my car stereo has the 30pin plug for my ipod but i purchased a new iphone 5 will the adapter allow me to play music with my old cord?

My car has the same old 30pin plug for my iPod. I bought this adapter as well and whilst it did work for playing music, i found that it didn't charge the phone.
So then I had to go and buy a belkin-lightning-audio-charge-rockstar (you can buy from Apple Store) as well.
