    Quite nice and 'just works'!,

    • Written by Tristan T from RICHMOND

While the build quality of this does seem a bit cheapy, I actually really like this. Like it or not, discs are getting less and less popular as time goes on. But if you need something to get your CDs into your Mac, this works great. I can also burn CDs and DVDs with it too. Yet, it puts away in a drawer when not in use making my desk less cluttered. This is also quite light and portable too so you can even take it with you places to use with your Macbook Air.

I have the 27" 5K Retina late 2015 iMac, which is a really nice thin design. I wouldn't want it thicker just to have an occasionally used disc slot.

    Usb Superdrive

    • Written by Jesse K from hanford

After all the awful reviews I decided to not buy this item. I expected it not to work! But I gotta gift card and decided to take my chances. Mine works fine. I haven't burned any cds or dvd yet. It didn't play the first two movies I put in but now it works great. It is worth it if you have a lot of dvds and cds. With a newer Mac its probably better. Theres no eject button that's my only problem , but there are several ways of doing that.

    Perfect Companion

    • Written by Ryan C

The PERFECT partner for my Macbook Air and I. Thought I wouldn't really need one considering most things are available as downloads but spoke too soon, needed one in the end. The drive is so compact and portable I take it anywhere I take my laptop.

    USB SuperDrive

    • Written by Charles M from Munster

Not sure why there are so many bad reviews. But I just got mine today, plugged into my MacBook Pro 2018 via a USB to USB-C adapter and immediately burned a DVD. The drive correctly ejected the disc, no issues. We use discs to share photos with family who are not fluent in more modern ways to share files. Would give it 5 stars, but I think it is kinda pricey.

    Works well for me!

    • Written by Tom K from San Rafael

I'm not certain why all the hate toward the Apple Superdrive; it works well for me! If you insert a CD it does, indeed, recognize the song and artist. The drive is fast, quiet and does what it needs to as far as CD and DVD importing and burning. I don't do fancy program, software stuff as that's not why I got the drive for my MacBook Air. I was tired of using my old HP with Microsoft simply to import movies and songs to my Mac. So the Apple Superdrive was the answer. It is pricy at $79 and I think Apple would do well for its consumers to sell it at $59. But if you want and need an external drive--get it.

catch 22 with this product, since it draws a lot of power

    • Written by Elliot Einzig P from Berkeley

it has to be plugged directly into USB on body of airbooks, will not work off of usb , which is a drag since digitized audio files cannot be saved to an external drive

correct me if I am wrong, but I see no way around this
wish it worked with a hub

    Realistic expectations

    • Written by Duncan M from Hamden

Used a lot of these drives over the years. They're no less reliable than any other slot loader, in my experience. I have had issues in the past when drives would need to be periodically disconnected and reconnected to a different USB port, but that hasn't happened in years now. I've dropped one a few times and never had any problems from it. They can burn out after a couple of years, they are, after all, mechanical devices and moving parts wear out, but I feel they've been more durable than other drives I've owned. Don't really kniow what all the hate is about in the other reviews. Knee-jerk reactions I guess.

    Apple CD Drive

    • Written by Hannah F from VALENCIA

I recently got the MacBook Pro 13 inch with Retina Display, and I love it, but it doesn't have a CD Drive. I bought the one Apple offers and it's perfect. It's super easy to work and it is small and portable. Although, it does not play Blu Ray cd's. I suggest one look into that upon purchasing.

Works Fine, but don't expect too much.

    • Written by Mark William U from Quezon City

I bought this with very very low expectations.I read the reviews and I am aware of the problems. I just had to get this as a manner of last resort. Much to my surprise, it actually worked fine on importing CDs to my itunes. It was a bit slow in the beginning but it became faster after a while. Reading/playing my old burned DVDs from cdr king, china dvd-r from circa 2005 works fine. Its quiet compared to my old lacie dvd drive. Cons: No manual/force eject button, Expensive & USB cable is too short. Pros: No need to plug separately for power, quiet. Warning: Only works on macs with NO built in Optical Drive.

    It works!

    • Written by Publications O from Toronto

It works fine for me. I have years of experience with CD [starting with 2x] and DVD drives, internal and external, Mac and PC. I've had no complaints or issues wit the Apple USB SuperDrive while burning single and dual layer DVDs full of design files for print and on-screen. Roxio Toast had no issues handling the file organization and DiskTracker still works cataloguing the disks [works as well as ever].

