can i use this for a 2012 mac pro, i will be upgrading to the new macbook as well
I have a 2012 mac pro that I am upgrading but I first need to back up everything on an external drive, I want this one because it marched the new mac book but will the connectors work on the mac pro 2012

Yes. The drive comes with two cables. The second cable will allow the drive to connect to your older MacBook Pro using the traditional USB 2.0 or 3.0 interface.

Your Macbook Pro should have a USB-A connector. This drive includes a "backwards compatible" cable. You should be able to backup your 2012 Mac then transfer the data to a new Mac. I don't know the exact specs of a 2012. Be sure you have a USB connector. Hope this helps.
