It must be connected directly to the computer. That leaves one other USB port which is taken up by the Belkin Hub. I am using the hub to connect a Fitbit dongle and a Seagate Plus external drive (Time Machine). Each of these phases in and out of connectivity and requires to be unplugged and reinserted into the hub every couple of days.

Now I will have to rush out to get another if I can find one. Hhhhh. Seriously apple. I would expect that you had a branded USB hub for multiple inputs....Sad. Just sad. For $60? This product already feels cheap to the hands and the power supply is not that great. Belkin! I deserve another one and this item should be cheaper. This item is apart of the Full Sail University LaunchBox for Audio Production. You all need to sell stuff that works. Not items that make setting up more difficult for students...

Considering one has to plug it into the wall to get it to support more than one external drive and one has to completely bypass this thing if one wants one's computer to charge anything substantial, one should shop for something else. Hey Belkin, get it together.
