There are a few key design flaws in the smart folio keyboard. First off, the keyboard only has two angle place settings for the iPad instead of a full range of angles to choose from. This can get very frustrating for flexibility of use. Second, the keys do not light up, making it extremely difficult to type at night or in dark spaces which is very inconvenient for a student. Third, there is no cover for the keyboard keys if you want to fold the keyboard back and just use the iPad but keep the smart folio keyboard on; leaving the buttons flipped on the bottom and touching whatever surface. Pretty disappointed considering how much this keyboard costs. Apple could have done way better for their customers with this product.

Feels cheap and the connection is sketchy

    • Written by Rob W from Barnsley

I had the previous version of this which had many issues to the point Apple extended the repair period for three years. Similar issues remain here and it feels even cheaper than the previous version! AVOID! There are better options, including writing by hand onto paper, taking a photo then throwing it in the bin.

    Not recommend it

    • Written by Alper U from Clifton

It is a shame for Apple that this case’s built quality and materials. First of all with that price you really expect something more durable and wont fall off after a month use. It literally totaled from bottom to top. Edges start to lift at a point that I can see the hard materials of the case. I am very ready and willing pay more on a Apple case. But with this quality I feel like robbed... Apple really needs to think and made better case for ipad pro 12.9 3rd generation. The color options are limited , there is no leather version of it... It is really bad. That should ve been fix... Wish there is a photo sharing option so that I can show you how bad my case become after a month use with nothing extreme just carying in backpack’s padded laptop part.

    Do not buy

    • Written by Rod C from CANTERBURY

I wished I had read the reviews. Very disappointed. I use the iPad for writing notes and when you flip it over you are touching the keyboard or the keyboard has to rest on a flat surface and then it scratches the key board. What a poor design from Apple. I have the older iPad Pro and keyboard. When you flip the older keyboard around it has an additional felt overlay protecting the keys and it also feels better when holding for writing or reading. What a waste of $300 and the amount of effort for me to return it when I do need it on the odd occasion is not worth it. I now have to spend another $150 on a protector case and carry the key board around with me and change over when I need to use a keyboard.

    Awful, just awful!

    • Written by Phil A from Heywood

I read all the reviews before purchasing and I was genuinely undecided, then I read one review that suggested I ignore all the haters... I'd of rather spent £200 on hot air if I am honest. Awful product, to spend circa £1000 on an iPad Pro to then purchase a Pencil for £120 - fine, that's Apple, but the additional for a keyboard that is like everyone says, ugly in its fit, feel and design - a complete failure in my eyes.

I suppose you have the convenience of the keyboard being a part of the case but most of the time I carry a rucksack or bag so in all honesty, I would buy a wireless keyboard - there are plenty that fold or roll up - you'll get a better result.

And to be fair, I mainly use this for design and drawing rather than typing and can do the minimal required via the keyboard on the pad, which we must have all gotten used to by now.

Overall, it's a pants product and I sometimes wish I could stand in the store all day and advise people not to buy it.

    Worse keyboard ever

    • Written by Micheal J from Springwater

I bought this keyboard as its an apple product. Here I sit day one with a new fancy iPad and this cheap keyboard. OMG, Apple what have you become. Never had anything so expensive and cheap feeling as this. Totally ruins the Apple experience for me.

Think its time to start thinking about the dark side, SP6. At least MS gives you a nice keyboard for the price.

Doesn't work for long after warranty expires

    • Written by BRIAN C from SCOTTSDALE

I was disappointed when my Smart Keyboard Folio for my iPad Pro 12.9 stopped working. It's bad enough that it doesn't work however to use as a cover the battery continues to drain. There are no instructions on how to turn the keyboard off so using it simply as a cover is no good.
I always think that if it's made by Apple it should be good long after the warranty expires.

Don’t waste your money on this folio

    • Written by Michael P from Ridgewood

I’ve had this since launch and I’m highly disappointed

    - It offers zero side protection
    - Mine has a weird defect ,were the material looks like its fading away
    - This Folio can scratch your case if you don’t clean it once a week
    - The Magnets that hold the iPad in place are not that strong - I’ve had situations were i was adjusting the screens position and the magnet holding the iPad just gave way and almost caused the iPad to free fall to oblivion.
-For The price its at right now, its just not worth it
-Your only able to adjust your iPad in 2 positions , and each position isnt good for me cause I’m pretty tall and it always involves me moving my iPad further away from me
-Functionality isn’t to good to, cant control volume - cant adjust screen brightness - cant pause videos on certain apps(i know this is a developer thing but still could of added like a pause button or something)- I constantly for some reason hit the caps lock key and that get super annoying-etc .

