    Do not purchase if you live in anything larger than a shoebox

    I forked out $85 for one of these to put in my kids room so I could turn off her sidelight at night after she fell asleep. Lying in bed last night I went to turn it off and it's out of range. You cannot operate these unless you are standing outside the door of the room. This plug works on bluetooth to the extent of about 6m.

    I had read someone else's review about getting a shock after taking them out and thought it was some kind of fault. I was wrong. Putting it back in the box to return and touched on of the metal plugs and got a shock, not massive, but enough to put a small dog to sleep.

    Do not buy these they are not safe and have limited range. I expected more for the $$ I paid. This is my first ever review on an item as I don't want someone else making the same mistake.

    The app that Eve use is actually really good, almost on par with HomeKit in IOS 13 but just such a disappointing product to use. Am on my way to return them now!

    Occasionally this works

    When it turns on and off this product is ok. Sadly it just doesn’t repeat this.

    User interface isn’t smart.

    It’s in the bin after 6 weeks.

    Dangerous garbage, should be recalled.

    After a few months it started failing intermittently. For a plug timer, this is a bad thing.
    I set it up on an electric blanket. Some nights it would fail to turn on. Then worse it would fail to turn off, so we would wake up sweltering.
    When I tried to connect to see what was going on, it would report “No Response” but then randomly start responding again.
    I decided to remove it and happened to touch the pins AFTER it was fully unplugged.
    I received a painful electric shock. I see that this has been reported by other users as well.
    Mine is now in the e-waste. This product is dangerous and should be removed from sale.

    Died after 3 months

    looks good but failed un under 3 months

    Purchased on the 23/11/18 to replace Wemo plug to try and bring everything under HomeKit, set up great size perfect and integration to apple just what I was after....however after less than three months the unit responds to HomeKit commands e.g. appears to switch on and off but the internal relay that controls the power has failed meaning the power stays on all the time. Eve support refers you to the source of purchase (apple store) and the apple store refers you to Eve....both reluctant to take ownership despite the product being under 3 months old. finally received new unit from apple after reference to consumer goods act and after 1 week same problem!!!! WEMO working perfectly 2 years in!!!

    Seriously not impressed!

    Straight out of the box this unit was as dead as a dodo. Would not even power up something plugged into it, let alone be set up for homekit use. Instructions were equally as useless. Tells you to plug into a powered socket but shows a picture with the socket turned off. Again shows you how to reset the unit with it held in both hands away from the power socket (which I doubt would work even if the unit wasn’t dead anyway). No troubleshooting information. All in all, a costly peice of junk. Now need a 60 mile round trip to return the thing to the Apple store.

    Design Failure

    The Australian version of this device blocks the other socket in the standard Australian twin socket power outlet, so you cannot plug anything else into the second socket. This is about as stupid a design decision as it is possible to make. I have other wifi sockets (Efergy) that are designed so that you can fit two side by side in the standard twin socket. Obvious really. Same for standard Australian power boards. The spacing of the sockets means that the Eve energy blocks adjacent sockets on the power board. Many manufacturers STILL make plug-in power transformers for electrical devices that also block adjacent sockets in Oz plugs and power boards. It took quite a few years before power board manufacturers came up with widely spaced sockets on power boards, at a premium price of course. So if you want to use both wall sockets at the same tme this not the device for you.

    After iOS 12 this device is useless. Scheduling doesn't work so there is basically no point in having it. Avoid home automation devices until Apple gets their s*** together on this area.

    useless because it keeps disconnecting

    I have three of these in my home, connected to an Apple TV as home hub and controlled via the Apple home app. They work intermittently, sometimes they stay connected for days, sometimes they lose the connection for no apparent reason and refuse to be controlled. Even when they work, there is a noticeable lag between the touch of the button in the app and the light actually switching, which is also very annoying.

    This is a useless, unreliable product that does not work as advertised or expected. I recommend staying away from it.

    Great Product when it works

    I have purchased 6 of these so far and they work great... when they actually turn on. Out of the 6 I have bough so far 2 have been DOA. This is poor quality control on Elgato's behalf. This is the only reason I'm giving them 4/5 stars.

    I will continue to expand my EVE system with 2 more EVE Energy and I just hope that they work out of the box.

    The product is fantastic when its working though.

