Used to work with MIDI keys and mixer until iOS12

    • Written by Gusztav S from Budapest

My use case is connecting Garageband on iPad to Yamaha MG12XU mixer to record/playback keyboard performance.
Another use case is - when travelling - to connect a Swissonic Easykey 49 MIDI keyboard and play piano sounds I bought in Apple store.
I used the Lightning to USB camera adapter in both use cases and it worked fine until I updated both my iPad Pro and my iPhone 7 to iOS12 (or 12.1 - I don’t know exactly because I didn’t try using it between the two updates).
Unfortunately now none of them works with none of my adapters (I’ve got 2, both originals from Apple).

It’s not just annoying that I cannot use my music setup since weeks, but I was searching for the root of the problem for days.
If you don’t have multiple apple devices, multiple adapters and multiple connected devices that used to work, you cannot test out and therefore cannot be sure that the problem is with iOS12, and you can keep searching for the cause till the end of time.

Even more annoying is that the adapter actually works fine for about 1.5 minutes before it stops working and sends the error message “this accessory is not supported by this iPad” - how come, that it is supported for 90 seconds, then it becomes not supported any more?

While I am eagerly waiting for an iOS update that solves this problem, I would like to be notified by Apple in similar cases so that I don’t waste my time trying to identify the cause of the problem in my other gear (USB cable, Mixer, keyboard). I have seen that hundreds of users keep complaining about the AV adapter not working since iOS12 upgrade, but I haven’t seen a word from Apple on these topics.

I think it is lame customer experience and should be fixed asap.

    Apple, you are insulting me!

    • Written by Daniel D from Pau

I have purchased this item naive enough to think that it may allow me to transfer high-resolution photos from my DSLR into my iPad mini 4.. ..a very understandable mistake since it is presented this way.. HOWEVER, when I import TIFF photographs into my iPad the primitive "Photos" app automatically reduces the quality and compresses the TIFF format to a 3,5 Mpx photo. Apple, I love your products, but this is a major fail and I feel insulted. Stop trying to appeal to professionals when you are not able to keep up with their needs.

No longer works with iOS 12

    • Written by Valerie P from Chula Vista

Can't believe it, but they have an adapter that doesn't work with the latest OS. Now have no way to transfer photos from ANY camera to my iPad or iPhone. Thanks Apple! So glad I spent $30 on this.

    What a joke, unbelievable!!!

    • Written by Cedric J from Atlanta

This is unbelievable, all of a sudden, when connecting to my ipad I get this message saying: accessory unavailable and that's crazy considering the fact that it was working for at least three weeks since I purchased it and I haven't had any problems until now. I use it as a midi connector for my korg microkey-air keyboard so it's not the keyboard it's this useless piece of junk of a product. I've tried an usb hub, still no solution. Thirty-dollar's down the drain. They are going to keep making billions of dollars, I don't care; I am done with rotten apple and they're mediocre overrated products. They seriously need to get it together, I am so tired of the frustration. Stupid me, I also spent over a hundred dollars in music apps because of my use of the camera connection kit for my production. Thank you so much Apple, for ruining my workflow and taking my hard-earned money. Pathetic!!!

    iOS update broke this

    • Written by Matthew K from Cumming

The original Lightning to USB Camera Adapter worked fine with my camera for years until the iOS12 update. In fact, I bought the new Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter with the power plug and that doesn't work either so it isn't a power issue. Do not waste your $30 - $40 on either of these until Apple fixes the issue.

iOS 11.2 has ruin my life.

    • Written by Gabriel F from Blackwell

Since the iOS 11.2 got available as update to the iPhone 6+, my Lightning to USB Camera Adapter DOES NOT WORK!!
It keeps saying that is not compatible, EVEN when it has nothing else plugged.

I've try to plug another device to it (No positive results)
I've try to restart the phone, and plug it back in. and IT DIDN'T WORK.
After that day I tried again, and it magically detected the device I plugged. But I tried again, and it didn't work.

