New iPad Pro 10.5 Smart Keyboard

    • Written by Weston B from Benton

So I was under the impression that the 10.5 version of the Smart Keyboard would have a redesigned key layout; this is not the case--the key layout is identical to that of the 9.7 version. The picture for this product is a blatant, if not strategic, misrepresentation of what you will receive. SMH...

    Small But Serious Design Flaw

    • Written by Jay Scott N from Greenville

When resting on a flat surface (e.g. a desktop or table) with the iPad seated properly, the Smart Keyboard does not lie flat. Instead, the weight of the 10.5" iPad tips the leading edge of the keyboard up about ¼", making it difficult to type on because the user must either hold the keyboard down on the desk or prop the iPad up from behind. Apple's legendary attention to detail seems to have failed them here. Do not buy this product unless you're prepared to hold down a keyboard that should not need holding down.

Extremely disappointed in Apple. How did they let this go to production?

    • Written by Raymond K from San Francisco

I have the 9.7 iPad Pro and just bought a 10.5 iPad Pro. The Smart Keyboard for the 9.7 IPad Pro was great, but this one for the 10.5 is really terrible design.

First, when you flip the cover behind the iPad, and put it in reading mode, the magnets are not strong enough to hold it in place. So if you lift up the iPad using your left hand the keyboard will flop down, and the cover detaches to just hang in the air.

Secondly when you covert to keyboard mode, the keyboard doesn't even lay flat! Seriously, did no one at Apple even attempt to use this product while testing? It is extremly uncomfortable to type when the keyboard is bending up slightly.

So the two major uses for this Smart Keyboard, in both landscape mode and portrait is annoying, and feels like a cheap 3rd party accessory. Do not buy this. Unfortunately you don't have very many other options. The 9.7 inch Smart Cover had none of these problems.

I might even stick with my 9.7 inch Smart Keyboard for my 10.5 inch iPad even though it doesn't fit perfectly, at least its way more usable this junk.

Apple, seriously, just make take your 9.7 inch Smart Keyboard and make it slightly bigger, then everything will be ok.

The cover that offers no protection.

    • Written by Walter W from Glasgow

The Smart keyboard, in my case fore the 9.7 model, is nice to use as a keyboard. Unfortunately it is only a cover, and offers no protection in even the most modest fall, as I discovered to my cost. My local; Apple store, Braehead, in Glasgow, helpfully explained that if offers no actual protection at all, and they are right. Good keyboard, lousy cover, no impact protection whatsoever

    Serious Quality Issue

    • Written by Gilbert L

Just upgraded from the 9.7" iPad Pro w/ Smart Keyboard, which I have been using for about a year.

Like a couple other reviewers commented, when placed in typing position, the bottom of the keyboard does not lie flat on the surface (a flat one, of course), making it impossible to type.

I know this is not a design flaw as the 9.7" version worked perfectly and I loved it.

The only other note I have to potential buyers is that this Smart Keyboard does add quite a bit of weight to the iPad (relatively speaking) - slightly over 50% of the iPad's weight.

Will be bringing the keyboard back to Apple Store and see what they say...

    No back cover

    • Written by bruce D from SAMMAMISH

Seriously disappointed there is no back cover for this, nor has Apple chosen to make a Silicone Back cover for the 10.5" iPad Pro like they previously did for the 9.7". Keyboard works fine, but the absence of any form of protection is a fatal flaw that should cause one to look elsewhere. Surprisingly bad choices by both Apple Engineering and Marketing.

    What was Apple thinking?

    • Written by Nancy G from Downers Grove

I love the new iPad Pro, the display is a wonder, pictures are nearly life-like.. However, to bring out such a fancy machine and then have such a ridiculous keyboard that leaves the entire back open is nuts. What happened to a nice slim folio keyboard that also protects the case? I'm hopeful more keyboards will come out in the next few months, but it is disappointing to have a great iPad and then a silly keyboard - plus when it folds over there is a silly lump. I don't think Steve Jobs would have allowed this!

Was good but now design flaw

    • Written by Sean O from WARSAW

Was so excited about the new iPad and had a great experience with the 9.7 in Pro but now very disappointed. The 10.5 Smart Keyboard has a massive design flaw in that is hurting my initial experience with seems to be great upgrades on the 10.5 iPad Pro. The keyboard will not lay flat and I can see the reviews are starting to support an issue here. It is not an issue of being news, the issue is that there is too much of a gap in the design between the iPad and the folded top so it causes the case to rock back about 1/4 inch turning the keyboard into a diving board. Have to take it back as I don't see a conceivable way it can be fixed.

Too Thick for a Case, Too Thin for a Keyboard

    • Written by Keith B from Minneapolis

I purchased the Smart Keyboard to go along with my new 10.5 inch iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. From the start, I’ve found it to be problematic as both a case and keyboard.

