclet / cherry mx / topre keyboards in my quest for typing perfection! This keyboard is quiet and free of annoying 'clacks' (which some keyboards are bad for; particularly with the space bar), however on firmer key presses there is a satisfying click as the key bottoms out. The key travel is (imo) excellent; not far enough to cause strain to the wrists as I have experienced after extended use of mechanical keyboards, however long enough to feel the key register properly (unlike perhaps the newer MacBook Pros' keyboards).
    - The key layout (on the British English variant in my case) is also great - particularly, I like how Apple places the backslash / vertical pipe key (\|) to the left of the enter key (which makes writing LaTeX and shell scripts much more ergonomic) as well as the position of the tilde / backtick key (~`) under the left pinky (rather than in the top left which is often a bit of a stretch). While the physical surfaces of the keys are flat (some folks prefer them slightly concave; I don't mind), the surface available to type on is very large (larger than most mechanical keys caps) which has increased my typing accuracy and speed somewhat. The glorious size of the escape key will also please vim users who haven't re-mapped it to something else already :)
    - Setup is a breeze, with no configuration to do for both MacOS and Linux when using the lightning to USB cable. Bluetooth setup on both operating systems is equally trivial and pain free.

    Things I don't like:
Perhaps the construction could be slightly sturdier; there is a slight flex in the keyboard although that said, I appreciate the portability and lightness.

A bit pricy but good all around keyboard

    • Written by Hayden K from Greensboro

This keyboard had a great range and a good build quality. It is very easy to use and connect with your Mac or IOS device. It is very sleek and has a great minimalistic look, while still being comfortable to type on. Battery life is perfect, this will last weeks without charging. My only complaint is the price, $100 and $130 (space grey) is a bit steep for a keyboard especially one that's not backlit. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a minimalist look for their work environment and ease of connectivity and use with no extra cords or bluetooth receivers to plug in. Just be ready to pay a premium price or buy one used like I did!

    Nice compact keyboard

    • Written by Gison L from Scottsdale

I bought this keyboard to use it with my MacBook 2019. I just like to use a separate keyboard from my portable. I like the light weight and wireless feature. It communicates instantly with the portable. After getting familiar with the layout, I will say that the quality and functionality is great.
The keys are quite low and the travel is minimal. Therefore, it took practice to use it proficiently.
The keyboard is well manufactured and I like how long the battery charge can last.

    The Best Keyboard

    • Written by Se Hyuk P from Evanston

I am a big fan of this keyboard. I think this keyboard is an improvement on the previous generation, and I am willing to stick to this keyboard as long as I can. I can type faster with this keyboard, and I like the shallow travel but with good tactile feedback. Personally, I feel this keyboard is the best implementation of the butterfly mechanism. Apple should implement this keyboard to their new MacBook line up.

    It's great..!

    • Written by Raoul W from Annapolis

Just bought the magic keyboard and magic mouse for my 27" iMac. I'd had the regular battery operated keyboard and mouse before. They're both fantastic! I do a lot of work in Photoshop as well as write emails, browse the Net, etc.. Everything functions perfectly. This keyboard doesn't angle quite as high as the former one, but it is comfortable to use. Both keyboard and mouse charges last a long time and recharge quickly. Highly recommend..!

    love it

    • Written by Lev D from New York

I've used this keyboard for over 2 years. I've used it's predecessor for 3 years. This one is my favorite. Without the numpad, the travel distance from keyboard to touchpad is very short and therefore very convenient. The keyboard+touchpad surface area on my small desk is small enough for a cup of coffee. Internal battery life is superb. Keys are perfect.

Looking forward to the space gray version!

    Best keyboard of its time

    • Written by Jon K from Madison

I've used this keyboard side-by-side several different kinds; giving each an adequate amount of time to get used to. This keyboard comes out on top every time. It initially feels different--almost harder to type with. Once that goes away, the keys are the most satisfying I've found. Weird to get so attached to a keyboard, but it really is well designed.

    Great Keyboard!

    • Written by NENA M from RICHMOND

I love it! I don't know why people have given this such bad reviews. I've had Macbook Pros for years and still do. I decided to get a bigger computer for work and I love the keyboard. It is nice since it is wireless and I can position it anywhere on my desk. I can store it under the monitor when I'm finished or wherever. The charge on it keeps for months. Sure the keys are semi-loud, but that is any keyboard. Actually, it sounds better than the Macbook pro touch. My husband can't stand when I type on that. I've had nothing but good things to say about this keyboard and it's super lightweight!

