Superb solution brings the iPad Pro 10.5 from tablet to mini laptop

    • Written by Philip T from Warsash

When I took delivery of my iPad Pro 10.5 I really wrestled with the concept of paying *another* £160 for a keyboard to compliment it.

But after a couple of weeks, the new iPad (this is my fifth iPad since the launch in 2010) has really demonstrated that it's possible for an iOS device to replace my MacBookPro for many of the tasks I use it for.

While on a business trip in Asia, I needed to type up some documents and found my laptop too heavy to lug around the mass transport system, from meeting to meeting. So I purchased the keyboard for my iPad and I've opened up a whole new world of useage for my iOS device.

I'm sorry, I can't agree with the other reviews comments that the keyboard is an origami nightmare - it's not. With a simple flick to the left and then use your thumb to flip out the keyboard itself, just requires a twist to the wrist to align the iPad into the storage grove and hey presto - a tablet becomes a mini laptop. The feel of the keys is far better than I dared hope, and far far better after a few days than my first impressions in the Apple Store led me to believe. I'm writing this with my iPad and keyboard perched on a stool and it's perfectly useable.

All in all, I think this device transforms and already superb tablet into a massively useful content creation device - and for this, it's worth the purchase price.

Don't let the others scare you!!!

    • Written by Madeline D from Happy Valley

I purchased my 10.5" iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, and Smart Keyboard two weeks ago, and haven't been disappointed yet. When I was considering the keyboard, I got a little freaked out by the mixed reviews, but decided to take the risk knowing that I could return it if it was faulty. I wish I could attach some pictures - It works and fits exactly like the pictures Apple provides above! The magnet it pretty strong, and I have ended up using the keyboard set-up as a stand even when I'm not typing things in. The keyboard is smaller than the one on my 13" 2013 MacBook Air, but it didn't take long to adjust, and going back and forth between the two hasn't caused any problems.

To address some common reviews: 1. my keyboard lays perfectly flat on a variety of surfaces, and the balance between the iPad and the keyboard is well designed. I've even been moderately successful in using the keyboard on my lap. :) 2. No, it is not a case, so no, it does not cover the entire device, but I just make sure to lay the iPad keyboard-side-down whenever I place it somewhere. I have a screen protector and a separate carrying case, so I'm not that concerned about scratches. 3. I really enjoy the look and feel of the keys. There were some complaints about the texture, etc., but I have found it easy and smooth to use and easy to clean!

So, bottom line: I am very glad I decided to go with the Smart Keyboard. Don't let the mixed reviews scare you! Like I said earlier, if the product is faulty - RETURN IT. If you have serious concerns, go to a Mac or Apple Store and try it out for yourself.

    Works Beautifully. Easy To Use.

    • Written by Margaret S from Antioch

While one reviewer gave a poor review saying that it's different from the picture Apple depicts, that's completely inaccurate. This keyboard is EXACTLY as pictured. Someone else describes the keyboard as lifting when resting on a flat surface. True, but about 1/16" of an inch. Barely noticeable, and certainly DOES NOT require you to "hold the keyboard down". I don't know who you folks are, but inaccurate descriptions are NOT helpful. Beautifully designed. Works perfectly. Use mine all the time with never an issue. Great functionality.

Great keyboard for the 10.5 iPad Pro

    • Written by Brian B from Santa Ynez

I was hesitant about purchasing this keyboard given a few of the critical reviews. I don’t know if some of the reviews were referring to earlier versions of the keyboard which did not stay flat and had connection issues, but I have to say that for a compact keyboard that is lightweight and does not require external charging I’m completely satisfied with the responsiveness of the keys and the build quality of the overall design.

I really like the added keyboard shortcuts including command + tab, scrolling a webpage, opening a second page in Safari, moving through a document and selecting text, etc. I know that I am going to get a lot of use out of this keyboard and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Go to the Apple store and give it a try.

    Amazing design and product

    • Written by David M from vienna

Keyboard does exactly what its designed for... to be a functioning ultra slim ultra portable keyboard and cover in one.
    5 stars.. 2 thumbs up.
My advice... buy the apple leather sleeve and pencil too. The leather sleeve provides the slimmest portable protection, and looks and feels spectacular. This is why you have an iPad Pro and not a laptop... slim down the baggage.

