    Patience is a Virtue

    • Written by Lee A from Yeadon

Because of the less-than-stellar reviews, I was wary about buying Apple's USB SuperDrive. But I own an iMac desktop, MacBook Pro laptop, iPhone 6, and several iPads and iPods. What other external drive would I buy?

I had the same issue as many of the reviewers. The first disc I tried to insert, tax software, immediately popped back out. I tried a music CD and had the same result. I called Apple tech support and the problem was solved by shutting down, unplugging the power cord for 15 seconds, plugging the power cord back in and restarting. After that procedure, I successfully installed the tax software without issue, and I'm listening to a music CD as I write this review.

I have always been a Mac person and while I'm disappointed a problem exists, I'm happy the problem was so easily solved. There is a definitely an issue with the drive that deserves a look from the engineers and designers, so I cannot give a 5-star rating. So far, it's working as expected, so I feel a 4-star rating is fair.

    It runs through ITunes

    • Written by Andrew P from Glen Ridge

You don't get an icon of the drive on the desktop. Put in the blank CD. CD shows up. But to burn to it the files need to be in ITunes. Drag 'em into a playlist and burn the playlist as per the prompt. It works. I had one several years ago and threw it away in disgust because it looked like the Macbook didn't read it. No icon. I'm sure many have been fooled by the lack of visibility when the drive is first plugged in, and that probably could be improved upon. Not too intuitive. To eject the CD, drag the desktop CD icon into the trash. Presto.

    So Far So Good...

    • Written by LaToya M from Moraine

I admit I was VERY hesitant to purchase this SuperDrive because of reviews left by other customers. I have a MacBook Air 11 inch refurbished that was given to me as a gift over Christmas so I could download my Creative Suite software. But of course my Mac Air does not have a disc drive which is the main reason I bought this. However, unlike many others here, I purchased my SuperDrive through my employer with a 3rd party. When it arrived it looked like it was shipped directly from Apple, brand new wrapping/packaging undisturbed. I've had the SuperDrive for about month now and I don't use it much. I'm happy to report I downloaded my Creative Suite successfully and I was able to burn an audio disc for my car (I don't have an interest in burning any DVDs because I use streaming services). I don't find it to be too noisy or too slow, so far I am pleased. Again, I've only used it a few times. I do wish there was an eject button on the actual device, I'm concerned about it getting stuck since I've seen others have that issue *knocks on wood*. If anything changes, I will definitely be back with an update, hope this review helps.

    Works Well. No Problems Here.

    • Written by Ivelys V from Spring

I received a CD with files on it that I needed to review for work, so I went out and got the USB Superdrive. I saw that it did not have the best reviews, but for me it works just fine. Of course, all I really use it for is to review files. I eject the CD when Im done and I also disconnect it when I am not using it. There are much cheaper options out there, but I wanted to stick with Apple. I give it 4 stars because I think that by now the price on these should be no more than maybe $50.00

    Connectivity to MacAir

    • Written by Max T from Auckland

I used a USB C adapter that had 3 ports (USB / HDMI / lightning) and the SuperDrive stayed dead.
I switched to a connecter that had just USB C to USB and it all worked fine.

    Happy

    • Written by Kassidy K from Sinking Spring

After reading the reviews, I was really scared about using this. It works simple and easy for me. I haven't had any problems. The only downside is it won't let me Airplay the movie to my Apple TV.

    Apple SuperDrive

    • Written by Brian U from El Dorado Hills

I was a little leery after all the negative reviews but found the drive performed well. An eject button should be added to rate it five stars. The drive did fail to eject discs when the keyboard command was used on several occasions, but the HELP instructions to restart and hold the mouse button down always ejected the disc during startup.Apple should work on getting the EJECT function to work on command.

    Things are odd

    • Written by Glenn T from Lake Jackson

I have had this drive for almost 4 years and have had no problems with it on my iMac. My son just used it with no problems on his brand new Macbook Pro.
That being said, I also agree with those who have expressed concern regarding the lack of a good old fashioned disk ejection mechanism.
Also, it sure seems like QA/QC at the factory where these devices are made is suspect. There are far too many reports about brand new or seldom used SuperDrives failing to work.

Further it's time for the design team to upgrade the USB system; unless of course, the drive can't deliver at USB- B or C speeds?

