  • You are referring to the LG UltraFine 4K display which is a USB-C display using a single USB-C cable for USB-C DisplayPort alt mode (video) and USB 2.0 (data - for audio, USB ports, etc). The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Mid-2012 do not have USB-C ports. The Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter cannot output a USB-C with DisplayPort alt mode signal - it is only for connecting Thunderbolt devices. With a Thunderbolt device, you can give your computer a USB-C port with DisplayPort alt mode. However, I don't know of any Thunderbolt 2 devices that have such a port, so you'll need a Thunderbolt 3 device and connect it with the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. You'll need a Thunderbolt 3 device that has two Thunderbolt 3 ports (such as a Dock or RAID or PCIe Expansion box) or one Thunderbolt 3 port and one USB-C with DisplayPort alt mode port. A Thunderbolt 3 port can work as a Thunderbolt port (up to 40 Gbps) or a USB-C port (with USB speeds up to USB 3.1 gen 2 which is 10 Gbps) with DisplayPort 1.2 alt mode. The MacBook Air has Thunderbolt 2 (20 Gbps) with DisplayPort 1.2 (17.28 Gbps) which should support a 4K resolution. The display is 4096 x 2304 @ 60Hz, which is greater than the usual 3840 x 2160, so you might have to reduce the refresh rate or resolution. The MacBook Pro Mid-2012 only has Thunderbolt 1 (10 Gbps) with DisplayPort 1.1 (8.64 Gbps) so you'll definitely need to use a much greater reduced refresh rate or resolution such as 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz or 2560 x 1440 @ 60 Hz. 4096 x 2304 @ 30Hz might work, but I don't know the limits of the Intel HD Graphics 4000 or Apples driver. The manual does show different supported resolutions down to 1920 x 1080 and different refresh rates down to 30 Hz. The manual is inconsistent here. It states minimum horizontal and vertical refresh rates of 88 kHz and 48 Hz. Then it goes on to list some timings that use 66 KHz and 30 Hz.
