    External Drive

Not good. It eats your discs. Not sure what you should buy to replace, but don't buy this.

    USB Superdrive

I bought this 18 months ago with my MacBook Pro Retina and used it to make several DVD's of a family wedding. Come to use it again last week and there was nothing. No recognition on the desktop but it was powered up as you could hear the drive start and see a red light inside the slot. Time to call an Apple expert on the timed phone call service. Bottom line was the hard drive had gone...Superdrive has only done 5 DVD's. What really made me annoyed was the technician told me the drive has broken because it's not been powered up on a regular basis. So Apple have made a product to self destruct if you do not power it up every couple of weeks......I am totally stunned and disgusted.

Sure wish I'd read the reviews

What a stupidly designed piece of technology. No mechanical way to eject the disk, so if it gets stuck in a loop, which happens often, I can't eject from the laptop and can't eject mechanically. I have spent a LOT of time dinking around with this thing. I hate that I'm stuck with this because my Apple laptop doesn't have a DVD drive. NOT customer friendly.

Outdated.... only has old USB connector

Bought this to use with my new Mac - which only has USB-c ports. the 'Super'Drive is not 'super' - it has an old style USB connector and needs an adapter to use it with the new Mac. If you try to use it with a hub it doesn't power through it and won't work, so I now need another, USB-c to USB adaptor. Come on Apple - surely if you think USB-c is the future, shouldn't your accessories have the same connector? Waste of money.

    NOPE

I bought two of these... they both ate two different dvd's and broke on me.... Can we see an unvailing of a new and better design of this at the keynote??? Because these are the worst...

    Awful!

Would skip when copying sound cd's to my imac, missing many songs. Wouldn't copy or even recognize photo back up cd's, home-made and kodak from pro shop. Difficulty in ejecting some cd's. little help on-line.

    Shame on you

I have had enough with this piece of garbage. Honestly it has been a pain in the @ss trying to make the superdrive work with my macbook pro (late 2011). Its unbelievable the fact that Apple sells something that is not fully compatible with its own products.
I have lost so much time trying to make it work, using advice from google, using terminal etc and stupid commands like sudo plist and sudo nvram boot-args="mbasd=1" . This should not be so complicated. Shame on you

    Dog Carp

It worked a few times, then it started to need four or five disks to get one to work. Then it failed completely - it will fail to verify all disks. Don't buy it.

    Awful. Awful. AWFUL!

I bought the Super Drive for use with my MacBook Pro, and it hasn't worked since the day I bought it. Without rehashing what so many other disappointed users have said already, I will say this: DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS DRIVE!!!!!!! If I could give it 0 stars, I would......

Awful product - do not buy - it broke

This completely stopped working after about 10 uses. Wow, You pay $75 for an Apple external drive and I now was going to buy a replacement, but see the MASSIVE number of 1 star reviews. Big disappointment by Apple. DO NOT PURCHASE. I am going to try Samsung.

    Not reliable!!

I received this new as a gift to work with my new blazing fast iMac, and I couldn't be more disappointed. I burn CD's so I can play a cappella learning tracks in the car (old car) and every time I try to burn my playlist, it will not read the first track. I tried slowing down the burn speed, etc. no avail. Will look for another product.

    what a hunka junk!

Second time I tried to use it - my computer (iMac 27" Retina display) won't even read the device! Now I have a software DVD stuck in the thing so heading to the local Apple store to see if they can remove it. VERY disappointing! I gave it a 1 star only because negative starts are not an option.

    Epileptic drive

works great for about 50 reads then vibrates like mad every time you try to insert a disk. Then it spits the disk out. Gave it a single "star" rating because I got the disk back. ;). Do not buy this product. Weird drop in quality for this company.

Frustrating using the Apple USB SuperDrive

Very disappointed with this product. Copying my CDs to iTunes is now a hit or miss affair. It starts copying then stops saying cannot find a track then ejects the disc ! I have no problems copying the same CDs to iTunes on my MacBook. So most of the times I copy my CDs to iTunes on my MacBook then transfer then songs to my iMac. Very very slow process. There is definitely something wrong with these USB Superdrives

    Do not buy this product

This product does not work on the Mac OS even though the apple technician and box will tell you it does. The first one I bought was replaced when it didn't work. 'The second one stopped working after 1 month. I spent 2 hours in the Apple Store trying to have them figure out why and really they have no idea why. All they could tell me was that maybe it was a problem with the USB adapter, that you have to buy to connect the superdrive, which does not recognize the superdrive to the computer. The superdrive does not show on on the desktop and if you put a disc in, you have no way to get it out. They could not explain why it worked initially then. And beware they would not refund my money because they said it wouldn't count under the warranty because the superdrive actually works, it's a computer firmware problem that needs to be fixed, but there is no fix for it!!!So it won't work on my computer. It was like talking in circles. Save your receipt. I do wish I had listened to those other reviews. What is happening with apple products, they are junk now and the customer service is terrible

    Rubbish. Again.

I've owned 3 Apple CD/DVD-R drives; in a 2006 MacBook Pro, a 2009 MacBook and a 2012 USB Superdrive. They all failed early in their lives. Apple have the brass neck to charge £79 for this now. The exact same drive was £65 when I bought it in Jan 2013. If you want to know, while trying to burn a DVD using Toast Titanium 10 I got an error message basically saying the drive didn't like the media. Not the first time that has happened but the experience melted my unSuperdrive. It will read CDs but not DVDs and none of the fixes out there (and I've searched) make any difference. The hardware is broken. From doing something it's supposed to do. Apple, why don't you put this rubbish out of its misery like you did with the optical drive in the laptop range? Sometimes no solution is better than a lousy one.

    Very Temperamental, not super!

I purchased one to be used with my iMac, primarily to rip & burn cd's. It has proven to be very temperamental in use - sometimes will begin to rip tracks ok then suddenly decides to stop/freeze or whatever, just keeps humming away with no progress being made. Also becomes very difficult to eject the disc from iTunes and end up having to force quit iTunes before ejecting the disc with the keyboard key. Very frustrating piece of kit, although on the odd occasion it does work perfectly! Wouldn't recommend for the price!

My only disappointment with an Apple product. Ever.

I read the reviews and purchased the product anyway as my faith in Apple products is strong. It did not work at all with the disc I needed to use or any other disc I had. I then had to go out to purchase a Verbatim CD/DVD Writer to get my work done. I popped in the same disc. It worked immediately with no issues. This is the first time that I can say I am disappointed in Apple. I have an iPad Pro, iPhone, MacBook, and iMac and they are all five stars and more. I only bothered to write this in the hopes that Apple addresses the issues with this product at some point.

Used it once, now doesn't wotk

Bought the 'superdrive' with my iMac a couple of years back, no longer works. Connect it to my iMac via a working USB, nothing. Doesn't show up as a drive, won't accept discs, totally useless. Looking online it seems the only advice is 'Buy another one. Super it isn't.

Awful - I wish I had listening to these reviews before purchasing.

I would give this no stars if it would let me. Expensive and does not work. I would like to rip my CD collection to my iTunes library (don't get me started on that one either) if it's alright with you, apple. This CD player will not rip or even play CDs without spitting them out half way through, ripping half a track and moving on, audio glitches - do I need to go on? There's plenty of other CD / DVD drives out there for half the price that do the job.