    Best Bluetooth Keyboard Out There

    • Written by Logan S from Gilbert

I bought this Bluetooth keyboard when using my MacBook Pro with an external monitor and couldn't be happier. The keyboard is the exact same size and the one on the MacBook Pro (possibly other MacBooks as well) so you do not have to keep switching back and forth between layouts, but can get used to the same exact distance and spacing between keys, allowing you to always type very quickly. Additionally, the feel of the keys is very similar to the MacBook Pro 2015, with a similar travel distance, which gives a nice feel when typing, better than the butterfly keyboards of the newer models in my opinion. This is probably not a good keyboard if you like the feel of mechanical keyboards, but if you want an external keyboard that has the feel and efficiency of a top-of-the-line laptop keyboard this is the only one that you should consider. While it is definitely expensive compared to other external keyboards, which can cost as little as $10, this is certainly my top pick, even over the Apple numeric keyboard, due to issues I have heard related to bending, and the more minimalistic feel given by excluding the number pad that I would hardly use anyway.

The MacBook Pro should have this keyboard

    • Written by David K from Basalt

This is the best keyboard I've used. I'm a loud typer and make people crazy with the sound of the last generation MacBook Pro (worse keyboard ever). I use this standalone on both my iMac and MacBook pro. Huge improvement and super fast typing. I'm not sure what additional functionality people were expecting. What you see is what you get. If you want a trackpad or a 10 key order them separately or order the huge bluetooth keyboard. APPLE, please listen and fix the cheap sound of the MacBook pro keyboard - it doesn't need to make any noise at all and in quiet meetings it is totally obnoxious.

    I like it!

    • Written by Konrad G from Poughkeepsie

Good keyboard. It's low profile, but I find it easier to type on than on traditional keyboards with higher raised keys. Compared to the old apple magic keyboard, I prefer this one since it doesn't have the round bump on the back for double AA batteries. The built in battery is much more convenient, and its just a nice looking keyboard.

    Fab key board

    • Written by Nadeem M from London

The feedback is mixed but I think that reflects a lot of personal preference and writing styles with keyboards.

I had the older more angled battery one - I let it down by leaving it dormant in a box during a long move, and the batteries leaked out.

I use the large iPad PRO, and never liked any of the attachable keyboards.

I bought the most fabulous stand from a German-Italian wood product company - Yohann. Now I have the keyboard, and it feels brilliant. The writing experience is very positive. The keys are responsive and have improved my typing. Like all Apple products, the keyboard is a pleasure to handle and move around. It’s simplicity, shape and easy to charge system - I think its better than the older version, Much better.

Always cheaper options out there. Buy cheap. Cry everyday. Buy quality. Cry once.

    Best keyboard I've used

    • Written by Ben H from York

    Pros:
    - Comes with a Lightning cable.
    - Looks great, I like the thin wedge shape.
    - Simple. I hate those gaming keyboards that light up all different colors and give you a headache. This is just a silver keyboard with white plastic keys.
    - Works great. Characters appear instantly on the screen without any latency.
    - Holds a very long charge and charges very quickly.

    Cons:
    - Not backlit like the notebook keyboards are.
    - Its almost too thin, so it has the tendency to bend a little bit if you press the keys too hard.
    - The keys are thin and close together which might take some getting used to.
    - Very expensive.

    Tried and True

    • Written by Jeff W from Rohnert Park

As a software engineer I use a keyboard very often and having the keyboard match my laptop keyboard is very helpful with muscle memory of keys. The battery seems to last forever (it's never run out on me) and the lightning charging cable is great for swapping between other devices. I've used the same one day in and day out at home and the office for close to three years now. It's been toted in motorcycle and bicycle saddlebags in all types of weather with only it's original cardboard box as it's case. Literally, the only downside is its price – like most all Apple products. Cheers!

    Exactly what was shown

    • Written by Erik B from San Antonio

This is a good keyboard. It's an apple product, so it connects easily. It charges easily. It holds a charge a long time. It's exactly the dimensions explained. It's white, small, thin, and easy to type on, like my mac keyboard. It's a tad closer to the table because it's not part of a computer.

    I'm glad I bought it.