    LASTED ABOUT FOUR YEARS

    • Written by Owen G from Ocean Shores

NO PROBLEMS FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS THEN IT TRIED TO PLAY NO MATTER THE SETTINGS. THE DISC WOULDN'T EJECT BECAUSE THE COMPUTER WOULD HAVE A BOX COME UP STATING IT WAS IN USE. CATCH 22 OR SOMETHING. BUT IT DID LAST FOUR YEARS. APPLE - FIX THE BASIC STUFF BEFORE YOU GO ON TO THE NEXT BIG THING.

    Great product but over priced

    • Written by Ramon M from Senglea

Great product. I use it occasionally for the limited number of times that a CD or DVD is required nowadays. It is overpriced, as it is just another cd/dvd reader/writer but with a flashy Apple look.

    Works Perfectly

    • Written by Michael W from Kansas City

I will admit that I was a little skeptical when I read the reviews on this product. But for less that $80.00 I felt that I could always return it if it didn't meet my expectations.

Since first plugging it in it has worked perfectly. I have tried all functions with no problems at all. I especially like that fact that when you eject a disc it is ejected out enough that you never have to put our fingers on the the surface of the disc to get ahold of it and pull it completely out.

It is easily transportable and certainly does't take up much space.

    Very happy with my purchase.

    Good Dependable Drive

    • Written by FRANK D from Ballwin

I've had an Apple SuperDrive for four years now and have never had an issue with it. I do wish it were a bit faster but seems to perform consistent with other drives I've used. And I like the look and small size.

    Works for me

    • Written by paul B from Tallahassee

I'm an audio snob so I still buy cds. The superdrive has worked for me going on 5 years and has always performed. I've transferred literally 1000s of discs to my hard drive (doing that right now in fact) and never had an issue. I'd give it 5 stars if it had an eject button on the device, but that's not a huge deal. Not sure why so many have rated this thing so poorly.

    Quite nice and 'just works'!,

    • Written by Tristan T from RICHMOND

While the build quality of this does seem a bit cheapy, I actually really like this. Like it or not, discs are getting less and less popular as time goes on. But if you need something to get your CDs into your Mac, this works great. I can also burn CDs and DVDs with it too. Yet, it puts away in a drawer when not in use making my desk less cluttered. This is also quite light and portable too so you can even take it with you places to use with your Macbook Air.

I have the 27" 5K Retina late 2015 iMac, which is a really nice thin design. I wouldn't want it thicker just to have an occasionally used disc slot.

    Usb Superdrive

    • Written by Jesse K from hanford

After all the awful reviews I decided to not buy this item. I expected it not to work! But I gotta gift card and decided to take my chances. Mine works fine. I haven't burned any cds or dvd yet. It didn't play the first two movies I put in but now it works great. It is worth it if you have a lot of dvds and cds. With a newer Mac its probably better. Theres no eject button that's my only problem , but there are several ways of doing that.

    Perfect Companion

    • Written by Ryan C

The PERFECT partner for my Macbook Air and I. Thought I wouldn't really need one considering most things are available as downloads but spoke too soon, needed one in the end. The drive is so compact and portable I take it anywhere I take my laptop.

    USB SuperDrive

    • Written by Charles M from Munster

Not sure why there are so many bad reviews. But I just got mine today, plugged into my MacBook Pro 2018 via a USB to USB-C adapter and immediately burned a DVD. The drive correctly ejected the disc, no issues. We use discs to share photos with family who are not fluent in more modern ways to share files. Would give it 5 stars, but I think it is kinda pricey.

    Works well for me!

    • Written by Tom K from San Rafael

I'm not certain why all the hate toward the Apple Superdrive; it works well for me! If you insert a CD it does, indeed, recognize the song and artist. The drive is fast, quiet and does what it needs to as far as CD and DVD importing and burning. I don't do fancy program, software stuff as that's not why I got the drive for my MacBook Air. I was tired of using my old HP with Microsoft simply to import movies and songs to my Mac. So the Apple Superdrive was the answer. It is pricy at $79 and I think Apple would do well for its consumers to sell it at $59. But if you want and need an external drive--get it.

    Realistic expectations

    • Written by Duncan M from Hamden

Used a lot of these drives over the years. They're no less reliable than any other slot loader, in my experience. I have had issues in the past when drives would need to be periodically disconnected and reconnected to a different USB port, but that hasn't happened in years now. I've dropped one a few times and never had any problems from it. They can burn out after a couple of years, they are, after all, mechanical devices and moving parts wear out, but I feel they've been more durable than other drives I've owned. Don't really kniow what all the hate is about in the other reviews. Knee-jerk reactions I guess.
