works perfectly once I changed camera communication setting

    • Written by Beth B from boone

A huge THANKS to the reviewer who suggested this - the adapter worked fine with my newish Powershot, but using my EOS 20D, which is pretty old, I got a message that the device was not supported. I was ready to send the adapter back, because I really need it for the EOS, my main camera- I am going to England this summer and am only taking my iPad Mini, not my laptop, so have to have some way to back up photos (losing photos due to a lost/damaged card, camera, etc would be beyond tragic)

Then I read the review that suggested going to the camera's menu and changing the Communication setting from Normal to PTP. Tada!! Success - the pictures loaded right up, I am very happy, and the adapter does not have to go back to Apple.

    works perfectly

    • Written by Louise K from Calverton

I was worried about the previous reviews, but I am totally satisfied with this product. it works with my Canon EOS DSLR and also with my old Olympus Camedia. I think people may be having problems with their camera's not being fully charged up when they try to transfer.

    Compatible with Canon 7D

    • Written by William W from carbondale

Works perfect with the Canon 7D. I just connect it to my iPad mini, turn on the camera, and it automatically uploads the files. I believe if you are shooting in RAW, it uses the jpeg generated by the camera. Fantastic!

Used to work with MIDI keys and mixer until iOS12

    • Written by Gusztav S from Budapest

My use case is connecting Garageband on iPad to Yamaha MG12XU mixer to record/playback keyboard performance.
Another use case is - when travelling - to connect a Swissonic Easykey 49 MIDI keyboard and play piano sounds I bought in Apple store.
I used the Lightning to USB camera adapter in both use cases and it worked fine until I updated both my iPad Pro and my iPhone 7 to iOS12 (or 12.1 - I don’t know exactly because I didn’t try using it between the two updates).
Unfortunately now none of them works with none of my adapters (I’ve got 2, both originals from Apple).

It’s not just annoying that I cannot use my music setup since weeks, but I was searching for the root of the problem for days.
If you don’t have multiple apple devices, multiple adapters and multiple connected devices that used to work, you cannot test out and therefore cannot be sure that the problem is with iOS12, and you can keep searching for the cause till the end of time.

Even more annoying is that the adapter actually works fine for about 1.5 minutes before it stops working and sends the error message “this accessory is not supported by this iPad” - how come, that it is supported for 90 seconds, then it becomes not supported any more?

While I am eagerly waiting for an iOS update that solves this problem, I would like to be notified by Apple in similar cases so that I don’t waste my time trying to identify the cause of the problem in my other gear (USB cable, Mixer, keyboard). I have seen that hundreds of users keep complaining about the AV adapter not working since iOS12 upgrade, but I haven’t seen a word from Apple on these topics.

I think it is lame customer experience and should be fixed asap.

No longer works with iOS 12

    • Written by Valerie P from Chula Vista

Can't believe it, but they have an adapter that doesn't work with the latest OS. Now have no way to transfer photos from ANY camera to my iPad or iPhone. Thanks Apple! So glad I spent $30 on this.

    iOS update broke this

    • Written by Matthew K from Cumming

The original Lightning to USB Camera Adapter worked fine with my camera for years until the iOS12 update. In fact, I bought the new Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter with the power plug and that doesn't work either so it isn't a power issue. Do not waste your $30 - $40 on either of these until Apple fixes the issue.

    Apple, you are insulting me!

    • Written by Daniel D from Pau

I have purchased this item naive enough to think that it may allow me to transfer high-resolution photos from my DSLR into my iPad mini 4.. ..a very understandable mistake since it is presented this way.. HOWEVER, when I import TIFF photographs into my iPad the primitive "Photos" app automatically reduces the quality and compresses the TIFF format to a 3,5 Mpx photo. Apple, I love your products, but this is a major fail and I feel insulted. Stop trying to appeal to professionals when you are not able to keep up with their needs.

    What a joke, unbelievable!!!

    • Written by Cedric J from Atlanta

This is unbelievable, all of a sudden, when connecting to my ipad I get this message saying: accessory unavailable and that's crazy considering the fact that it was working for at least three weeks since I purchased it and I haven't had any problems until now. I use it as a midi connector for my korg microkey-air keyboard so it's not the keyboard it's this useless piece of junk of a product. I've tried an usb hub, still no solution. Thirty-dollar's down the drain. They are going to keep making billions of dollars, I don't care; I am done with rotten apple and they're mediocre overrated products. They seriously need to get it together, I am so tired of the frustration. Stupid me, I also spent over a hundred dollars in music apps because of my use of the camera connection kit for my production. Thank you so much Apple, for ruining my workflow and taking my hard-earned money. Pathetic!!!

