about to order my fourth due to failures

    • Written by Jonathan C from Ottawa

Just like so many other people here, I'm having to get YET ANOTHER ONE OF THESE THINGS.

I'm having to get my fourth, simply because I have FIVE "regular" magsafe power bricks around the house
(don't ask how many Macbooks... sigh) and I have *one* macbook that I have to put up with the stupid magsafe2.

And because these things are so small... and easy to lose... and die on a regular basis... I'm now ordering my fourth.

For all I know at least one of them is sitting at the bottom of my son's drawer of LEGO... Sigh...

Converter did not work with 15" Macbook Pro 2015

    • Written by judith B from Tallahassee

This converter did not work at all for me. Very disappointed. While in town with an Apple store went and bought a second 85W Magsafe2 power cord. Would have preferred not to have to spend that money. I always keep one power cord in office and another in my mobile bag.

This might work with smaller screen size laptops. Wish Apple would have made this work for me.

Few products wear out faster. Donuts and corsages rival it in durability. Will work for several days though.

After about a year the connection end looks corroded and it only works intermittently. You have to hold your breath every time the machine moves. Not a very robust design for a laptop.

Please Don't Assume The Reviewers Are Wrong - This Is A Piece Of Junk.

    • Written by RICHARD T from Great Falls

It's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN this will fail. This is the worst piece of hardware to ever come out of Apple. I'm a die-hard fan and this is ridiculous - these always fail after a few months of use. It's sad, but you're just going to have to shell out the cash for a Magsafe 2 power supply and junk your old Magsafe. This converter is a short term fix only. You've been warned.

    AVOID THIS JUNK, really disappointed.

    • Written by michael A from london

I can not believe this, I used this with my TB Display 27 to power my Macbook pro Retina 15, it worked for a year, not moved from the desk top, now suddenly the light is off and its not charging, if I wiggle it the battery icon changes to power icon, but the battery percentage doesn't change, the light is off completely.
Now I am recharging with original cable.

    very poor quality.

    Never got it to work.

    • Written by Gregory T from Los Angeles

I would give it zero stars if I could. I'm using an 85w magsafe purchased less than a year ago, with the adapter that I purchased about 3 weeks ago. I got a new 15" macbook pro and didn't want to lug my charger from home to work and back every day.

Found this, which looked like a perfect solution. Except it's never worked. Not even once. I've spent over an hour trying different things to get it to work, based on advice from message boards and from apple.

The real pain is that it was like 10 bucks, and I threw the packaging away when I opened it. It's not worth my time to drive back to the store and spend 30 min-1 hour of my life getting that $10 back.

I'm very irritated by this product, and by apple's shameless money-grab antics with new chargers for their laptops and phones.

    Very disappointing accessory

    • Written by JOHN M from LONDON

I purchased a MacBook Pro 13" and a Thunderbolt display in November 2014. There was no option but to use the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter (which was included in the package). While I am very pleased with the performance of the computer an the display, the connector is a thoroughly unsatisfactory and not worthy of Apple, especially because it is the only means of connecting two pieces of equipment costing more that £2000. It rarely connects immediately and more often than not I have to spend time making adjustments to the connector before the light comes on. Even then, I cannot rely on the connection being sustained; many a time, I've left my MacBook Pro on charge, only to discover several hours later that it hasn't charged. I purchased a second adaptor, but it is no better. The assistants at the Apple Store are unable to help and simply tell me that I am not the only one who has the difficulty.

The best reason for wanting to adapt your MagSafe 1 adapter to work with a MagSafe 2 machine would be to alleviate the incessant disconnecting that occurs when your LAPTOP is on, well, your LAP! This "adapter" succeeds in rendering the right-angle MagSafe 1 adapter's right-angle design (which prevents disconnection every time one moves) thoroughly USELESS!

Apple just make the MagSafe 2 adapter with the right-angle connector! I mean seriously, you obviously KNEW the original MagSafe design was flawed in this way so you made the right-angle version. What on earth made anyone believe that going BACK to the first generation MagSafe connector design was going to work. Oh yeah, I get it... we will introduce the "solution to the problem" for ANOTHER $80.00 after a year or so of complaints just like last time. How very "Microsoft" of you!

Terrible product that usually fails to work within 12 months of use.

    • Written by Pete C from Moorooka

I've purchased over 60 Apple Thunderbolt Displays in the last 12 months through the organisation I work with and greater than 80% of the included MagSafe2 Converters have failed to work within a 12 month period. Sometimes the failure is intermittent and can be resolved by methods mentioned in other reviews (jiggling the adapter, cleaning with an alcohol solution).

I can't believe Apple would continue to sell such a terrible product especially when there is no option to have a MagSafe2 cord with the Thunderbolt Display (at least there wasn't at time of purchase). If you're using this with a regular power charger (not Thunderbolt Display) then you're more than likely going to be better off to just pay for the new charger that doesn't require the adapter.

The sooner Apple updates the Thunderbolt Display to have a MagSafe2 cord by default, the better.

The problem I have experienced since about a year after purchasing the Thunderbolt display to run with my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, is that getting the charging light to come on is a matter of wiggling the adapter about for an indeterminate length of time. Sometimes it works straightaway and other times my coffee has gone cold by the time I get it to connect. No charging light = no charging (although I think the display works ... I am not prepared to try this out again right now). However, I see no other solution to using the display with a newer MacBook Pro. Hence one star for a dodgy piece of equipment to allow two expensive other pieces of equipment to work together.

Cons: stop working after a short while.
    Pros: NONE!!!

They don't last UNLESS you clean them thoroughly

    • Written by Greg L from Cripple Creek

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has failing adapters. Yes, I did get mine to work again, but only after brushing it with stiff brush AND cleaning it with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol on both sides of the adapter. NOT something that should have to be done on a regular basis. Design FAIL.

I bought 2 adapters. Right out of the box one worked and the other didn't. I'd be willing to believe that I just got a lemon but considering the number of poor reviews, I don't think that's the case.

Works Off and On, Shouldn't Even be Necessary

    • Written by Andrew O from Syracuse

I purchased at 2015 MacBook Pro, alongside a brand new Apple Cinema Display. First off, I was disappointed to find that Apple hasn't even updated their Cinema Display to work natively with the new MacBook Pro MagSafe port. You'd think after spending over $1,000 on a display, and then $2,000+ on a laptop, that Apple would've had the foresight to update the adapter on the Cinema Display. As a business that prides itself on design and ease-of-use, this is just ridiculous.

Secondly, the converter doesn't work reliably. I've purchased two in the last three months. There are no moving parts, so I don't understand the converters lose contact and refuse to charge the laptop after about 30-40 days. My second one is now acting up.

The MagSafe converter is the only option to get these two devices to work properly with each other, and with that, you'd think Apple would make something that would work reliably.

I thought I just had a duff one, but it looks like I am not alone

    • Written by R E C from Wallasey

I've been using one of these adapters for a couple of months on my macbook pro with a suitable wattage power supply, but now find that it has become unreliable. If I borrow a colleagues then it works fine, but switching back to mine results in pot luck as to whether it will decide to charge. The laptop detects it and switches to 'Power Adapter' mode, but doesn't actually charge up. I came to purchase a replacement, but having read the other reviews I will be investing in a new power supply instead.
