Very, very, very disappointed in this drive!

    • Written by Renee F from Santa Cruz

I purchased this drive to use as a backup drive for my MacBook Pro, and purchased it along with my new Mac less than a year ago (in 2017). It had problems beginning in the first couple of months of use. It would eject itself before a backup was complete, then it seemed to work fine. Then it decided to eject itself before I could even start the backup with Time Machine. Now I can hear its disk spinning when I connect its cable to my Mac, but the drive will not mount and does not appear in the finder or on the desktop. This is my backup drive! It sits quietly in a padded bag inside a locked file cabinet. It has never been dropped. It is used once every few days for backup. It just died for no apparent reason. I will not purchase another LaCie drive after this experience. This is not a reliable drive.

    Works for me

I'm on my 4th Lacie 2tb rugged thunderbolt drive and just happened to check reviews here as a new one was just delivered from Amazon. Shocked is an understatement. I've never had a single issue with mine. My only complaint actually is about the Thunderbolt connection which is just not firm. Definitely have to make sure the cable isn't being tugged even slightly while in use. Otherwise, no issues.

Done exactly what it said it would do

LaCie 1TB Rugged Portable Hard Drive - Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 - we bought one of these for our small firm to work as the main drive. It has been fantastic and worked much better than the previous G-Drive. The purpose of having it was so that we could take it away and do offsite back ups every week. It has been great for this and performed without any hiccups or problems. It has also been better than the previous G-drive which occasionally seemed to hang due to a USB bus fault. No problems with this Lacie drive so far bee really great and reliable.

    Feeling concerned

    • Written by Donna J from Quincy

I have one that I purchased from Apple store about four years ago. Haven’t used much until recently. No problems with it so far. Love the feel and ease of it. Picked up a second one at Best Buy tonight decided to check latest reviews before I opened. Feeling concerned and will probably return now that I see so many people having issues.

    Highly Recommend!

    • Written by Alexandra S from Glastonbury

I'm really shocked to see all of these bad reviews on this because I have had absolutely NO problem whatsoever with this product. It comes with two different options of how to connect it to your laptop/ computer which honestly SAVED me from a meltdown yesterday. My laptop fell off of my bed yesterday while my lacie was still plugged into it. The metal plugin broke unfortunately, but at least I had another way to access the 10,000 photos I still had on it! As a photographer, I highly recommend this product to anyone wanting to put their photos on an external hard drive.

    LaCie just doesn't work

    • Written by Elizabeth R from Haverhill

I have purchased to LaCie external drives in the past 6 months to back up my photographs. Neither one currently works so that is $300 down the drain. On one hard drive the files cannot be retrieved and on the LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 2TB Portable Hard Drive LAC9000489 ($189!) it will not accept files. Will NOT BUY AGAIN!

Fried after 3 months - DO NOT BUY LACIE

    • Written by Zack M from Ancaster

This drive literally just lost $50,000 worth of travel footage that I had stored on it. Angry is an understatement. Lacie should be burnt to the ground for selling products like this. The sad part is I purchased this at an Apple Store. Mac should definitely be smarter about who they are parting with.

I stored all my photos and videos on this drive. I had it for one month and now keeps discounting at the slightest touch. When did does decide to connect it only does so for about 30mins. It's really frustrating! Do not buy.

    awful awful awful

    • Written by Rene Jean C from London

I saved all my startup data in this external drive and after 2 months it just gave up and I lost everything! I used the disk exclusively at home and it broke down anyways.

Do yourself a favour don't buy any LaCie hard drive.

    Disconnects at slightest touch.

    • Written by Joel H from Warrandyte

The plug must be really cheap or poorly made - disconnects at the slightest touch. An ok drive if you sit perfectly still on a desk with a desktop. Absolutely useless for a laptop and on the move.

    No Apple Formatting Encryption

This drive does not allow MacOS encryption when formatting it. It requires downloading special software to encrypt data. So, I'm sending mine back.

    Absolute nightmare

    • Written by Christopher Daniel B from Walnut

"Rugged"? Not a chance. I used it purely as an archive drive, i.e. copied files to it and put it away in a safe place. When the critical day came that I needed to restore lost data, the drive was corrupt. 100% data loss. Appears to be a hardware failure, as I can't even erase the device successfully. From the looks of the reviews, I'm not the first. Plus, the warranty expired a few months ago.

Total waste of money, time, and it left me feeling burned. I will never trust a LaCie (or Seagate for that matter) product again.

Does not live up to the hype.

    • Written by Luca P from Brooklyn

I bought this 'device at a Mac Store because I bought into the branding. A 'rugged' hard drive sounded good because I knew that I am accident prone. Within one month, my device feel about 1 meter from a chair as I was running time machine. Completely ruined it. Now I feel like a sucker.

The box said that this could withstand drops 'up to' 2 meters. I guess I should have read more carefully.

Don't buy into the advertising, and don't buy the LaCie Rugged Portable Hard Drive if you're hoping for a device that can withstand minor drops; it cannot do so reliably. I would have been better off shelling out a third of the price for a normal hard drive considering how 'rugged' this proved to be in practice.

Shameful of Apple to push this product

    • Written by Charles G from Steamboat springs

This drive is slow and buggy, It seems to delete things on its own and self ejects, it takes about 45 min to transfer 80 GB from computer to drive, even after all the troubleshooting. Using a new 2015 mac book pro fully upgraded, and have tried both thunderbolt and USB 3.0. This could be a great product if they could fix these issues, but until then i would not buy it.

    Quick, Simple, and Reliable

    • Written by Daniel S from Norman

I have had three of these hard drives. I purchased my first one in 2012 and have since purchased others. I use them daily. One of them is a dedicated back up for my iMac and the other two are used in my daily workflow and travel with me. They have worked reliably with the abuse of air travel and through the mail. I take them with me abroad and in the field. I use them to hold backups of my photography work and to share work with clients. In my use and experience with these hard drives, they have proved to be very reliable. I like the ease and speed of using the thunderbolt connection, but like having the USB 3.0 as another option when needed. I have not experienced any of the issues that other people are having. I highly recommend this product.

    Really bad external hard drive

    • Written by Jean Luc A from Genève

I bought this hard drive several months ago to get something reliable and solid as I already have a couple of external hard drive.
The first one I bought had a problem, it was awfully slow and bugged most of the time. I sent it back.
The second one is ok. Just ok. Seriously it's slower than my older hard drive, it disconnects as soon as I move an inch and it's doing these really weird sounds.

It's ok. But I am not so happy about it.

Built like a tank, but lacks performance

    • Written by Paul S from North Sydney

Summary: Built very rugged, but Thunderbolt was slower than USB3 in both on my iMac 27" i7 and my MacBook 11" i7. Tried with both the fitted 1TB Samsung HDD and two different SSDs. My inexpensive USB3 encloser costing 10% outperformed this unit.

If you really, really want the rugged packaging and don't care about the price then I recommend the USB3 without Thunderbolt, version.

In addition this doesn't have a 2nd TB connector, so you cannot daisy chain an external monitor.

I would not recommend this unit.
