Was a great keyboard - until iOS 11.xx

I purchased this smart keyboard about 9 months ago, and loved it....particularly because it was easy to use to type in several languages. Then I upgraded my iPad to iOS 11 - and the thing went to heck. It works only intermittently, and sometimes not at all. It has become completely unreliable, which is a shame, because I travel a lot and I loved the fact that here was a keyboard that was easy to type on quickly, and in small spaces, even on an airplane. I loved that the keyboard was part of the cover and the stand. But now - it’s almost useless. I have cleaned the contacts, cleaned the keyboard, rebooted umpteen times, tried chatting with Apple - to no avail. Most things I see online suggest it’s a bug in the updated iOS....so I hope Apple fixes the problem. Until then, I am not sure I would recommend to anyone that they should spend $159 for this thing.

    Doesn't hold up

Started losing connectivity, no abuse, normal use. After a year, Now it now longer works, just an over-priced stand.

Loved my keyboard until it packed up...

Great product but extremely expensive as once the 1 year warranty is over, the keyboard only works intermittently, and sometimes wont work at all.
I have tried all the suggested fixes and the keyboard has not been damaged and has been treated carefully.
My keyboard is just under two year old and with careful use I would expect it to have a much longer life!

    Broken After Six Months

The title says it all. I bought this at the same time as buying my iPad Pro, and the keyboard broke after six months. Was a total waste of money. The iPad wouldn't even detect it anymore. No drops or damage, either - it just up and died on its own, and as I was past the return date, the only thing Apple suggested was that I buy a new one.

Avoid this and go third-party if you really want a keyboard. This one just isn't any good.

    Intermittent connectivity overshadows other features

The product is great when it comes to size (manages a nice balance of being big enough to feel like a full keyboard while also being slim and portable) and comfort (keys are comfortable to the touch and don't feel like I am straining as with other keyboards).

However, the keyboard works only intermittently and I'm constantly having to stop what I'm doing to reconnect it to the iPad. This only gets worse if you're not on a perfectly flat surface (i.e. if you're trying to type away from your desk on you lap or outdoors, etc) Very disappointed with the functionality and connectivity problems of the keyboard. I would not buy this again.

Disregard the other reviews, this is a perfect keyboard!

I spent a lot of time shuffling through reviews to find the best keyboard for my iPad pro and this one works amazingly. A lot of the reviews say that it malfunctions, but I've had mine for months and nothing has happened so I say to disregard those reviews. It's lightweight, portable, AND detachable so you can just easily take it off if you don't want to deal with it. If I had one complaint, it would be that you can only use a specific iPad case with the keyboard. Personally, I would feel more comfortable having my iPad in a drop-proof case like an Otterbox, but it's not that big of a deal. I just carry my iPad in a sleeve.

    Slim low profile

I've owned other keyboard cases in the past with older iPads and they have provided much more comprehensive protection than this smart keyboard does. You definitely need the compatible case to go on the actual iPad. Other than that it words perfectly! It's almost like having my MacBook with me without the bulk. I wish there was an option for a lighted keyboard.

    -works perfectly
    -activates almost instantly when docking.

    -No protection for the iPad
    - when in my work bag the keyboard tends to disconnect from the iPad
    - no lighted keyboard

Rebuttal to all the negative reviews.

I can’t quite understand why the reviews on the 1-3 star ratings consistently mention the lifting of the keyboard from off the surface one might be typing on, I have yet to experience that. Additionally, any lack of connection between the iPad and the Smart Keyboard must have been settled amongst the traversing of updates as neither has had a hint of a problem since making sweet sync love to one another. The button layout is fresher than Bel Airs favorite prince, and folds together as charmingly as his brother is square. I have a MacBook Air to compliment the experience my iPad and iPhone - now exclusive in their relations - euphorically endure on a day to day basis. The true fruit of this keyboard lay in the existence of said MacBook Air...because it has now been relegated to a hub of sorts, where the pad and phone fly, fly, fly like Starbuck and Apollo on yet another of their adventures only to come in for a recharge and info dump.

Look, whether you end up buying it from a deductive standpoint or because you think all things must be brand symmetric doesn’t matter to me, even a little. What does is the creative flow of your heart and mind. As those digits express the language between the two, know that the seamless nature of each expression is manufactured in its most organic and design arousing way, thanks to your new friend: the keyboard. Remember when you wore them new kicks to school? The new car to work? The bonus check and subsequent mall trip? Yeah, this isn’t that, at all, it’s the utility which allowed you to get closer to those prizes with your hard work and focus.

Oh, and it works really well. Did I mention that? I’m a 6’4” thick fingered Viking with the patience of a thin skinned kettle and zero time for technological and electronic shortcomings I don’t comprehend. This has never triggered either.

