    Very nice keyboard

    • Written by THOMAS D from SAVANNAH

I like the physical keyboard but wish that it had a better feeel because this hard denim like material makes me think that within time it may dry rot and ill have to go out and get another. Another thing I wish apple had a rear cover like they have for the iPad Pro 9 in. But I was able to find a back case compatible with the Smart Keyboard at amazon for about $16. Sorry I cant post the link but it’s called a companion cover.

Not perfect but one of the best

    • Written by Lee S from Singapore

Have always used Logitech products. Rarely disappointed by them. The same goes for this one. Those who criticize this product are those who expect everything out of a product (perfect design and a low cost). There is no such thing! When you have a full solid cover, detachable backlit keyboard, a kickstand that articulates a wide range of angles in landscape mode (can stand in portrait mode as well) , additional row of function buttons, there would be compromises in terms of weight and size. I can't find another keyboard that offers all these at this price (even though it's not cheap, but still cheaper than Apple's). Frankly, the trick is to know how to place it on your lap to type. Given any other laptop on your lap, you will still complain about the impossible amount of heat generated from your laptop. But iPad doesn't have this problem at all! I'd rather try to find the best position to balance it on my lap than to suffer from the impossible amount of heat generated by laptop. I didn't regret buying this over Apple's version.

    Not Steve Jobs Quality

    • Written by WillIam M from Estero

    Positive:
    - keyboard very responsive
    - powered by the iPad, no batteries required
    - great color scheme

    Negative:
    - poor stability, iPad tips the keyboard up just a bit
    - poor design, when pad is folded completely back for landscape screen use, case buckles outwards, leaving odd gap, does not fit snugly to the iPad
    - no pen holder, while there is a magnetic option, it doesn't offer enough protection for the pen, which itself has a flimsy charging cap
    - angle of screen too far laid back, needs to be more upright
    - no rear protection, meaning no camera protection

Based on the other comments I'd say I'm not the only one experiencing problems, I'm going to be returning this, hopefully apple will redesign or a 3rd party will make a better product.

Too Thick for a Case, Too Thin for a Keyboard

    • Written by Keith B from Minneapolis

I purchased the Smart Keyboard to go along with my new 10.5 inch iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. From the start, I’ve found it to be problematic as both a case and keyboard.

As a case, it adds bulk and weight, without protecting the back of the iPad Pro. It’s difficult to configure for viewing and when you do get it arranged properly, the keyboard is sitting exposed on the back of the iPad, just waiting for a key to be pressed inadvertently as you try to move the iPad. When configured for typing, it feels less than sturdy, probably because my fingers keep hitting the screen as I attempt to use the number row. The configuration is cramped with no room at the top of the keyboard.

As for typing, you might as well type on the on-screen keyboard, the glass gives you about as much key travel and feedback. I thought the 12 inch MacBook had an awful keyboard, but this one makes it look good. The only good thing that I can say about it as a keyboard is that I have not experienced any issues with it laying flat while in typing mode. Many other reviewers have had a problem with this.

I’ve returned and replaced the Smart Keyboard with an $18 case that is thin and protects the entire iPad and a $20 Bluetooth keyboard that you can actually type on and that has more iOS specific keys than the Apple product. Even though it’s actually a bit narrower than the Smart Keyboard, it feels much more roomy and natural.

    Good keyboard, no issues

    • Written by Kate R from Wellington

Felt the need to add my review to others, having seen some warning about the keyboard not laying flat and complaining about the lack of back protection. Firstly, my keyboard lays perfectly flat and I have no issue from the weight of the iPad on the back rest. I also find I can use it easily from my lap (as I now to write this review!), making it great for couch use. It's abundantly clear that there is no back protection, and personally having had a back-less iPad cover in one form or another for three years now, I've never missed having a back, in fact I appreciate the feel of the metallic back finish much more than a synthetic plasticy case, and have never had an issue with damage. It also helps keep the weight down - which is just as well as this is my one big issue with the keyboard/cover being that it adds a fair amount of weight and I really notice it when I take my iPad out and about with me in my handbag. Finally, I'd have loved a choice of colour, there are many nice ones for the regular cover, why not this? Purely cosmetic though and not enough to detract from a 5 star review as the overall functionality and the additional capability the keyboard adds to my use of the iPad has been great. No regrets!

    Decent Keyboard

    • Written by Christian H from Sandy

Overall this is much improvement from the last 9.7 generation. However, after one week of lite use two of my keys have stopped working. I know Apple will warranty this, but that is ridiculous. I will probably just return it and get a different one.

Useful but there are better options out there

    • Written by Ryan D from Naples

The fact that it was designed by Apple means it'll work pretty well and fit is great, BUT the feel of the keys leaves much to be desired. There are other brands out there that will feel a lot better and more like a real keyboard if you're going to type a lot. If you're only typing an email here or there then I'm sure it'll work great for you. Honestly, it is way over priced for what you get.

