What are my options to have an online backup for the airport time capsule

I am planning to purchase an AirPort Time Capsule to act as a NAS, so my iPhoto and iTunes folders will be located on it.

I hope this plan makes sense and other people are doing the same.

There shouldn't be any problem with this, but I would like to have it backed up online, in case it fails.

Do I have to run backup software such as CrashPlan from my macbook in order to have that, or does this device supports any type of online backup out of the box?

  • Not really sure where you are going here. This device is a backup system that leverages the OS built-in tools, Time Capsule. No other software is needed. Decently robust and braindead simple.

It really is not a NAS although you can use it to store files it is not a file server merely a backup device. Most NAS devices have built-in redundancy in addition to file server and other tools. The Airport Time Capsule is a single hard drive and therefore a single point of failure. Mine has given me 5 years of trouble free uptime but if you are looking for a more bullet proof back up and file server this may not be the solution. You may want to look at inexpensive NAS or Online Backup Companies.
