      Nice Enterprise solution, but VERY LOUD

      We purchased this unit for our photography and video studio. The unit is a deal, easily $1,000 less than similar offerings from G-Technology and Promise. The Bl We purchased this unit for our photography and video studio. The unit is a deal, easily $1,000 less than similar offerings from G-Technology and Promise. The Blackmagic Disk Speed Test results showed the unit achieving Read and Write speeds above 450MB/s. The unit is quite long, and you will definitely need a server class rack to store it. Be sure to check the dimensions and verify that it will fit for your application. Unfortunately, we had to return our unit and opt for another much more expensive solution due to the incredibly loud fan noise. The unit has three internal (and easily replaceable) fans, and there is a fan inside each of the two independent power supplies. Combined, they produce 50-69dB of noise, which is FAR too loud for a production environment. If you need to place this unit in close proximity to workers, it is simply too loud. It would work fine in an isolated server room, but then you'll end up paying a high premium on long Thunderbolt cable runs. This unit is as loud as a normal conversation, or a home dishwasher, and that noise appears to happen all of the time, especially more so when the drive is being hammered. As a side note, the unit we received had a marred front panel and the Thunderbolt plate in the back was not actually attached to the frame. Lucie immediately offered to replace the unit due to those flaws, but we opted to return it due to the ultimately unbearable fan noise. Too bad that such a promising product was unable to meet our needs.

They have also recently changed their website, all previous product registrations and support tickets are no longer available - good way to clear the backlog of issues. Support is generally no help. They have no ETA on El Capitan Drivers/Raid Manager and the current downloads (on their new website) no longer even list the version number or date posted for what is being download. It is a guessing game. What a joke. Hardware is solid enough, but selling it as the class of drive that it is marketed as, needs better support system.

      Administration console doesn't work on the Mac Server.       Fast, reliable and affordable for pro work

      I've been running the 24TB 8big Rack on a daily basis for over five months in my commercial vfx and finishing studio as direct attached storage serving applica I've been running the 24TB 8big Rack on a daily basis for over five months in my commercial vfx and finishing studio as direct attached storage serving applications requiring high volume data throughout; such as Flame, Maya and Resolve. The unit is louder than most direct raids because it takes more power to cool 8-drives and redundant supplies, psu, etc. vs prosumer, 4-6 drive competitors - so ideal buyers prefer reliability and performance over loudness. With that said, it's not much louder than my Promise R6 raids after a few hours of use. The documentation is sparse, it's hard to rackmount (but easy on a rack tray) and LaCie's online troubleshooting is poor. Yet the product performs so well at the price that these can't knock my review down a star. Users complaining about El Capitan or Yosemite are erroneously blaming a well-documented OS raid issue on this product. Apple fixed it in Sierra, which you should use with this product. I regularly get sustained rates at or higher than LaCie's average specs, even with disk caching off - which I recommend to protect your parity data. I've owned a few Promise Pegasus raids and, among the five brands of direct attached and two brands of network attached storage I've owned, they are the least reliable and most expensive per terabyte. Many of my colleagues had similar experiences. Must say I'm shocked how good the 8big rack is amidst experiences with their consumer and prosumer external drives. Good job on this one, now make the next gen easier to mount with better documentation!

Everything in the server room comes back on automatically, except the 8big Rack, which apparently (according to LaCie support, has no option for auto power on after power failure. Every time there's a big storm, and the power is off for more than an hour, someone has to physically go into the office to turn this thing on, else no one can do their time machine backups. It's a complete PITA. I can't believe they missed such a basic feature.