    Works as advertised

    • Written by Anthony C from Kissimmee

The cover is what it is. Its ultra-thin, and allows you to type leaving the screen real-estate for apps. Is it perfect, No. But this is the real world, and nothing is perfect. Does it balance convenience with function? Yep! sure does! so in my book the Smart Keyboard is a winner and a keeper

    Buy This for iPad Pro!

    • Written by Elizabeth H from Tuscaloosa

I recently purchased my first iPad Pro (10.5 inch) and was on the fence about whether or not I should invest in this smart keyboard to go along with my iPad. I'm so glad I decided to buy this, because it pairs wonderfully with my new iPad! The keyboard has brought a whole new level of enjoyment to my iPad experience and I've actually been more productive on the iPad because of it. I also like how thin it is. Like others, I would eventually like to see a silicone case to protect the back of the iPad though. If you're buying the iPad Pro, get this keyboard as well. Mine has no problems lying flat either when I'm typing on a hard surface or just sitting on the couch with my iPad in my lap.

Was good but now design flaw

    • Written by Sean O from WARSAW

Was so excited about the new iPad and had a great experience with the 9.7 in Pro but now very disappointed. The 10.5 Smart Keyboard has a massive design flaw in that is hurting my initial experience with seems to be great upgrades on the 10.5 iPad Pro. The keyboard will not lay flat and I can see the reviews are starting to support an issue here. It is not an issue of being news, the issue is that there is too much of a gap in the design between the iPad and the folded top so it causes the case to rock back about 1/4 inch turning the keyboard into a diving board. Have to take it back as I don't see a conceivable way it can be fixed.

The perfect complement to your iPad Pro

    • Written by Bradley C from Papillion

This is Apple's case that they want everyone to use. It's an evolution on their Smart Cover if you have ever used one. The keys actually feel pretty good, better than the keys on the 9.7" iPad Pro even though you think it wouldn't make a difference. I love the soft cloth type material that lays against the screen. Call me crazy but I think it helps wipe smudges off the screen when I close it. The stand is also surprisingly stable, I can push on any part of the screen and it doesn't wobble. It also sticks to the desk decently well and doesn't slide around. It has a small footprint when it's open. It also works well sitting Indian style (my favorite seated position), seated at a desk and when sitting on a couch. It does not work as well when laying in bed though due to it's fixed angle. I found that the angle works in most places but it just doesn't when laying down. I found myself holding it to get the perfect angle. The keyboard also has the option of folding around to the back of the case when you want to use the iPad like an iPad instead of like a laptop. Overall, the case looks good and functions well. It shows off the beautiful design of the iPad and doesn't add much weight. I do wish that they made an option with leather or gave us color choices to the keyboard. There is no backlighting but that doesn't bother me that much. I've known the keyboard for most of my life and all the keys are where they should be, if you need to look down the light from the iPad screen is enough to see them. The keys sit close to the screen and you can easily reach up and touch the screen while using the keyboard. There is no Apple Pencil holder, it would be so easy to add it somewhere but they want you to buy the sleeve. However, using the Apple Pencil was a joy when you can just fold the cover back or just pop it off. I just used an old Microsoft Surface Pen Loop (ironic?) on my iPad to hold the pen. It's the perfect case for someone who wants to use the iPad as a tablet with a keyboard.

Better than the only other option (to date)

    • Written by Laura S from Chicago

Tried the Logitech Slim Combo first -- see my review of that product for description of what - for me- are fatal flaws. Tried this one next: it importantly succeeds where the Logitech fails. This one attaches to the iPad with strong magnets when open and when closed - the opposite of the Logitech disconnected halves that never close securely.

Would like some back protection (thin!) and backlight - but as better of two options on the market to date, this one wins. Either way, i *am* hooked on Smartconnector (both Logitech and Apple have this) - no need to charge the keyboard separately.

If Apple could work out backlighting and perhaps provide a very thin silicone back cover option, this would be the clear winner.

    Works Great

    • Written by Paul B from Allentown

I find it hard to knock stars of something that is not supposed to be a back cover because it is not a back cover. I also would like a back cover, but I was under no illusions that it would be. I used to have the 12.9 with the Smart Keyboard as well and this one works easily as well. I find it a bit to small for my big hands, but at the same time it has to be the size of the iPad so that's what I get. It does it's job well. The smart connector and magnetic closure works flawlessly. I also like that it magnetically attaches to the back of my naked iPad. It is a great accessory to have for productivity for me, I can type much faster, view my iPad better and overall just find it more functional than an onscreen keyboard. I also am not sure about others issues with it not being flat on the table. At first I thought mine had the same problem, but once it is sitting on a table I just adjust the iPad itself for a moment and it sits flat like it is supposed to. If you order one and you cannot seem to get it to lay flat, exchange it. If you are nowhere near to an Apple Store I would not be afraid to order it, it works as its supposed to.

    Fantastic accessory!