    Great keyboard

    • Written by James C from Fountain valley

I almost didn't get this keyboard because of the reviews. But I had a business trip coming up and had to get a keyboard last minute. The keyboard worked wonderfully for my trip. I was surprised how comfortable it feels given that it's a smaller form size. I'm a Systems Administrator and typing on a pc is all I do. I type surprisingly fast and accurate using the smart keyboard, with very little mistakes. I also like how it folds up nicely over the ipad's screen, and folds backward nicely when I want to just use the ipad like a tablet. This keyboard tipped the scale when I was choosing an ipad pro vs surface pro, and I'm very happy to have made the choice to go with ipad pro with smart keyboard. Highly recommended...or you should at least try it before being turned off by other negative reviews.

    Everything I expected

    • Written by David W from Orlando

I read the online reviews and was surprised the keyboard got such poor reviews. I have a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad 3 and thought it was wonderful. Unfortunately, the Logitech keyboard for the 10.5” iPad includes a back cover making the overall package quite thick. Since I have always carried my iPad in a sleeve, the lack of any protection for the back was of no concern. The Smart Keyboard looked like a good option. It sits flat on the desk unlike what was reported in another review. The entire setup is stable. I have used it on less than perfectly flat surfaces with no issues. I have not noticed any problems with the keyboard connecting. I find the key spacing good, and no problem to use. It’s not full size, but I didn’t expect it to be. In short, the keyboard is exactly what I expected. Only time will tell if it performs well long term.

Looks like the picture, lies flat, even holds Apple Pencil

    • Written by Grant G from Wildwood

It's a keyboard that doubles as a screen protector. If you want protection for the back, you might need to get a case instead. But, consider getting this keyboard and a decal or shell for the back of your iPad (but also, be careful of adding weight - I don't miss my old case). This keyboard is lightweight, attaches firmly enough to let you use the iPad on your lap, and *does* lie flat. If yours "floats" in the front and doesn't settle in a day, take it back to Apple and they'll (likely) replace it (happened to my wife). Added bonus I discovered: put the Pencil near the opening edge when the cover is closed, and it'll stick magnetically, firmly, in place.
Note for developers: There's no escape key or row of function keys. For me, the weight and ability to use it on my lap override the need for the extra keys, and I work around it with the on-screen function keys most development apps provide. There's also no backlight - but again, it's lightweight. Lights add weight and reduce battery life. For me, this keyboard strikes the right balance.

    Heres a real review.

    • Written by Kayson P from COLORADO SPRINGS

Look im definitely a apple guy over any device and im sure there are some people who arent but some of the reciews on here kill me inside so heres the low down of this case for the AVERAGE PERSON who DOESNT LOOK INTO EVERY LITTLE FLAW OF SOMETHING THEY PURCHASED. So the Key board case is a very unique and versatile cover case that doubles as a key board and a stand for the iPad. When It unfolds from the screen protector into keyboard it holds the iPad at one angle and you cant adjust it unfortunately, but that one angle is good for virtually any situation you are in. Personally i think this feels great to type on its just a bit of a change due to key travel depending on what your used too, if youre a pc kinda person it definetly feels nothing like a mechanical keyboard. The keys are more of a butterfly press feel. Yes the keyboard does lift literally a bit off of a flat surface AND NO it does not affect your typing at all. Also its possible to type in your lap but it does feel just a bit weird. Hope that helps people figure out what they want.

    Great Smart Keyboard Experience

    • Written by Andrew L from Mesa

I am not sure what the other people are experiencing on this keyboard, but I have had the 12.9 and 9.7 inch Smart Keyboards and this 10.5" one feels exactly the same. It is a great keyboard and Smart Cover for the iPad. This was never designed to protect the back of the unit, and if you look at the product you can clearly see this before purchasing. The keyboard needs to be broken in for 10 seconds of soft flexing on the folds and the thing sits FLAT on a desk or table. Take the time to use the product and rate give it a real review! Overall, I absolutely loooove this keyboard, and I am using it with the new Apple Leather Sleeve on my iPad Pro 10.5" as well.