"Your experiences and opinions will help others make decisions ......"

    • Written by Don C from Englewood

This Lightning To USB Adapter works perfectly - IF YOU USE IT PROPERLY. As Apple clearly states at the top of this Review page .... "Your experiences and opinions will help others make decisions before they make important purchases."

Short & Sweet - and To The Point.

As far as I know - ALL Apple adapters REQUIRE a small amount of Plug In Power or Bias Power which is supplied by the adapted device, BUT unfortunately iPhones and iPads (Lightning) draw power instead of distribute power; Therefore - adapters and devices that require power, i.e. USB Flash Drives, USB Hubs or USB-powered SD Card Readers WILL NOT WORK with this particular cable (Lightning).

BUT if your intention is to download audio, video and image files from a POWERED device like a laptop, a desktop computer, a DSLR camera or an Audio Interface to your iPhone or iPad - "it's all good.

iOS 11.2 has ruin my life.

    • Written by Gabriel F from Blackwell

Since the iOS 11.2 got available as update to the iPhone 6+, my Lightning to USB Camera Adapter DOES NOT WORK!!
It keeps saying that is not compatible, EVEN when it has nothing else plugged.

I've try to plug another device to it (No positive results)
I've try to restart the phone, and plug it back in. and IT DIDN'T WORK.
After that day I tried again, and it magically detected the device I plugged. But I tried again, and it didn't work.

    WHAT'S WRONG?
HOW CAN I SOLVE THIS? I WORK WITH THIS, and this problem it's making my work harder.

    iOS 7.1 killed this connector

    • Written by Harold M from Cambridge

Since updating my iPad air to iOS 7.1 , this no longer works, I get a message that reads "This accessory requires to much power" when I plug just the adaptor in and nothing else, I also tried it with my wifes iPad 4th Gen and I get the same message. Both running iOS 7.1 was not a problem with iOS 7.0. Very frustrating! This worked great before and if it still worked after updating I would give this a 4 or 5 rating as it is was a great product, but now it is dead!

Perfect for my Canon 5D Mk II & iPad 4

    • Written by Joe A from Montreal

Purchased the adapter today. Plugged it to my iPad 4th gen. 128 GB. Plugged my Canon 5D Mk II into the USB side with the camera's cable. Turned the camera on; magic! Thumbnails of all the photos on the card (~225 RAW) appeared in less than a minute, along with a button to transfer them all to the iPad and one to delete all (from the camera). You can also select individual photos for downloading/deletion.

Downloaded all photos in about 10 min., which is reasonable for me. Then hooked my iPad to my desktop, selected the photos from Windows Explorer, took about 2-3 min. Then erased all photos from the iPad.

The cycle for me is complete, since I intend on using my iPad as backup during my photography trips. I would then download the photos to my desktop upon my return.

The photos can also be viewed on the iPad in a really decent quality.

All this with no apps to download (at least for the iPad 4) and no errors for me.

Highly recommended, especially if you have my combination of camera/tablet or similar.

No longer works - DO NOT BUY!

    • Written by Jonathan A from North Shields

This used to be a great product but no longer works since iOS 11.2. I'm now using iOS 11.3 and still all i get is the message: 'this accessory is not supported by this iPhone' - the iPhone in question is an iPhone 8 but it also stopped working on iPad and iPhone SE, all since iOS 11.2.

Shame on Apple for still selling this!

Great Way to Run my iPad into my DAC!

    • Written by Eric A from Fresno

I'm using this dongle to connect the audio output of my iPad Mini to my PS Audio Digital Link III DAC, and thence to my high-end living room stereo. It worked instantly, sending bit-perfect signal to my DAC. Unfortunately, my DAC does not charge the iPad through the cable, but otherwise I am thrilled. This way I can bypass the DAC and the headphone amp in my iPad and get right to the juicy, er, bits. I'm very happy about this, particularly since it lets me run Eno's amazing Scape app in very high fidelity audio.

    • Written by James S from Sammamish

Have you ever heard of a USB adapter that won't read a thumb drive? Really - a thumb drive - extra memory, no moving parts...but the ipad pro says it uses too much power. So what exactly is it good for - don't waste your money - and time. Store employee should have been aware of this CRITICAL short coming and informed me that it was a useless piece of garbage....
