    Do Not Recommend

    • Written by Connor L from Wolverhampton

I have been through three USB superdrive units. When converting CDs to add them to my iTunes library, it would randomly spit out the CD and fail to read it (even discs with no marks or blemishes) then cause iTunes to crash. At first I thought it was my install of macOS and iTunes, so I did a full system reinstall, but the issue prevailed again after a few minutes of use. So it seems that not are there only software issues, it also damages discs by leaving a scratch near the centre hole, so be careful if you do buy this.

I've now moved to an alternative brand external disc drive which is working perfectly and reading all discs.

Unfortunately this product is very much 'form over function' - it looks great but it doesn't perform up to the users requirements.

    Final verdict: do not purchase

    Another one bites the dust.

    • Written by Michael M from SAN MARINO

    One Apple Hard Drive died.

    2 Time Capsules died.

1 iMac 27" fusion drive died.

    None of them recoverable.

    The SuperDrive.

Used a few times, always put it back in the box after use so that dust would not find its way in. And still, it died with absolute minimal use. Truly disgusted with the lack of quality from Tim Cook's version of Apple.

Now I need to find another vendor that I can rely on with regards to a CD/ DVD drive, sorry, still have tons of storage on old discs, not like Tim Cook says begone SuperDrive and all my data is accessible elsewhere.

    Total waste of money

    • Written by carl H from Wrexham

Just bought new MacBook Pro, got the SuperDrive, all it did was just ejecting discs, I tried copying cds to iTunes and the drive would stop before completing, happened every-time I tried, I expected more from Apple. Don’t buy this product, you are just paying for the name no value or reasonable functionality from this product, shameful that Apple haven’t addressed the issues raised.

    Works for me!

    • Written by Rebecca D from Liverpool

I replaced my 2007 iMac with a 2017 - no built-in drive so I purchased the Superdrive. I plugged in the USB and inserted my music disc. It loaded up immediately and played beautifully. When I was finished, I clicked the eject icon on the screen in iTunes and it popped right out. Each time I've used it, this is exactly what happens. Perfect! I'm glad I didn't heed the bad reviews and gave it a shot.

I imported more 7,000 CDs into iTunes with my SuperDrive before it started having read errors. Over the years it was always fast and looked great next to my MacBook Pro!

    • Written by Jose C from Zurich

Just bought the superdrive, and simply does not work, it keeps doing noise, trying to read and does not do anything at all. very disappointing for an Apple product that should be compatible. Now what do I do with this junk?

Prime example of NOT getting what you paid for . DO NOT BUY.

    • Written by andrea W from Mississauga

Traded to a new MacBook Pro Retina three years ago and bought the USB drive because...I was used to having one in my old Mac. Realized very quickly that I really did not need it. Drive lived quietly in its box, came out maybe 3-4 times.and went back into happy hibernation. Pulled it out of the box last week to read a medical CD. NOTHING. DUD. The Mac does not see it. When you plug it in, there is a very short interrupted hiccup and nothing. It will not take a CD. Useless paperweight. Just checked on line pricing for similar units - in the $35 range vs Apple's $95. Anyone who thinks they are getting regular Apple quality (along with the not insignificant cost) should revise their judgement and buy something generic that might actually work at a third of the price.I wish I could give this a no star rating.

    Works Perfectly

    • Written by Michael W from Kansas City

I will admit that I was a little skeptical when I read the reviews on this product. But for less that $80.00 I felt that I could always return it if it didn't meet my expectations.

Since first plugging it in it has worked perfectly. I have tried all functions with no problems at all. I especially like that fact that when you eject a disc it is ejected out enough that you never have to put our fingers on the the surface of the disc to get ahold of it and pull it completely out.

It is easily transportable and certainly does't take up much space.

    Very happy with my purchase.

    Cheap piece of junk

    • Written by Judy L from San Diego

I have multiple Apple devices that I love dearly, but this external drive is unworthy of the Apple name. There are no external controls, such as an eject button. My DVDs get stuck in this thing and it can literally take hours of pressing eject on the DVD software controls and hoping that it will eventually come out. I've tested them in other machines to rule out disk issues, and the problem is definitely not my disks! One of these units died after only 16 months so I foolishly bought another and it's just as bad. For nearly $80 I expect a better piece of equipment. Apple, you should be ashamed of yourself for putting your name on this. I absolutely will not buy any more of these pieces of garbage!

