Terrific Display; Slight Downgrade From 5K iMac

I went to the Apple Store nearest me and bought it before the floor employees even knew it was in stock. My initial usage wasn’t without problems. The monitor would resist my entreaties to turn on when I woke up the MacBook Pro. I went to the local Best Buy and spent $39 for an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable to replace the stock LG cable. The new cable solved the problem about 90% of the time, but the monitor still refuses to wake up once a week or so. I have to unplug the cable and plug it back in. The LG monitor maintenance app is laughable; if I wait until the app tells me to update the firmware, I’ll never get beyond the version that shipped with the display. The 24” display is a slight downgrade from my 5K iMac, but the desk real estate I’ve gained back is significant. The display itself is gorgeous, even if the stand is blocky. And since I’ve switched to USB-C for all my peripherals, I welcome the ports. I’ve concluded that I should spend the extra money to buy another display and run them side-by-side rather than buy a TB3 hub.

      Worth the wait

I I have been using an Apple LED Cinema Display (24") with my 2008 Mac Pro, and it's replacement, a 2018 Mac Mini. Needless to say, I was due for a new monitor. I was holding out for a new Apple monitor that I hoped would show up at WWDC 2019, but not only is the new Apple monitor outside of any rational home budget, it's much too large for my home workspace. This is about as plain as monitors get, but the panel itself is gorgeous, the setup seamless with the Mac Mini and the speakers sound surprisingly good. The first gen LG monitors had issues, they updated the 27" version to fix those if Amazon reviews are to be believed, but why pay 2X for marginally more real estate. And the 20" LG, now discontinued was too small. The Mac Mini + LG Ultrafine 24" is the iMac 24" we've never had. BTW, if I was still working (I'm retired), I would love this monitor with a MacBook on my office desk. The monitor comes with the cable needed for the Mac Mini 2018 or latest MacBook Pro. It also includes a VESA mount adapter. And a stand :).

The Screen Manager software doesn't support screen split or monitor control and it doesn't come back to life after I put it in to sleep mode - I either have to open and close the lid of my MacBook or unplug the monitor. I've tried both USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 cables for connectivity. I purchased this monitor as I thought it would 'just work' as Apple products do. It feels very third party, which I understand it is, but unless these issues are fixed in the next fortnight, i.e. my return period, I'll be sending it back. It looks beautiful, but it's disappointing. I would rather keep the monitor as aesthetically it looks nice, the screen is beautiful and it charges my MacBook Pro 15", but if it can't work as it's supposed to, the frustration kills creativity.

I run it at 3840X2160 with 32GB of memory in the Mini and the display is crisp with no noticeable lag. The 3840X2160 resolution seems perfect for this size monitor. The sweet spot for UI size and plenty of screen real estate. I tweaked a few preferences including Finder view options and everything is very readable even for my old eyes. Great color, very bright, speakers sound good, and all the ports on the back are nice. I’m a retired graphic designer who still does some design work. I find the display attractive and actually like the thin black bezel. I work in Affinity Design, Affinity Photo and MacOS Photos primarily and this monitor is perfect with those apps.

It's that easy. It's integtated in a way third party montors usually are not. Very smooth. Ideal for a MacBook Pro when you need to do work requiring a slightly larger screen. Sits well with a MacBook - you probbaly will keep it open and use both screens. Get a stand that allows the MacBook to be fully open and at eye height. It's evidently a panel of like quality Apple use. So far can't complain and the USBC hub is a nice extra.

One major drawback is that even if it claims to have an 85W power supply and the power icon in the status bar does always show charging sign. However, if the built-in display and the external display are both in-use, the battery level is dropping continuously. In this case, you still need to plug in the power cable.
