    great idea, terrible execution

    • Written by Alexander H from Fremont

The concept of this keyboard and its foldability into different positions is great, and this would be a 5 star review if it weren’t for the fact that mine (and by the looks of it, many many others) has completely stopped working after just about a year of use.
It started around 6 months with the occasional need to do a quick disconnect and reconnect to fix the issue.
But now my iPad will not recognize the key word at all and I threw $160+ down the drain at apple.

10.5 Smart Keyboard - pricey paperweight. Offered 8% discount buy new

    • Written by Dawn V from Lethbridge

13 months after purchase, keyboard stopped working. I had heard that some were being repaired or replaced through the forums so I thought I would ask. Support desk suggested I take it to store as it was listed for repair. I drove two hours to the closest location to be told it did not work. I was offered a new one at a deep purchase discount of 8% . My response.....Why would I spend $180 to repurchase what was clearly a defective product?

Good...at first, after 2 years doesn’t work - and expensive

    • Written by LINDA P from FAIRFAX

Apple, please make items that function well, are easy to use, look good and last. Please do not turn into the Cuisinart of electronics - used to be well made, highly functional, long life....I guess various executives cut costs, drove up revenues and made huge amounts of money as they rode the brand into the ground....you can only get away with that for so long. And by the way, I might even give up my iPhone if you continue to make them so slippery it’s inevitable it gets dropped and broken...can’t you add ridge lines to the sides?

Great Feel, Spill Resistant, Fast But... Section 508 Accessible it is NOT

    • Written by William C from Bristow

Really love the keyboard and have had one on each iPad using it regularly. My iPad 12.9" generation 1 has had the keyboard on it since it came out in Sept 2015. Yes, the lettering can wear and yes the space bar gets shiny with use. I have one on my iPad Pro 10.5 as well, same story.

The biggest single problem is that there is no way to activate the "Siri keyboard" or "speech to text" when the keyboard is attached. You must remove the keyboard to have the iPad soft keyboard appear. Then it eventually activates the speech to text and the button with the microphone appears.

I will commonly use speech-to-text to dictate my emails, my notes, and even in Pages for word processing. Not having a microphone key on Apple iOS keyboards is a huge hinderance, even for those not disabled for which it is a necessity.

As other reviewers have noted, Apple's attention to detail on this product is somewhat disappointing.

When any Apple keyboard is attached, the iPad is no longer Section 508 Accessibility qualified. Accordingly the Apple keyboard needs to be banned from government purchasing as it is operates contrary to accessibility use law.

Too expensive for short life span

    • Written by Peter W from Westfield

This product is not to Apple standards. It worked nicely, then intermittently, and now not at all. Just two years of reasonable use. I won't buy again. The cost is too high for the lifespan of the product.

    Stops connecting to the iPad

    • Written by Raymond C from Lockport

I have the same problem everyone is reporting in these reviews - my keyboard no longer connects to my ipad pro. It's just out of warranty, and Apple has not acknowledged this widespread issue so they refuse to replace it. I kept perfect care of my keyboard, which looks brand new. I always handled it with perfect care and never dropped it. It's too expensive to fail like this. I would strongly advise against purchasing this accessory.

SHAMEFUL! Why Haven’t These Been Recalled Also?

    • Written by Tammy G from Sacramento

Absolutely shameful that Apple knows that these keyboards don’t work properly or, in my case, not at all and they don’t recall and replace them with improved models. The keys started not working or getting stuck shortly after purchase and now it’s dead. The keyboard has been treated with the greatest respect due to its cost. The “genius” at the store had the gall to say to me, “Too bad you bought one of these, I wouldn’t have.” Of course they offered to sell me another one for the “unheard of” generous offer of 20% off. Give me a break!

    Unpleasant for typing

    • Written by Eduardo M. A. P from S.Paulo

When open, keyboard do not lay down properly and typing in it is quite unplesant. Besides, when reading and keyboard is fold, you may press the board and interfere on your Pad. I already bought two keyboards. It is not well designed.

    Listen to the Reviews

    • Written by Shawn S from baltimore

Yesterday I opened my keyboard cover and was presented with the error message that this accessory wasn’t supported and the keyboard wouldn’t work. Then it would work intermittently. Today it totally died. As others have commented, I shocked apple continues to sell this, when clearly there’s a quality issue. A one year warranty on such a defective product is shameful. I certainly won’t be buying another at $159.00.

    Wish I’d read the reviews!

    • Written by Bob J from Ewhurst

Normally Apple are all about quality but frankly what on earth went wrong here? I got it out the box and was astonished to see that it won’t even lie flat. By placing a pencil under the back support it tips the iPad forwards just enough to lay the keyboard flat but it is a real shame that this is what is needed. How long it will actually last is unknown as I have only just bought it but I have already experienced connectivity issues ( 1 day of use).

That said, the typing experience is not a bad one and certainly a lot better (for me) than the on-board keypad.

