  • Overview

Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.

Use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to connect your Mac to a standard analogue monitor, projector, or LCD that uses a VGA connector or cable. Review the documentation or check with the manufacturer of your monitor to make sure you're choosing the right adapter.

    System Requirements

Compatible with Mac computers with Mini DisplayPort and Thunderbolt ports

      Doesn't work with data projectors

I found that it works fine with some small (20 inch) Samsung monitors that have a VGA input but it doesn't work with any of the data projectors I have in my university department so I can't use my new MacBook Pro (unipart aluminium case) for Powerpoint presentations, which was one of the main reasons for buying the laptop. The problem seems to be that the laptop senses the data projector ( and scales down the laptop display to VGA) but the projector doesn't detect the laptop (and so fails to display the image from the laptop screen). My old MacBookPro (Intel core duo) works fine with all data projectors (using the DVI to VGA adaptor) and I'm now in the silly position of having to use the old laptop for all travel (conferences etc) plus teaching in the university. The wonderful looking new MacBook Pro has to stay at home. Apple needs to issue a firmware fix or a better adaptor as soon as possible.

On the very first attempt to use it the picture flickered a bit but was otherwise OK. When the class ends I walk over to my second lecture and plug in my computer and the adapter and NOTHING happens. I try again and the screen on my mac goes dark then nothing. I have all my students walk back over to the last calssroom and the thing still doesn't work. My first lecture of the year was a real stinker as a result. Very disappointed. I spent the extra $20 because I thought I was buying quality... I was wrong. Go buy a generic knockoff. At least when it breaks you only spent $6

The Monitor display was immaculate and looked even better than the 1920 X 1080 it showed in the display settings. I will be looking after it well for my future trips! Well worth the money for the hassle saved.

      Bad mini display port?

I was having problems with the proxima not connecting so bought another new adapter (both are apple brand). Had same problem with new adapter but it seems that the port may be bad because I can get it to connect by strategically adjusting the mini display cable "just right" in the port. Before you start messing with PRAM and the like, you may have a physical issue as I do...

Apple even decided to hide the "detect display button (you have to press the right "option" button on keyboard to get it to pop up), but even then, still cannot detect any external displays. Just like the company, this product is absolute trash. This is the last time I try to troubleshoot stuff like this on their horribly designed, overly-expensive products. Goodbye forever, apple-trash.