    • Written by william D from Caledon

This dvd drive for Mac is ok but there should be an extenal dvd reject button as the cd keeps getting stick and it won't come out with out playing with the drives. Also apple needs the add colours like spance grey, gold, jet black and also needs to make a USB C moldel

    Don't believe the bad hype!

    • Written by Itrath S from Vancouver

Debated buying one of these for months, read all the reviews. Bought a samsung model and tried it out and it was impossibly slow to transfer a file on to my macbook air. Bought the Apple superdrive and it is the same speed as when the cd drive was part of the laptop. A massive difference. Totally worth the extra money to save on time and frustration when using other external hard drive - or at least the one that I compared it to which was about half way between the cheapest and most expensive models. My only feedback to Apple would be that the connecting port should be thunderbolt instead of usb.

    • Written by Stephane Y from Magny le Hongre

Great drive, good-looking and reliable. I have used for 2 years now with 3 different Macs and never had any issues. If a Blueray version comes out, I'll happily buy another one.

    This SuperDrive works great!

    • Written by Bradford P from Espanola

I received shipment of my driver a week ago. After a simple plug and play I was ready to go. First off I had quite a backlog of CDs to transfer to iTunes. The first minor glitch was the method of ejection, which is not on the drive. A quick search of online manuals solved that quandary. A simple tap on the f12 key releases the CD smoothly and silently. I've already, in three days, imported over 75 discs without a single hang up. Mind you, these discs were in every quality grade imaginable. The small size of the drive is appreciated and being able to burn as well as import makes its versatility a real plus. I know that I could have bought a less expensive drive but I trust the Apple brand and I love the way it looks with my Mac mini in their brushed steel cases. Definitely a five star purchase.

    BURNED OLD CD'S FLAWLESSLY

    • Written by John G from hartwell

I almost didn't buy this because of the negative reviews. I specifically wanted to use it to burn my old music cd's into my iTunes library. I have my old original Metallica, Motley Crue, Van Halen etc. cd's from my late 80's metal days and figured it might be problematic but everyone of them burned flawlessly! If that's along the lines of your intended use GO FOR IT! AWESOME DRIVE!

    Happy with the Superdrive.

    • Written by Theodore O from West Winfield

First off I wasn't happy that the new iMac didn't come with a built in CD/DVD player. Secondly, after reading the reviews I was frankly stunned that they were so negative. I called my go to guy at the Apple Store and asked his opinion about the Superdrive. He said that he'd never had any problems and was surprised that the reviews were negative. So, I ordered one. Out of the box it has functioned as it should. I've had no issues with speed, hanging up, ejecting the discs or copying files. Still not happy about having to tie up a USB port, but it works smoothly and recommend it. I wonder how many people who wrote the negative reviews bought their versions somewhere other than an Apple Store.

Had mine for around 18mo, no problems.

    • Written by John B from WHITTIER

Works fine, no issues with reading/burning DVDs on my 15" MBP Retina. It definitely doesn't work well with cheap DVD blank media, has to use B-grade or higher. Can't use it with a hub, must be plugged in directly. Overall, a solid little box that does its job. Low review ratings are confusing as it's rated well elsewhere online.

    Impressed

    • Written by Donna K from Phoenix

Was worried after reading the reviews but over the last 2 days I've watched a movie, downloaded 6 photo back-up cds and imported about 45 music cds with not a single issue. Complaints about no eject button is easily accomplished using the eject button on my keyboard or the onscreen eject. I am happy!

    Works As It Should

    • Written by Larry T D from Lake Wales

I was reluctant to purchase this drive after all the bad reviews, however I'm happy to have ignored them. Had it for three months or so and it operates perfectly. I've burned both CDs and DVDs flawlessly..never a problem. I do admit to using name brand disks..never bothered with the discount stuff. Also never experienced an ejection problems as so many complained. I use the keyboard ejection key as well as 'command e'. Also I've dragged the desktop disk image to 'trash'. Neither method has ever failed..not once. No problems and if forced to have a USB drive sitting on my desk, I want it to at least match my equipment...this one looks great as do most Apple products. Oh yeah..playing prerecorded disk, movies, etc. is also perfect.
