There may have been a manufacturing issue.

Very puzzling that the reviews are so split between lovers and haters of this adapter. I looked this up on Amazon and found many very recent reviews overwhelmingly quite positive. So I will get one to avoid having to fork over the cash for a spare MagSafe power supply just to have the right connector. I have an 85W spare for the old 2011 MacBook I am leaving behind and it will be the one reminder of the old computer that I simply wore out. I gave it 5 stars because I expect it to work fine as the recent reviews indicate.

    Worked flawlessly for years

I've been really pleased with this - on my old Cinema display at work - that is 8 years old, the magsafe adapter is now 4 1/2 years old and is still going strong.

Stops working after a couple months, i think i know why

This does exactly what you would expect but it stopped working after maybe 4-5 months. I think it stopped working because it got too hot using it with the metal magsafe charger, so now i am using it with my plastic magsafe charger and it no longer gets hot.

Works flawlessly for over 4 years now

Never had a single problem with it, 4+ years in the service under daily use with my MacBook Pro and Apple Thunderbolt Display.

    Three months on, still working

I have seen the reviews for this adaptor, just have to say that mine has been working fine for over three months now. I unplug it and plug it back in daily, put the charger in by backpack and otherwise treat it like a regular charger.

I've owned one for over a year with no problems so far

I have to admit that I was worried when I bought this due to the horrible reviews. I bought a MacBook Pro 15" mid 2015 and I have 2 older magsafe chargers from my previous MacBook Pro mid 2009.

I have now owned one single adapter for over a year now without any issues. I actually switch it between two older chargers on a regular basis. It has worked without any problems whatsoever. You learn to simply bend it along the longest edge to disconnect it easily.

Hopefully this review will keep someone else from worrying like I did, otherwise I wouldn't have waited a year to buy another one with confidence.

Converter did not work with 15" Macbook Pro 2015

This converter did not work at all for me. Very disappointed. While in town with an Apple store went and bought a second 85W Magsafe2 power cord. Would have preferred not to have to spend that money. I always keep one power cord in office and another in my mobile bag.

This might work with smaller screen size laptops. Wish Apple would have made this work for me.

Saved the day and allowed reuse of MagSafe form old MBP.

I was in the middle of a meeting one morning and it went long and my battery was dying. I only had my old MBP supply at the office, but had just purchased a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter the night before. I paused the meeting for 2 minutes grabbed the converter and my old power supply and was back in business instantly!

I'm still a bit puzzled/aggravated as to why Apple had to change MagSafe to MagSafe 2. It seems like a bit of unnecessary obsolescence.

    just as everybody says

Few products wear out faster. Donuts and corsages rival it in durability. Will work for several days though.

Not as bad as everyone says

Our office uses the converter daily, and has been doing so well over 2 years. We have yet to see one fail. I'm not saying they're not finicky at times, but I've never been unable to charge my computer.

I'd prefer not to have to use one, but it's not a deterrent at all.

    Failed

After about a year the connection end looks corroded and it only works intermittently. You have to hold your breath every time the machine moves. Not a very robust design for a laptop.

    Been working great for months

I've been using one of these for a few months and it's been working perfectly. It stays reliably attached to the charging cable. Buying a second now to resurrect a second older charger.

    Worked for awhile....

Had a brand new spare MagSafe charger for my previous MacBook Pro so I bought a converter to have a second charger for my current MBP. I've used it with no problems for the past 3 plus years until recently. Only used it periodically over most of that time, but have used it a lot in the past 8 - 9 months, leaving one charger at work and one at home so I don't have to constantly unplug and wrap it up. The small cord frayed badly at the block on my MagSafe 2, so have been relying on the old one with the converter totally for the past 3-4 months. That is when problems started with the converter.
Have cleaned it more than once and have been at the point where I spend 5 plus minutes making sure it is charging. Nothing worse than opening up my MacBook to see less than 10% charge after "charging" all night. Last night could not get it to work and when disconnecting it, the magnetic piece stayed in the charging slot separating from the converter!!! Was able to put it back and realized that when pushed in slightly it charges... for now.
Was going to buy another converter, but after all the bad reviews not sure if spending $10 now and eventually spending $80 for a new complete MagSafe 2 is the way to go. Really don't want to lay out $80 right now!
Gave it 3 stars because of how long I've used it.

Please Don't Assume The Reviewers Are Wrong - This Is A Piece Of Junk.

It's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN this will fail. This is the worst piece of hardware to ever come out of Apple. I'm a die-hard fan and this is ridiculous - these always fail after a few months of use. It's sad, but you're just going to have to shell out the cash for a Magsafe 2 power supply and junk your old Magsafe. This converter is a short term fix only. You've been warned.

    AVOID THIS JUNK, really disappointed.

I can not believe this, I used this with my TB Display 27 to power my Macbook pro Retina 15, it worked for a year, not moved from the desk top, now suddenly the light is off and its not charging, if I wiggle it the battery icon changes to power icon, but the battery percentage doesn't change, the light is off completely.
Now I am recharging with original cable.

    very poor quality.

    Unreliable

This adapter worked fine for the first few months I had it, but then it would just stop working after being plugged in for a while and the amber/green light on the charger would not be illuminated. Now it is very difficult to get it to connect properly when first connecting it, I have to jiggle it every which way to get it to finally connect. I'm also regularly using a compressed air cleaner to clean it and the other connections to get it to properly work. I use my Macbook on a desk so it's not like it's moving around a lot or at all where it might disconnect, I'd hate to see how this works when using it on your lap. I'd prefer not to have to purchase an $80 MagSafe 2 charger when this should do the job and work with my several MagSafe 1 chargers.

    Never got it to work.

I would give it zero stars if I could. I'm using an 85w magsafe purchased less than a year ago, with the adapter that I purchased about 3 weeks ago. I got a new 15" macbook pro and didn't want to lug my charger from home to work and back every day.

Found this, which looked like a perfect solution. Except it's never worked. Not even once. I've spent over an hour trying different things to get it to work, based on advice from message boards and from apple.

The real pain is that it was like 10 bucks, and I threw the packaging away when I opened it. It's not worth my time to drive back to the store and spend 30 min-1 hour of my life getting that $10 back.

I'm very irritated by this product, and by apple's shameless money-grab antics with new chargers for their laptops and phones.

    Very disappointing accessory

I purchased a MacBook Pro 13" and a Thunderbolt display in November 2014. There was no option but to use the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter (which was included in the package). While I am very pleased with the performance of the computer an the display, the connector is a thoroughly unsatisfactory and not worthy of Apple, especially because it is the only means of connecting two pieces of equipment costing more that £2000. It rarely connects immediately and more often than not I have to spend time making adjustments to the connector before the light comes on. Even then, I cannot rely on the connection being sustained; many a time, I've left my MacBook Pro on charge, only to discover several hours later that it hasn't charged. I purchased a second adaptor, but it is no better. The assistants at the Apple Store are unable to help and simply tell me that I am not the only one who has the difficulty.