    Works Well

    • Written by Michael F from Scottsdale

This keyboard cover is very thin and not too heavy. It is literally barely thicker than the regular cover. I tried using a bluetooth keyboard that came with my mac and not every keystroke would create a typed character. That doesn't happen with this keyboard as it makes a direct connection to the iPad. As far as typing goes, it is what it is. It is not a full size computer keyboard. But it is easy enough and comfortable enough to type on and it is much better than typing on the iPad screen. I really like it.

    Excellent!

    • Written by Mikhail G from Richmond Hill

This keyboard is all I imagined it to be. It is not misrepresented on the picture in any way. The magnet is sufficiently strong to hold it glued to my new iPad Pro even when I lift the iPad from the table holding on any side.
The keyboard itself does not bend upwards and lays perfectly flat on the table where I am typing this review.
So I don't know what's wrong with some of the reviewers keyboard but mine is perfect!

    NO DESIGN FLAW

    • Written by Britt L from Santa Fe

This is in answer to “Small But Serious Design Flaw.” Which states that the keyboard does not lie flat on a flat surface and I think the reviewer mentioned a desk or a kitchen table. My thought would be to look to that surface. I am using the Smart Keyboard on a lap desk and it is completely and comfortably stable. The keyboard is small and you must adjust to that, and I’m still challenged by three or four sections I must arrange in order to view the iPad Pro and use the keyboard, but that’s probably just a failure of dexterity rather than a design flaw. I am very happy with the whole arrangement.

    Absolutely love it.

    • Written by Michael K from Bella Vista

I have been using the Smart Keyboard with my 10.5 inch iPad Pro for the last couple weeks and I am absolutely loving it. I personally love typing on it, and find myself just randomly typing on it because I love the feel of the keys. It may not be the best keyboard for typing out there, but it is a pleasure to use in my opinion. It’s light and portable, I love how it lays flat even when you lay the iPad on a table, with the cover on the back of the device. It makes this iPad Pro truly a personal and portable computer for me. Game changer.

Makes the iPad a different device

    • Written by Dennis A from Los Altos

I thought I'd just use this cover when traveling without my computer. It turns out I'm hooked. I use it all the time and the keyboard works great when I need one. When I don't, the extra weight hasn't inconvenienced me much. In short, this cover has turned my iPad into a terrific ersatz computer.

    Just Works

    • Written by John M from Murrieta

I have not experienced the same issues that others have with the keyboard not lying flat. When I purchased that this a few days ago I was worried that the keys had to short of a travel and I would not like typing on it or touch typing would be to difficult. I also felt that using it as a regular case would make it to bulky, but this was the best option of what was available. I am happy to report that the keyboard works wonderfully typing on it is a breeze and very convenient. The added bulk of the keyboard is barely noticeable and I carry the iPad with me everywhere. Overall I think this is an excellent purchase that if you plan to do a lot of typing like me you will really enjoy.

Best Keyboard Ever & Light Weight

    • Written by Joseph J from Brooklyn

I purchased the Logitech keyboard for the 10.5 iPad Pro and found it to be too heavy, although the typing experience is fine. However, the Apple keyboard weighs on about 8.6 oz (244g), and a delight for me to type with. I like the feel of the keys and that it takes a little pressure to press the keys, unlike the MacBook (2016) butterfly keyboard. If you don't use the keyboard a lot but need one at times, you may want to get the smart cover as well, which only weighs about 3.4 oz (98g), and switch them out if weight is an issue.

Perfect complement to the iPad Pro

    • Written by Jason T from BRISTOL

Like many others, I was hesitant to fork out an extra £160 on top of the iPad Pro... but I'm totally glad I did. The design of this PERFECTLY complements the iPad Pro 10.5 inch. It's incredibly lightweight it allow you to keep it attached when you're not using the keyboard part. It protects the iPad screen really well when not in use. A pleasure to type with. And you don't need to worry about batteries or bluetooth... it all draws it's power from the magic connector - which magically and satisfiably snaps together. It folds really nicely offering a stand as well.

If I was to provide some constructive feedback to Jony and the design team, I'd suggest the next version has the option to make the keys glow if needed. Unfortunately it's very difficult to type in the dark as the screen isn't angled well enough to shine onto the keyboard. But if you won't be solely typing in the dark, then this won't be an issue for you!

If you have the iPad Pro, you need this smart keyboard in your life!