Functional but doesn't hold up to normal usage

I have had mine for less than a year and the seam that holds the keyboard together has started to separate. It hasn't been dropped, just normal taking it out and putting it back in the briefcase. I tried to get a replacement at the Apple store and they told me it was normal wear and tear and I would have to pay $125 to have it fixed, which is almost the cost of a new one. If Apple thinks the Ipad pro is potential laptop replacement than they will need to come up with a design that holds up.

    Impeccable efficiency.

Great companion for the tablet with uncomplicated protection. Dislike if you would and the greatness will remain.

    Accessory Support Error

There is another review here about the same thing, so I will type it out also. I have seen that many others have had this problem as well. Even some in schools that I have read about somewhere. My keyboard is creating this Accessory not supported error. When the sound is turned on it keeps creating this specific sound like my iPad is being plugged into the charger every time the face of my iPad is covered, and the cover moves even just a smidge. With the great cost of these smart keyboards, fix this problem or no one should buy your products. Because of this I use my Microsoft Surface more.

I would give this one or two stars, but I give three stars because I feel it's a great project to begin with. I LOVED it until this issue that has begun after only having this thing a year.

Fails too often & not worth the money

Sadly, this product fails all too often (three times during the writing of this review alone).

Before I go on with the negatives I must acknowledge that it does work on some occasions and certainly when it does work it does exactly what it is supposed to do. On that point, the keyboard is reponsive and pleasant enough to type upon. I also appreciate how compact it is (I use the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement when in Court).

However, this accessory rarely works. I am unaware if the fault lies with the keyboard itself or the connector.

Regardless, my advice to those considering purchasing is to heed the advice of the others who reviewed this product poorly (something I did not do and regret). Simply put, you are spending money on an accessory which, at best, works some of the time.

Finally, although I have been complementary of the product when it works I cannot for the life of me see how the cost is justified. There is no feature or function within this product that elevates it to warrant the price tag attached.

    Ultimately to be avoided.

    I really love this keyboard

After reading a ton of so/so reviews of this keyboard, I just didn’t find another I was in love with. There are several online that may be less expensive, but really, they feel clunky, and the keys are just too close for my liking. I have yet to find a keyboard I have actually used with any of my ipad’s. After purchasing an iPad Pro, i dove in a purchased this Smart Keyboard. It looks amazing. It doesn’t add too much weight or thickness to the iPad, and is very easy to type on. I wish I was able to type on my lap without a hard surface, but this keyboard just does not have the structure to sit on your lap alone. It is not a deal breaker at all. Just wish it was different. I also did not like the lack of protection for the back of the iPad, but i was able to find a cheap and nice looking cover to address this, so again, not a deal breaker for me. In fact, I like that it doesn’t look like ONE piece around the iPad. Overall, I wish I would have grabbed an iPad Pro earlier, and am very happy with the Smart Keyboard. Love it.

    Feels uncharacteristically cheap.

Upside: the learning curve is not as steep as I’d imagined, and it does complement the functionality of the iPad quite well.
Downsides: No escape key. Not all apps respond to the keyboard (e.g. Netflix). No backlit keys. The worse offender: the fugly cheap coating. It’s baffling to see Microsoft create such amazing keyboards for their Surface line while Apple’s feel like a knockoff picked out from a back alley basket sale.

    Best accessory

I’ve now had this for 4 months. I am using my iPad so much more than I did previously, because I have a keyboard that does NOT require recharging and on which touch-typing is easy. As yet, I’ve had no connection problems mentioned by other users, and there is absolutely no problem with changing orientation. It is true that there is no back cover on it, and I have forked out almost $100 for one... but I still feel it is worth it, and it was something I knew when I made the purchase. Thus far, this is a great piece of equipment for me.

Spotted it on display at COSCTO, and I figured that since it came from Apple, I just had to have it. Bad decision. Was first of all very disappointed that the keys are not backlit. Or did I miss something. How come so many third-party keyboards come with backlighting? Secondly, no back protection. It's bad enough that Apple won't include at a minimum a simple vinyl cover for basic protection with the original iPad, instead you expect us to pay $30 to $100 plus for a decent cover. Finally, I buy this combination keyboard/cover and there's no back protection! Returning it today. Steve Jobs is looking down on you from above and he's not happy.

    Does not last

Does not last! We bought this product about a year ago not sure if it was the hot weather on the holiday but on the hinge side where it attached to the iPad it lost all its shape and I will not stay on properly, pretty useless after one year, waste of money.

    Poor execution

The back isn't protected and it's flimsy. The logitech is also horrible and these are the only two on the market that uses the smart connector. Too bad that I bought the Ipad pro 10.5 The 9.7 has more accessories and the extra 0.7" doesn't matter. This will be my last Apple purchase. Your creativity and design died when Steve Jobs passed away. Apple is no longer the same company and it's sad.

    Teribble products

It doesn’t even protect the back of the iPad which makes it a bad case but it also relys on magnets to stay attached to the iPad but in my case the magnets on one the bottom stopped working so it wouldn’t even really protect the front since it keeps falling off but if you just want a keyboard it works as one thats about it though
