Is this display compatible with the previous generation of Retina MacBook Pros?

Hi all, I'm wondering if this display is compatible with the previous generation of Retina MacBook Pros? More specifically, my 15" Mid 2014 Retina MacBook Pro (2.8GHz QC i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, GT 750M 2GB)? I know this display only has USB-C inputs, but if I bought one of Belkin's USB-A to USB-C cables, would it work? It is from my understanding that USB-C is really just a smaller, reversible version of USB 3.1. Thanks again, -Alex

As far as I can tell, it is not. I have a mid-2015 15" macbook pro with retina display, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16 gb of ram and Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics card.

I've tried it with TB 3 to TB 2 convertor and an HDMI cable, a USB-C to mini DisplayPort convertor and mini DisplayPort cable, and USB-C to 4k HDMI convertor with HDMI cable / port as well, all with no luck. The mac does connect to an old TV using the HDMI cord, so I don't think it's an issue with the mac. The plan from here is to call LG support and find out if there's ANYTHING I can do that will allow me to use the monitor with the mac. Otherwise, I sure hope they'll take it back at apple, since my company bought it and I've already discarded the box.

I'll update this answer if I find any combination that works.

  • Nope. Doesn't work with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) Running 10.12.1.
    Returning tomorrow.

  • Does NOT work with Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2015 with discrete graphics, using TB2 cable and Apple's Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter + Apple Thunderbolt Cable (0.5m) - White.

  • No.

The USB-C is running on Alternate Mode, which is not supported by your Mac.

Only New MacBook and MacBook Pro 2016 is compatible with this display.

  • It won't - tried it. Apple failed to mention clearly that this display work only with the 2016-released models that include Thunderbolt 3/ USB-C.

  • I've gone through this - and all the answers are WRONG. The display requirements explicitly state you must have a Mac with built-in USB-C ports. Those are the only Macs supported.

Even with the "correct" USB-C to DisplayPort adapters and cables, the monitor still is not recognized by older Macs with DisplayPort 1.2 / Thunderbolt 2 connectors.

  • You can use the existing thunderbolt 3 cable but use a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter.

  • No as this monitor is NOT a Thunderbolt device. It is using the USB C 3.1 specification for video, so Thunderbolt adapters will not work.

  • It is not compatible with other generations of macbook pro's. I would look into other LG monitors that offer alternative displays like mini display or hdmi

  • Apple support gave me a partial answer yesterday: [Early/mid 2015 rMBP 13" and 15"] " 30Hz refresh rate..".
The Dell 2415Q appears to have miniDP 1.2 compatibility +60Hz refresh rate, although neither Apple nor Dell will officially say it's supported.

  • Technically it should be, but you would need to buy an adaptor from Thunder bolt 2 to THUNBERBOLT 3
