Macbook Pro w/ Retina vs. Macbook Pro vs. Macbook Air
I am a sophomore high school student. My dad accidentally dropped my 2009 Macbook Pro and I need to get a new computer. I am trying to decide which computer to get as there are many new types to choose from. I mostly use my computer for browsing (Facebook, games, etc.), music, watching movies, and writing papers. I was wondering which computer would be the best for me to buy?

You will most likely regret a 13" or even an 11" computer to write papers on (unless you use an external monitor). If you are writing papers go for a 15" MacBook Pro as I think the vertical resolution is very important! It's also a great plus over the 13" model and 16:9 laptops from other manufacturers when browsing the web. You simply see more. Also, you might consider upgrading the built in screen of the Pro to a Hi-Res Glossy or Antiglare display for an extra USD $100 or go with the Retina model.
Regarding gaming: The 15" also has the edge over the 13" Pro and Air. Problem with the Retina model is likely going to be Disk space and the lack of an optical drive as many games still come on DVDs.
If portability matters a lot to you, provided you don't play graphics intensive games and use an external display a 13" MacBook Pro or MacBook air might also be a viable option.
I use a 4 year old 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) which I upgraded over time to 8GB RAM and 640GB HDD and I'm quite happy with it. It got me through university and work and is still a strong machine.

The decision about which computer to get depends on what it will be used for now, what it might be used for in the time you own it, and how much you are willing to spend.
I would suggest you visit www[dot]apple[dot]com/why-mac/compare/notebooks.html to compare and see which model is best for you. Also visit www[dot]apple[dot]com/students/mac/to see what Apple has to offer to students.
All the best.