    • Written by John B from Park City

The iPad Pro 10.5" and Smart Keyboard work extremely well together. I find the keyboard easy and efficient to use despite having large hands. Response time is immediate and I am completely impressed with the function of the keyboard. The only reason I did not give five stars is because the folding/unfolding process is a bit unwieldy. I'm sure I will become more proficient at it with more use, but it is a bit clumsy when setting up and folding. Otherwise, this is a outstanding tool that definitely expands ability to use an iPad for more things.

    Game Changer For Prooductivity

    • Written by Eric K from Charlotte

I am a heavy longtime user of my iPad (now iPad Pro) for work as well as play. I was on the fence after purchasing the new 10.5 inch iPad Pro whether I really needed or would like the keyboard since I had become so familiar with the onscreen keyboard over the last several years. Well, I want to encourage anyone who may be on the fence like I was to definitely take the plunge and purchase one. The keyboard is a game changer for productivity and I actually find myself performing even more tasks on my iPad than before simply because the keyboard makes speed and precision so much better.

As a side note: I've read the reviews about some users having issues with the keyboard not laying flat on a table. I can happily say that I have NOT had that or any other issues. That being said, there may just be a bad batch out there impacting a subset of users. If there is an issue I have no doubt that Apple with (from my experience) superior support will make it right for those users, so I would not let that keep you from purchasing one if you're interested.

    What was Apple thinking?

    • Written by Nancy G from Downers Grove

I love the new iPad Pro, the display is a wonder, pictures are nearly life-like.. However, to bring out such a fancy machine and then have such a ridiculous keyboard that leaves the entire back open is nuts. What happened to a nice slim folio keyboard that also protects the case? I'm hopeful more keyboards will come out in the next few months, but it is disappointing to have a great iPad and then a silly keyboard - plus when it folds over there is a silly lump. I don't think Steve Jobs would have allowed this!

    No back cover

    • Written by bruce D from SAMMAMISH

Seriously disappointed there is no back cover for this, nor has Apple chosen to make a Silicone Back cover for the 10.5" iPad Pro like they previously did for the 9.7". Keyboard works fine, but the absence of any form of protection is a fatal flaw that should cause one to look elsewhere. Surprisingly bad choices by both Apple Engineering and Marketing.

High price, no back protection, no backlit keyboard are disadvantages

    • Written by Deborah M from North Bangor

I had to buy this sight unseen as the local big box store had no covers for the 10.5 inch iPad Pro. I was not happy to see there is no back cover to protect the iPad once it arrived. I bought a Smart Cover for my first iPad and stopped using it as soon as I was able to buy a cover that protected the front and back. There is no way that the back will not get scratched without a cover! I like how the cover protects the front and I like the keyboard itself, but for $159 I would like to protect the entire iPad! I would like to see a backlit keyboard as well. I have only used this for a few hours, but will probably return it for something that will protect it better.

Lovely keyboard; does not include magic force field or other accessories

    • Written by Rebecca F from College Station

This keyboard, as described, is exactly like the 9.7" version, but slightly wider. I found the 9.7" comfortable enough (if a bit cramped), and this one is even better. I personally find the feel and sound of the keys to be very satisfying, but - for what it's worth - I also love the new MBP keyboards. If you don't, we may have different keyboard preferences. (Both incidentally have dramatically improved my RSI problems).

I did have an issue with the front edge lifting slightly when I first set it up. I had the exact same problem with my 9.7" and now, as then, resettling it and typing out a few sentences fixed the problem permanently.

As for the back case, this keyboard has never come with a back case. I used and loved the silicone back case on my last iPad, but when I wanted to write on the iPad, the back cover + keyboard really made it too thick to be comfortable. When I couldn't order the silicone case, I realized that the back is always either propped up, covered by the keyboard, or in a sleeve anyway. I would probably buy one if I could, but it really isn't necessary with the keyboard. If you are worried about dropping it, I would recommend the Logitech or one of the many, rugged third-party cases.

And pro tip: you can hold down the ⌘ key in any app and on the home screen to see built-in keyboard shortcuts. A lot of things - like searching, going home, and switching apps - can be done very easily without dedicated buttons.

    Amazing Keyboard!

    • Written by Shelia H from ACWORTH

I have to admit, the only reason I bought the keyboard was because smart covers and sleeves were the only covers available for the new iPad 10.5 Pro. Wow! What a surprise the keyboard has turned out to be. It is simply amazing and I have truly fallen in love! I have taken the time to learn more shortcut functions making the keyboard soar giving me the ability to do most anything. I really like the way the keyboard folds and provides a little extra support when taking photos or shooting a video. I like how easy it is to stand my iPad Pro up to watch a movie, and I love the way the keyboard folds in neatly and becomes a Smart Cover to protect my screen, lock my iPad Pro, and securely hold my Apple Pencil on the top of the Smart Cover. Above all, I love the ease of the keyboard and standing position making journaling more fun than I could imagine. Yes, I would still like to have a cover for the back of my new iPad 10.5, but I'm so glad not having that option as a choice encouraged me to make what has turned out to be another great Apple experience. Thanks Apple!
