  • Overview

Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.

Use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to connect your Mac to a standard analog monitor, projector, or LCD that uses a VGA connector or cable. Review the documentation or check with the manufacturer of your monitor to make sure you're choosing the right adapter.

      Doesn't work with data projectors

I found that it works fine with some small (20 inch) Samsung monitors that have a VGA input but it doesn't work with any of the data projectors I have in my university department so I can't use my new MacBook Pro (unipart aluminium case) for Powerpoint presentations, which was one of the main reasons for buying the laptop. The problem seems to be that the laptop senses the data projector ( and scales down the laptop display to VGA) but the projector doesn't detect the laptop (and so fails to display the image from the laptop screen). My old MacBookPro (Intel core duo) works fine with all data projectors (using the DVI to VGA adaptor) and I'm now in the silly position of having to use the old laptop for all travel (conferences etc) plus teaching in the university. The wonderful looking new MacBook Pro has to stay at home. Apple needs to issue a firmware fix or a better adaptor as soon as possible.

On the very first attempt to use it the picture flickered a bit but was otherwise OK. When the class ends I walk over to my second lecture and plug in my computer and the adapter and NOTHING happens. I try again and the screen on my mac goes dark then nothing. I have all my students walk back over to the last calssroom and the thing still doesn't work. My first lecture of the year was a real stinker as a result. Very disappointed. I spent the extra $20 because I thought I was buying quality... I was wrong. Go buy a generic knockoff. At least when it breaks you only spent $6

Great with flat TVs and projectors

I have used two of these for at least five years with MacBook Pro and Dell laptops without any issues. I normally use them to connect two laptops to flat TVs or a projector at home, but I regularly take either of these connectors on presentations to connect a laptop to projectors of different brands. I have never had any problems.

To pay over $30 for this and it doesn't work is just like pouring money down a rat hole. I wouldn't recommend this at all!

It works very well to output video to the decades-old and long since superseded VGA standard created by IBM. I actually have two: one for my desk, and one in my bag for when I go to the library or computer lab and want to use one of their monitors. For some reason it only seems to work in one of my DisplayPorts, but I think that’s because I damaged the other one. Another issue is that because it’s white, it collects dirt easily, but that’s easily erased. I would happily give one to a friend.
