My remote lived for 10 minutes

...and then it fell off the electronics stack, about 12 inches high, and shattered. I was stunned. Are you kidding? The best industrial designers in the world, and their very cool, very new product shatters that easily? I buy every new Apple product that comes to market, and own a small ton of their stock, but this is just wrong. Apple should replace these for free, as it can only be characterized as a design flaw. The leading edge should not be the most fragile part of the equipment. Really?

Shattered 2 remotes in 1 week!

The remote functionality is great, however, it is very fragile and we have managed to shatter 2 within a week. At $80 replacement cost we could have now bought a second Apple TV. Not good.

Remote shattered within one day of use

After only one day out of the box, this remote slipped out of my hands and shattered on my tile floor. It is very slippery, and very fragile.
Clearly a design flaw by Apple, but they will gladly accept your $79 for a replacement. Since it broke so soon after purchase, I called Apple, but they "don't cover accidental damage" even for a disappointed customer only one day into enjoying their product. Ultimately, I claimed against my credit card's purchase protection insurance. Thank you Mastercard, but Apple - remotes get dropped, and we don't expect to have to purchase a case to protect them. Very disappointed.

Worst Apple product I have owned

I have been using Apple products since the 80s and always been a fan, yeah I have drank the Kool-Aid. I have always said that Apple builds great products and they will outlast any competitors products. That said... The idea of this remote is great with all of the functions that you are able to do with this remote, but really it is just an idea. It is just my wife, myself and out 2 month old who hasn't figured out the concept of grasp objects yet. The home button on this remote doesn't work anymore. We haven't dropped it, sat on it, thrown it, dripped it in water, or anything else other then press some buttons, talk to it, and try to figure out which side is the touchpad. Not sure what happened but after 5 months of use the button has decided not to work. the worst part is that I might as well just buy a new Apple TV instead of this remote since it is half the cost. Luckily the old AppleTV remote will work with the new box however you won't be able to use Siri with it, you can't even use her with the remote app on the phone which I know has a microphone in it.

    Shatters SO easily

We have had our new Apple TV for about a month. On the remotes first drop it shattered. It is very smooth and very slippery to hold. Falls very easily and shatters! Be carful too, lots of tiny glass pieces.

    Very Fragile !!

I would have given five stars until just a moment ago. The remote was in its normal spot on the arm of my recliner. I got up for a glass of water and it fell off the arm to the carpet below, flipped over onto the tile by the fireplace and shattered! I have to agree with so many others. For the first time apple has left a bad taste in my mouth. I feel ripped off, the product works so well that I will have to replace it. It feels like making it this fragile had to be on purpose. Please be careful Apple, even your most ardent supporters may start to question their loyalty.
P.S. I just tried putting a piece of Gorilla tape over a portion of the shattered track pad. It still picks up my fingers movements and allows use of the remote without cutting myself. Will work until I can save up for a replacement!

Too bad this remote is too slick for it's own good

Everyone goes on about how fragile the thing is. I haven't broken it yet, but I hate the ergonomics. In a dimly lit room, it's hard to tell which end is which, so we are always grabbing the wrong end of it. Although I guess the small size is "great", we also are constantly misplacing the darned thing. For $79 it ought to at least be able to beep for you to locate it.

The symmetry of the design, although sleek, really detracts from the functionality. Good example of 'design before function'. I've grown to expect more from Apple than this poor design.

Remote cost more than a 3rd gen Apple TV. HUH?!

I was over my cousins house on vacation and was using his Apple TV, fell asleep, got up, remote slipped off the couch from about 1.5 ft. Now I owe him an over priced remote because the glossy tile broke and the remote casing dented. I felt really bad I had to let him know I broke his brand new remote for his brand new Apple TV that he had gotten as a gift from his Girlfriend of 12+ yrs. Makes some people start wondering if it all to help sell cases in the stores. I own good amount of apple products and have continued to buy apple product because they didn't punish me for being human.

    Far too fragile

Continuing Apple's obsession with making each product more fragile than the previous versions, this remote is ridiculous. There's no reason for the front to be made of glass, and it breaks if dropped less than a couple feet onto hardwood. Replacing it is half the cost of the entire 4th Apple TV.