Apple should review this product immediately, it is not durable. I can't believe it is an Apple product. Apple needs to extend this warranty and fix it!

Limited Life - Apple should admit the issue

    • Written by Grant W from Swindon

What a disappointment. Apple need to admit that this product will last “about a year” and then stop working.

Like many other reviewers on here - my Smart Keyboard just lasted the warranty period and then stopped working all together. It was within 13 months of purchase and Apple store refused to replace/help. Usual nonsense about it being “not a known problem” and “normal wear and tear”. I had been in touch with them when it was 11 months old and I had started getting the accessory problem warning. They just went through a few simple fixes and it would connect for a while and then stop.

It is frustrating that a company which makes so much of its reputation is prepared to allow such problems to continue. I was not even offered a discount on a new keyboard. I know it is a 12 month warranty period; i know that it is what we agree to when buying the product. However, this is a well documented issue.

Please sell this item responsibly - be honest about these issues with your customers. This keyboard will likely last a year and you will then need to buy a new one.

I also noted that the keyboard really drained the power after about 10-11 months.

This keyboard breaks after about 1year

    • Written by Joshua M from Millbrae

The connectivity of this keyboard with the iPad breaks after about 1 year of intermittent use. My keyboard effectively now is a stand only. I do not recommend you spend $160 for thus keyboard. Look elsewhere.

Beautifully designed yet so full of flaws

    • Written by Guilherme V from Santo André

I've bought a Smart Keyboard because when I bought my iPod Pro the Genius Bar salesman told me wonderful things about it and so I was convinced. I used everyday for my job and at my university for 1 year and half without any problem, tho I find it very frustrating that there is no back cover and I had to put it inside my leather briefcase so I could avoid damages behind it and on the corners of my iPad.

My main issue, like everyone else here, is that after some time, beats me why (maybe because of dust or even the worn out magnetic attachment things), the keyboard won't connect as it should: I need to recharge my iPad and start pressing keys randomly so it can recognize it. If I use it as a cover, I will need to do it again, what is terrible because I lose about 5 minutes each time looking for a charger and fiddling with it.

It is an absurd that I suffer the same issue as the first gen keyboard and Apple won't repair it just because it forgot to include in the recall, despite being the same problem.

Letters come off after 6 mos and Apple considers it “wear and tear”

    • Written by Jeffrey A from Redwood City

The keyboard itself is OK. The magnets can shift and your iPad can fall out if you’re not careful.
But after 6 months, the letters should not start coming off the keys.
Apple tries to explain this “normal wear and tear”, to which I say: Your keyboard should not be unusable after 6 mos.
This is not a quality product with a reasonable lifespan unfortunately, and Apple seems to be having a lot of difficulty taking responsibility for product quality problems of late.
Also: The iPad Apple Store App doesn’t support adding reviews - only consuming them. Perhaps this was done by design? ;)
If Apple wants to design this product properly it can’t have “printed-on” letters, and it needs a backlit keyboard.

It works only when it wants

    • Written by Regis S B from São Paulo

The Keyboard is an essencial point on IpadPro but it doesn’t last more than 1.5 years. Row thought the comments and you’ll see that I'm being honest. It fails every day, reject the connection and after 2-3 minutes it became alive.... after 5 minutes it disconnects in the middle of your text, and 30 seconds it connects again.
I brought it to Genius Bar and they say that the guarantee is over, and the can give me a USD 20 of discount if I’m purchasing a new one. That’s ridiculous. Just check how much comments we have here with this situation. I purchase an Logitech k780 to work as combo with my PC and MacBook and THAT'S is a great keyboard. I'm frustrated in the way apple treat consumers and its a clear product fault, its not a misuse or something in this way. The product has a MAJOR PROBLEM syncing and you’ll see everybody complaining about that - disposable product, really not the kind of think that worth buying - that's sad, because the functionality is great WHEN it works.

    Terrible, Defective Apple Keyboard

    • Written by Luciano M from Swarthmore

The keyboard works intermittently after only a year and a half of use, and is otherwise in mint condition. The quality is unacceptable. I tried to service the product but they don't repair these keyboards.

Genius Bar and Customer Service were totally inefficient. I had to wait for almost an hour to get accurate information.

    Buggy for an Apple product.

    • Written by Kennard Y from Apison

Oddly, this keyboard is weirdly buggy. Out of the blue it stops responding and I must detach then reattach it to my iPad. Likewise, it will get stuck on a key and keep repeating it until I detach then reattach it again. At first I thought it was dirty or worn contacts but the contacts are clean and make a solid connection. I made the mistake of outfitting my whole department with these and more than half report the same issues. This is sad because the form factor is great. They keyboard is light, slim and quiet. When it works, typing is accurate, too. But dang is it buggy. I would use caution if buying it and needing for for real work. Yet again, another Apple product that suffers from the loss of their amazing leader. This seems to be a recurring theme with almost all products. Even a simple keyboard is not safe from lack of attention to detail. Luckily, the few Logitech keyboard that we have swapped out for work very well.