As a case, it adds bulk and weight, without protecting the back of the iPad Pro. It’s difficult to configure for viewing and when you do get it arranged properly, the keyboard is sitting exposed on the back of the iPad, just waiting for a key to be pressed inadvertently as you try to move the iPad. When configured for typing, it feels less than sturdy, probably because my fingers keep hitting the screen as I attempt to use the number row. The configuration is cramped with no room at the top of the keyboard.

As for typing, you might as well type on the on-screen keyboard, the glass gives you about as much key travel and feedback. I thought the 12 inch MacBook had an awful keyboard, but this one makes it look good. The only good thing that I can say about it as a keyboard is that I have not experienced any issues with it laying flat while in typing mode. Many other reviewers have had a problem with this.

I’ve returned and replaced the Smart Keyboard with an $18 case that is thin and protects the entire iPad and a $20 Bluetooth keyboard that you can actually type on and that has more iOS specific keys than the Apple product. Even though it’s actually a bit narrower than the Smart Keyboard, it feels much more roomy and natural.

    Not Steve Jobs Quality

    • Written by WillIam M from Estero

    - keyboard very responsive
    - powered by the iPad, no batteries required
    - great color scheme

    - poor stability, iPad tips the keyboard up just a bit
    - poor design, when pad is folded completely back for landscape screen use, case buckles outwards, leaving odd gap, does not fit snugly to the iPad
    - no pen holder, while there is a magnetic option, it doesn't offer enough protection for the pen, which itself has a flimsy charging cap
    - angle of screen too far laid back, needs to be more upright
    - no rear protection, meaning no camera protection

Based on the other comments I'd say I'm not the only one experiencing problems, I'm going to be returning this, hopefully apple will redesign or a 3rd party will make a better product.

    So disappointed

    • Written by Kathy L from OCEANSIDE

I do not understand why apple would make such a nice keyboard for the I Pad pro and then have no way of protecting the back of the i-pad. Such a beautiful accessory until you realize that there is no protection on the back. I guess they feel if you ever drop it it will always land on the keyboard side. Such a disappointment . Hopefully they will change the keyboard case or sell a back that could be nicely incorporated .

    Keyboard does not lie flat

    • Written by Myrna G from Carrollton

I am very disappointed with the keyboard. The weight of the iPad pulls the keyboard up about a quarter inch from the table, so that it bounces when I type. This is not what I would expect from Apple. I'm returning it and looking for a different product.

    Worst Apple product

    • Written by William W from Abermule

So Smart Keyboard , worst piece of Apple style over substance I have ever used. The connector never connects, the keyboard feel is not a patch on my old Logitech keyboard.
Sadly this is a waste of time and I have to resort to using my old iPad on the road once more. So feel like the £1k spent on pad pencil etc a waste of momey. Come on Apple up the game we don’t all worship at the shrine of Jobs

I bought the keyboard, thinking it's Apple - it must be good. Boy was I wrong. It worked OK for the first year, but now some keys work intermittently. I've trying cleaning off the contact area - no help. When I'm at a meeting taking notes and this happens, it's a huge deal.

Very disappointed - should have bought the Logitech.

    Absolutely Unreliable!!!

    • Written by Vincent A from Grapevine

I am now on my second smart keyboard for the iPad Pro 10.5". It is constantly, unexpectedly and intermittently failing. The keyboard remains connected and just suddenly no longer types. I can remove the iPad Pro and reconnect it and...nothing. I have to fully power cycle the iPad Pro before it is able to see the keyboard again.

Given the pricepoint for this accessory and the specific claims of how this is a faster and more reliable connection than a bluetooth keyboard have totally been incorrect. Save your money and go with something that support bluetooth because either the connector or the software is to blame here.

    Completely Useless

    • Written by John M from Yelm

This is my second Apple IPad Pro Keyboard. The first Apple replaced because it wasn’t working consistently, it kept throwing up errors, and it had issues connecting very often. This problem is so frustrating it renders my iPad Pro unusable for what I bought it for and, we are thinking of migrating everything to Microsoft because we are simply tired of the Apple challenges we have run into across the board lately.

    1. The iPad is not secure in the case. It will fall out if you lift the case. Is only secure on two sides. Not all four sides.
    2. No loop for the Apple pen. You have to carry it separately. What's the point? Other cases have a place to secure the pen.

    Returned and got an alternative...

    • Written by Jenny D from Park Ridge

Got this keyboard with my iPad and realized there is no extra protection for the iPad itself, just the screen when its closed. Not only that, but it is $159 and there is no protection plan for this item, just a limited warranty...

I returned it to best buy and bought a ZAGG which at least provides full protection for the iPad.