In conclusion, don’t waste your money , get a Logitech or any case that offers full screen and body protection cause I guarantee you that your iPad will get damaged eventually. I was lucky enough to get a replacement iPad and keyboard the 1st week after the folio scratched up my screen , but many months later, it is march and the folio finally decided to scratch my screen once again. I also have dents on the corners of my iPad just from leaving my iPad in my book bag, and don’t get me started with the bend gate 2.0 with this iPad . Just do your self a favor and get something else.

    Terrible waste of money

    • Written by Jessica G from Longmont

I love my iPad Pro, it's the best, and the pen is great too, I don't even have the newest one. But the keyboard, it's quite possibly the worst keyboard I've ever encountered. The thing does not work consistently at all. I thought maybe it was something I was doing like it was dirty or maybe there was a bug or who knows, but after weeks of struggling with the intermittent connections it has finally given up. It isn't old, it isn't abused. It's just worthless.

This is a piece of junk and ridiculously overpriced. For $200 it’s not backlit and it feels like cheap plastic. Some of the keys didn’t work on mine. Completely defeats the idea of using an iPad as a laptop. Very limited functionality. For an IPad that already cost about $1500, the unavailability of a decent keyboard is a disgrace.

The case isn't even good to begin with, let alone costing $300! The case is extremely uncomfortable to be used handheld with the keys rubbing against your fingers. More importantly, there are no function keys on the keyboard this was a huge deal breaker for me because without it, it almost defeats the purpose of having a keyboard in the first place. The case isn't that bad, I would overlook all these flaws if it was reasonably priced, but it's far from it.

    Quality Down The Drain

    • Written by Don V from Sonoma

I recently upgraded to the 3rd Gen iPad 12.9". What I used for it was the Logitech folio keyboard combination. The keyboard was very well made! This Apple version for the new iPad Pro is a big joke! The keys are not as responsive and the quality of the build is pretty questionable. Then priced at almost $200??? Who are you guys kidding?

I hope that Logitech comes out with their own version for new iPad. Otherwise, I'm looking into the new Brydge that's coming out soon!

Offers no protection for the iPad. Uncomfortable to hold. I bought a cheap alternative whilst waiting for this to arrive for under £20 and it’s more protective and has a space to safely store, and charge pen. This relies solidly on magnet, which won’t work in the modern world. I truly think this is the worst design apple have ever produced. Shocked actually. Do not waste your money. Buy a wireless keyboard and a more protective cover.

    Unreliable keyboard probably unnecessary

    • Written by Greg G from Buckhurst Hill

Apple's non-folio "smart" keyboards fail after quite a short life - 6 months to 2 years judging by reports and my own experience. There is no good reason to expect the "folio" version to perform any better so buy at your own risk.

It's also worth trying your iPad Pro without; I find the on-screen keyboard to be so much better than the one on smaller tablets that I haven't really missed the physical keyboard since it failed.

    Where’s the design smarts

    • Written by Simon C from Arana Hills

It’s pretty simple what is wrong with this keyboard ... the entire design. It’s heavy without offering protection. In fact the whole edge is exposed. It’s too easy to open it backwards when in a hurry, dropping the iPad, caseless, to the floor. Normal use can cause the folio to shift just enough to disconnect from the iPad and render the keyboard impotent. The only positives are this one is a little more stable than previous versions. I would give up that stability and more to be able to use the keyboard from the previous model. Clearly Apple had the marketing team not the design team work on this latest iteration and this experience has me reconsidering iPad as my preferred mobile productivity device. As a designer myself, I’m really disappointed by the obvious lack of forethought and vision that even most ID school graduates would conversely possess.

    Huge step backwards

    • Written by Thomas G from Bloomington

I just upgraded from a first gen 12.3 to the 3rd gen. I had the Apple keyboard case for it. Yeah, the whole thing was bulky, but it was very practical and worked well. Even the price wasn't too much of a stretch for the quality.

But this new one is overpriced junk. There are a lot of reasons listed in these reviews that I won't go over again, but much of what is mentioned, I agree with.

My major complaints are that the material feels cheap, compared to the old one. The edges are sharp, like the just left any extra plastic that squeezed out from the mold on the case, without removing and smoothing it down. The edges of the iPad are not protected at all. If you drop this on a corner, that's pretty much the end of your iPad, because the iPad itself is structurally weaker than the first gen. Lastly, whoever designed the keyboard needs to be retrained. The first gen smartly folded away to protect it when it was not needed. This one stays exposed and can get gummed up pretty easily, transferring whatever it's sitting in directly on to the screen when closed up.

Returned mine. For $200, a keyboard cover and case should be nearly perfect. This is far from it.

I know Apple likes an attractive design, I do as well. But why they keep making beautiful products that can't do the job is beyond me.
