Terrible Insulation Material, Frays in Just a Year

I absolutely HATE the material Apple uses for their power cables' insulation. Why do they feel the need to use such a soft and easily ripped rubber? How about something that will actually last as long as the computer? Why can't the MagSafe cable itself be detachable from the power brick just like the AC-side extension cord? Maybe then I wouldn't have to spend $100 every year replacing the entire thing. But then that'd cut into Apple's profits, just like why they ditched the iPhone's microphone jack and all the useful ports on the MacBook Pro in favor of dongles.

It's not like my computer gets subjected to a lot of wear and tear, it just sits in my bedroom. How a power cord self-destructs like that under such low stress conditions I have no idea other than Apple designing them to fail.

MagSafe connector failed - just before a big meeting

These things are the worst. Seriously deficient for a company of Apple's reputation. Shameful that they do not recall/replace these. My laptop literally stopped charging just one day. About two hours before a big presentation, I was out of town, nowhere near a store to replace this. Luckily a guest in the hotel had one and lent it to me. Kind soul. Otherwise I would have been SoL! Apple, get your $hi# together on this. Will seriously consider a windows machine next time.

Tired of buying expensive cables that works as well as a potato battery.

While I love my mac, this is absolutely the worst charger. Clearly designed to break and to force people to buy new ones every couple of years. This will be the 3rd charger in a few years, and has reached a point were it melted the outer cable and started to smoke. I have always loved apple products, but sadly the decline in workmanship and cheap money making tricks means that this will most certainly be the last apple product I purchase. If i could give 0 stars i would.

    Inconvenient and flimsy

Had two charges brake, each lasting less than two years.

    - Having the transformer be directly part of the plug means that it is sometimes impossible to plug it in to sockets that are low to the ground.
    - The cable shielding on both ends begins to deform and peels away within a year.
    - The cable pegs that pop out are very delicate and snap off without much encouragement.

    The price tag is obscene.

    4 DAYS OF USE!!!!

I got this computer and used to for 3 charging cycles before it literally quit working. The LED light doesn't come on and it will not charge my computer, or anyone else's apple computer I have tried it on. This is asinine!

    Another Unhappy Customer

It's been fine for 4 1/2 years. Went to charge rMBP and nope, not working. I would not have thought too much about it but seeing all the bad reviews it looks like it is a common problem. Plus, $85! Failure should not be this common for an $85 charger. I know I've taken good care of mine. But still failed.

    They Keep Shorting Out

I have a 2015 Retina Macbook Pro. I love my Mac but I hate this charger. This is the second time I've had to buy a new charger. This time the charger popped and blew a circuit breaker. It was plugged into a power outlet and charging my laptop. I heard a pop, the lights went out, I smelled a whiff of smoke and immediately unplugged it. It doesn't charge anymore and the LED in the Magsafe2 part doesn't light up. The first charger did something similar about THREE MONTHS after I bought my MacBook Pro. As a longtime Apple fanboy, it's very disappointing to have to keep buying new chargers for my Mac.

    Waste of Money

These chargers are terribly made, I have had to replace mine twice since buying my laptop in 2015. I am extremely careful and they still fall apart. $79 is way too much for a charger that seems designed to break. I won't be buying a MacBook next time I need a new laptop solely because of the charging cords. I wish I could give this product zero stars.

    Poor quality product

Besides occasional travels, my MagSafe 2 power adapter had been sitting in my office for the past couple years. The adapter stopped working this morning, even though (i) the device had no signs of damage and (ii) the wire did not have any strains. When I explained my situation to a sales representative at my local store, she simply told me that Apple warranty lasts only 1 year and that this adapter should not break as long as it is "treated nicely."

I agree with other reviews here that this adapter is designed quite poorly. I am not sure what else I could have done to treat this adapter any nicer, if sitting in an office is enough to make this product stop functioning.

    Getting really hot

I use my Mac everyday and I have issues with the PowerBox which is getting extremely hot. The cable is also now deteriorated and the bare wires are exposed. It isn't safe and really expensive to purchase. Really disappointed.

Cord unable to handle computer use while charging.

I had this charger for 2 1/2 years. One thing I observed about the cord is while the computer was in use and plugged in, the cord would overheat, and slowly deteriorate. I would expect the cord to last longer under normal use, but there should also be a way to account for when the computer is in use while charging.

    Disposable

I'd expect the charger that comes with a 2.5k laptop to last much much longer considering how careful I am with my tech.
This thing is so overpriced and unreliable, particularly the wire.
Another product that's pretty but requires frequent replacement. Classic Apple.

    Very poor quality, short life-span

In the case of this power adaptor, you are better off buying a cheap, dodgy knock-off version on ebay. It will probably last longer!!!!! It's the third replacement in less than five years, which is very frustrating because I really try to look after my stuff. The issues I've faced are tearing of the cable, massive overheating and dangerously exposed wires.

I've been an Apple user since 1996. Always swore by their products, (particularly the performance and build quality) even though they were always massively overpriced and often forced you to use non-standard connections for power and other connectivity. By the mid-to-late 2000's I noticed a huge decline in their products and this charger is most likely the last product I will purchase from Apple.

Can't trust this power adapter, sometimes it won't charge and soon one day it will die!

    Strange!

I have read the reviews and I am astonished. The charger I brought is perfect has a good quality feel about it and I have encountered zero issues.

    POWER FAILURE!!!!

I'm astonished that my power adapter has just blown after such low usage. I replaced the fuse twice to no avail. Now after seeing all of these negative reviews I feel that even a new £70 adapter won't last. Come on Apple if you can build reliable computers surely a reliable power adapter has to be a breeze. This is the first time I've had a power adapter fail on me, even cheap ones from other devices have outlasted this supposed quality product.

    Not good.

I can pretty much echo most of the reviews on this product. It gets hot and the end is fraying. Yes i will need to replace it as I use the computer in a work place and the cable will not pass the electrical safety test (PAT)

    Unreasonably poor quality chargers

A simple review in line with all others - why, when you manufacture such amazing products, would you create such a fantastically sub par product to go with it? The build and material quality on the cables is absolutely dreadful. The mark up on made on a £79.00 charger must be ludicrous and if it's not, I seriously question your choice of inputs - if indeed your supplier is charging you anything more that pennies for the materials you're getting taken for a ride Apple. Please, for the love of quality, sort out your chargers.

    3rd one so far

The quality of the wire and it's casing is so bad that I had to replace it for the 3rd time. The first one I had almost caught on fire when I left it plugged in overnight. Luckily I woke up from the burning smell. To be fair I just ordered the 3rd one before my current charger gets too damaged (It still works but casing of the wires is broken and in some places you can see the wires inside), to avoid any house burn down.
The choice is this or a knock off version unfortunately.
For an expensive brand, sure this product is a great disappointment.