    Elgato Nr. 1

    I am using elgato smart plugs nearly a year along with many other Apple HomeKit devices and I must say that there is not a single negative finding so far. I knew from the seller and documentation it is limited to kw, whis is obvious. However it does what was promised. When I leave home it shuts down the TV, fan, stand lights. When I or my wife comes back (under certain conditions) and when its over 25C - switches fan on. Computer on when I come to “working corner” (based on motion). When not in room for some time switch of stand lamp, etc. I have around 40 automatizations set up and every single one works like a charm. Good job Apple and Elgato, keep up the great job. This was a reason why I switched to Apple, so easy to configure and go with reliable devices which never let you down. ;)

    Absolutely useless with anything drawing a larger current.

    I bought one of these to automatically switch on a heater, because ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE does ANY of the documentation list that there is a limit to how much current the product will (or, in this case, will NOT) handle. It would switch itself off after just a few seconds of being activated.

    At first I thought it was the power board I was using, so I plugged it directly into an extension cord, then plugged it into the wall directly and used an extension cord off it. Then I removed the extension cord from the equation and tried plugging the heater directly into the wall through the device.

    Zero. Zip. Nada. Nothing.

    Either Elgato needs to upgrade the product for use in similar situations, or they should CLEARLY mark on ALL documentation (including websites) that it has a limitation.

    If I could give a zero star review, I would.

    Big problem! - not worth the money

    Great app! great devices!

    BUT - this only works on appliances with power requirements of under 1800W. That means: No kettle, no iron, no dishwasher.
    That means - you can't really use this device to monitor your energy usage (as you can't use it on the most power hungry appliances in your home.
    This is buried in the fine print on this site but it should be made more explicit to users (not the app itself even has icons for kettles and dishwashers!)
    So you can't for example -use it to check whether you left your iron on.

    I think this is a great technology and great app - but for energy monitory it is not fit for purpose.

    Poor design

    These work fine for me but have to put them on a pawer board and loose 2 outlets.

    Double wall outlet looses other plug.

    Did they even try these in a real home before making them, I thought aApple of all people would require good design in products they are promoting.

    Dead on arrival and dangerous!

    I am hugely disappointed in this product. It arrived today and does not work. I plug it in, follow the instructions and neither the EVE app or home kit can find the device. The manual button on the front also does not work to turn on a lamp.
    Worse than not working, I pulled the unit out of a power socket, and happened to touch the pins, and got a SIGNIFICANT electric shock!
    Remember, it was completely unplugged. Nothing was plugged into this device, and it was not in to the wall.
    It obviously has a fault and held residual current. Extremely dangerous and hurt a little bit.
    If I could rate this a zero I would!

    Test in the store first..

    As per title, returned one after it blew/shorted. So got a replacement and that was dead on arrival... back to the Apple store again. The staff we're awesome and suggested we test the 2nd replacement out in store, turns out that new one out of the box was dead as well, so we tried yet another and it was fine (and still works a few months later now.)

    Also, put them behind a surge protector, as they seem to be stupidly fragile.

    Aside that, seems to work as expected (When it works).

    Easy and reasonably priced

    Good piece if kit. One controls my TV and other a lamp. Get the occasional "not responding". always works when i go into the app though or when i ask Siri again

    Points it misses 5 stars - Still a little chunky for my personal liking, occasional bugs.

    Good but unreliable

    I have bought two of these and they are great, work very well with HomeKit. The other good thing about these is that they don’t require a hub like so many other HomeKit compatible devices.

    However both have failed within a year of purchase, they both started by failing to respond to commands to switch on and off. Due to Apple not apply any warranty to this you will need to contact Elgato directly. I can say that Elgato were very helpful.

    Excellent HomeKit Home Automation Product

    This compact and quality device arrived quickly from Apple / Elgato. I set it up on the Elgato Eve App and the HomeKit App easily. It has no requirement for a separate hub, relying only on the Apple TV hub for remote operation outside the range of the low energy Bluetooth signal. I set up timers for automatic on and off. (It takes 4 timers to be set up for two on and two off events each day.) You can adjust which devices show up on your Eve at-a-glance page and your HomeKit favourites. There is a slight delay when selecting or asking Siri to turn on/off, but not problematic. A manual on/off switch is on the unit itself. Helpful website and people at Elgato to help with any questions you may have.

    Compatibility issues with other HomeKit products

    Well designed with clear instructions, this is an easy device to install and configure. Once firmware / software issues are resolved it will be very useful.

    Currently there are compatibility issues with other HomeKit products (Dec 2017): immediately following install, other products stopped working, and application software would not load. Firmware updates did not help. Removing the Eve from Apple Home immediately resolved these issues.

    Everything has been reported to Apple and other vendors, so hopefully a fix will be forthcoming.