    WHAT'S WRONG?
HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS? I WORK WITH THIS, and this problem it's making my work harder.

    iOS 7.1 killed this connector

    • Written by Harold M from Cambridge

Since updating my iPad air to iOS 7.1 , this no longer works, I get a message that reads "This accessory requires to much power" when I plug just the adaptor in and nothing else, I also tried it with my wifes iPad 4th Gen and I get the same message. Both running iOS 7.1 was not a problem with iOS 7.0. Very frustrating! This worked great before and if it still worked after updating I would give this a 4 or 5 rating as it is was a great product, but now it is dead!

No longer works - DO NOT BUY!

    • Written by Jonathan A from North Shields

This used to be a great product but no longer works since iOS 11.2. I'm now using iOS 11.3 and still all i get is the message: 'this accessory is not supported by this iPhone' - the iPhone in question is an iPhone 8 but it also stopped working on iPad and iPhone SE, all since iOS 11.2.

Shame on Apple for still selling this!

    Not working...

    • Written by MIKE S from STAFFORD

I bought adapter to ease downloading of photos to iPad Air from Sony DSC-HX300 Bridge camera. All working fine. Haven't downloaded photos for a while, maybe since last update to iOS 9.3.1? I now get "Connected device requires too much power" message & can't download - do I need to spend more money on USB powered / not powered adapter?

    Requires Too Much Energy

    • Written by Kelly W from MIDDLETON

This adapter will not allow me to plug in a simple SD card reader (with no card in it yet) without saying that it requires too much energy. Unfortunately, it is basically useless. I will have to buy the version that comes with the extra port to simultaneously charge; it really shouldn't be this difficult.

No stars--even though apple forced me to give it a star to write the review

    • Written by B. M from Apex

Absolutely does not work. I have a Nikon Coolpix L840 and an ipad air running 9.3.1. I continually get the message that the device requires too much power. Searched on-line and was told to check that the "USB power supply" was off on ipad...can't find that anywhere in settings. Also been told to buy an external hub, yet I've read that people who've done that were unsuccessful. What's the deal apple? Now I have to drive 40 miles to the nearest apple store to return this useless cable.

    Zero stars

    • Written by Yogen K from Sunnyvale

I should have read the reviews before buying. Tried with canon, Sony and Panasonic cameras and camcorders. It imported only pictures but not videos. Import functionality also has the worst user interface. You can only see thumb nails and there’s is no bulk import option - so it’s useless unless you are importing only a handful pics. Connecting to my latest Casio keyboard through midi also did not work. Time to dump not just this adapter but also the iPad and stick to the PC. iPad Pro is not really for any pro work.

Simply awful connector as I've only made it work with one Canon camera (and a simple MIDI pad). Doesn't work with my Sony video cam, Nikon, GoPro, or any of my USB drives as they all "require too much power". Useless and if I could, I would get my money back.

come on Apple, why waste my time.

    • Written by John M from Austin

I buy this to plug an 8Gb USB drive in to get some vacation photos out onto my iPad where I love using iPhoto to organize things. And I get an error message telling me the device requires too much power and cannot be used. hrm? Too much power? An 8gb thumb drive? What's really going on here? Can an Apple hardware and or software engineer shed light on why a $30.00 external port that should be built in cannot power an 8gb usb thumb drive? Im abviously returning it. but still logically. And even from a business stand point(profit) wouldn't you want some thing to actually work in the most basic ways? I mean aren't most people buying these and plugging usb drives into them? what do I know right Apple? Well I do know this. An 8gb usb thumb drive should be able to be power by my iPad . And nobody needs to be an engineer to figure that out.

    • Written by James S from Sammamish

Have you ever heard of a USB adapter that won't read a thumb drive? Really - a thumb drive - extra memory, no moving parts...but the ipad pro says it uses too much power. So what exactly is it good for - don't waste your money - and time. Store employee should have been aware of this CRITICAL short coming and informed me that it was a useless piece of garbage....