Too fragile for the real world

The touchpad portion of the remote shattered within 2 days of buying. This is just too fragile to be a remote control that should be able to withstand normal wear and tear. The apple TV is great, but the remote is over half the cost and will not last. Apple needs to redesign with a more durable plastic or glass and needs to revamp the app for the iphone to just eliminate this remote all together. Buyer beware if you do not live in a bubble wrap house.

Poor quality materials. Shatters under minimal force.

I just bought my 4th Gen Apple TV today. Within 5 minutes of unboxing, I dropped the remote about 15" on to a glass surface end table and the entire surface of the remote shattered. Who decided that thin, fragile glass was a good idea on a small, lightweight gyroscopic remote control? Setting aside the issue of substandard materials and potential consumer safety concerns with easily shattered glass (I had to vacuum up all the shards), it is puzzling that the replacement cost for such a poorly constructed piece of equipment amounts to more than 50% of the price of the original Apple TV package. Very disappointing, Apple. I think I'll just get a Firestick or Roku for my other TVs.

If only I could rate no stars I would

Apple TV remote is horrible it fell like 4 inchs and shattered what made me mad is the fact I got to pick it up and cut my self on the glass now I have to pay for the remote replacement and find a place to get a cover so I won't have this issue again love the system hate the remote Apple should have thought about it and at the very least covered it under the warranty

    Too fragile, buyer beware.

The remote functions well, track pad and buttons are responsive. But chances are that if you are here trying to buy one, it's likely due to the fact that yours broke. The part of the case that surrounds the volume and home buttons is made of EXTREMELY fragile glass. This design flaw is a deal breaker. I realize that there is a level of precaution that you must take when purchasing products like ipads, phones etc... but this is a remote control for your television. Why would Apple make a gyroscopic hand held device used for gaming and line it with glass... then charge more then half the cost of the entire device to replace it?!?

Apple hardware has always been top notch, I usually don't mind paying paying extra for the additional quality that Apple is known for. But for the first time I feel cheated. It almost feels as if Apple purposely chose a breakable material in order to generate profit from remote sales. A simple change of material could have easily bumped up this review to 4 or 5 stars instead of 1.

    Shattered and slippery

To those of you who are thinking of buying the new Apple TV let me just say I love the remote and everything about the actual Apple TV. The only problem in the remote. The bottom half shatter from a slight fall and the top right corner of the touchpad chipped from falling on a soft wooden floor. I recommend to buy a case while I go to the Apple Store and yell at them to try and give me a new remote

Good remote, desperately needs "locate" feature,

The remote worked well for me, and now I have spent 2 weeks tearing up every corner of my apartment trying to find it. It is so slim and so small that it is easily lost - previously I'd been lucky enough to find it. It really needs a locate feature.

I either need to find it or learn to live without it, cause there is no way it is worth it to spend $80 for a replacement.

    Too fragile

Yeah- such an AWESOME concept and I love the remote. But I only had it for 3 days and the remote face shattered. Dropped from a height of less than 3 feet landing face-first on a hard wood floor. Apple was VERY kind enough to give me a new remote since I only had it less than a week which I deeply appreciate and it shows their class of service. But now I'm afraid to use it. Can you imagine getting charged $80 any time you drop something? Can you imagine wearing all your remotes on your arms with a loop strap?

Looks great, fragile and easy to lose

Needs some kind of protection for the glass, bottom line. Also should not cost over half the price of the whole Apple TV package, just for the remote. With that price, it needs some kind of locator if lost like an iPhone. Other than that, it's a nice feeling remote that does seem to work well.

    Made of glass

Beware this remote is made of glass. Mine cracked from a couch drop to a wood floor. $80 to replace is appalling.

Looks pretty but an ergonomically uncomfortable PITA !!

It seems that half the time I pickup this remote I have it in the wrong orientation. It's too symmetrical so instead of having the touchpad up, I often have it in my palm instead. And when I do have it in the correct orientation the touch sensitive area is often too sensitive. This thing is just plain ergonomically uncomfortable to me. But I don't like the Apple Magic Mouse either so maybe it's just me. I use an old-school Logitech bluetooth mouse with a real scroll wheel and Left/Right buttons. Sometimes "pretty" isn't always better, but that's just how Apple rolls.