    Not a tech dummy

    • Written by Dewayne C from NASHUA

I can see most of the reviews here are coming from people not familiar with tech. I'll make this short and sweet. I haven't purchased this drive but I am leaning more likely towards getting this drive. Most of the reviews here it seems are stemming from people's lack of understanding how Macs and tech ACTUALLY WORKS.

The reason why the drive has no eject button is most likely because if you look on the Mac desktop you will see an icon for the drive. If you right-click with the Magic Mouse you will then see a contextual menu appear. Now here's where it gets complicated. Then drag the arrow of the Magic Mouse down the a title on the menu that says, "EJECT DISC." I know that's a radical concept. You can also open the icon of the hard-drive icon that says, "Macintosh HD" and you will also see off to the left listed in the window pane a list of folders and various other icons, including the Macintosh Icon and the name of any other portable devices you have attached.

Bottom line. If you don't know enough about the tech you are using, then it is no one else's fault but your own. DO NOT go on a website for the company and rage against the machine because you are stuck in the Bronze Age. If you bought Apple products just because you want to come off looking "trendy" and you want to seem awesome for throwing a lot of money away, then you bought them for the wrong reason. All you did was come off looking like a stupid tool. That fact was only reinforced by your stupid reviews where you whined and cried like a child where you all but admitted you didn't know how to use your Mac.

I know how to use Macs and have since I was fourteen. I know how to use Windows based pcs and have for years. I have been using tech since I was seven years old. I know how to custom build computers better and far less than what Best Buy gouges the sheeple for and make them work.

I take that back. After reading these crybaby complaints. I DEFINITELY WILL be purchasing this drive. If I could post a picture, then I'd post of myself using this drive with a smile on my face.

    • Written by Ron A from St. Albert

I have purchased this with my new Macbook Pro. The drive is terrible. I have talked to apple help twice and spent 2.5 hours with them and still it does not work but rejects the discs. I don't usually complain or write a bad review but this is outrageous.

    • Written by Owen G from Ocean Shores

NO PROBLEMS FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS THEN IT TRIED TO PLAY NO MATTER THE SETTINGS. THE DISC WOULDN'T EJECT BECAUSE THE COMPUTER WOULD HAVE A BOX COME UP STATING IT WAS IN USE. CATCH 22 OR SOMETHING. BUT IT DID LAST FOUR YEARS. APPLE - FIX THE BASIC STUFF BEFORE YOU GO ON TO THE NEXT BIG THING.

    Realistic expectations

    • Written by Duncan M from Hamden

Used a lot of these drives over the years. They're no less reliable than any other slot loader, in my experience. I have had issues in the past when drives would need to be periodically disconnected and reconnected to a different USB port, but that hasn't happened in years now. I've dropped one a few times and never had any problems from it. They can burn out after a couple of years, they are, after all, mechanical devices and moving parts wear out, but I feel they've been more durable than other drives I've owned. Don't really kniow what all the hate is about in the other reviews. Knee-jerk reactions I guess.

Do not waste your money & time & grief!

    • Written by Gabrielle S from Carrollton

I am so disappointed in Apple for selling me this CD/DVD reader that doesn't work, nor do they don't stand behind it. Not only have I wasted the full price of $80 plus tax, but I've wasted so much time trying to make it work w/Apple's help too. I also now have to figure out a way to get the disk out of the reader. The disk has photos that are not on any other device. So I'm going to have to break it open somehow and I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and that can end up hurting my hands and wrists. I really wish I didn't have to resort to bad-mouthing the product and all here. But the warranty was no help and this is clearly a manufacturing defect. I think Apple is making enough profit to do better...This is a clear failure in customer service. Just look at all the bad reviews of this product. I'm sure the few good ones are written when they first got this item. It worked for the first two times. Apple, shame on you for selling this. I wish I never bought it. I only gave a star because I had to.

    Usb Superdrive

    • Written by Jesse K from hanford

After all the awful reviews I decided to not buy this item. I expected it not to work! But I gotta gift card and decided to take my chances. Mine works fine. I haven't burned any cds or dvd yet. It didn't play the first two movies I put in but now it works great. It is worth it if you have a lot of dvds and cds. With a newer Mac its probably better. Theres no eject button that's my only problem , but there are several ways of doing that.
