    Not worth the trouble

    • Written by michael B from chestnut hill cove

I bought this device not once but TWICE and NEITHER one worked! Plug it in and .... nothing. Used another USB plug and... nothing. Read the instructions again. Very vague. Almost insulting. Nothing. Returned to store and repeat. Nothing. Got fed up and purchased a LG External CD/DVD Drive for $25. Apple accessories are the worst. They want to make their products proprietary so they can sell you more junk for more money and none of it works. QC has gone downhill. If it wasn't for the fact that I love my Macbook Pro and hate Windows, Apple would've lost me a long time ago.

    Should have read reviews

    • Written by Daniel H from Vancouver

Should be called Apple SuperStupid Drive. Bought SuperStupid not even considering taking a gander at the reviews because, well, its APPLE. Plugged SuperStupid into my very intelligent iMac Pro and voila! Nuttin. SuperStupid sits there and munches on DVDs like it is doing a taste test and eventually spits it out, Thank God cause the iMac keyboard can't figure out what SuperStupid is. Horrid experience, definitely not "plug and play". Please replace your CEO with someone who will fix SuperStupid and some of the other garbage that Apple has recently released.

    Piece of Junk

    • Written by Karen P from Monroe

I bought this because my new iMac didn't have a CD player like my old one did. And this piece of junk broke in a couple months, and I don't use it that much for it to get overworked. Apple gave me a new one. That broke in less than 2 months also. Now I can't download my CDs onto my computer. Bummer for sure.

Stumbles over regular CDs - spits them out as error Disk Not Found - and does not read or write Blu-ray. Better options available for your Mac.

Do not waste your money & time & grief!

    • Written by Gabrielle S from Carrollton

I am so disappointed in Apple for selling me this CD/DVD reader that doesn't work, nor do they don't stand behind it. Not only have I wasted the full price of $80 plus tax, but I've wasted so much time trying to make it work w/Apple's help too. I also now have to figure out a way to get the disk out of the reader. The disk has photos that are not on any other device. So I'm going to have to break it open somehow and I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and that can end up hurting my hands and wrists. I really wish I didn't have to resort to bad-mouthing the product and all here. But the warranty was no help and this is clearly a manufacturing defect. I think Apple is making enough profit to do better...This is a clear failure in customer service. Just look at all the bad reviews of this product. I'm sure the few good ones are written when they first got this item. It worked for the first two times. Apple, shame on you for selling this. I wish I never bought it. I only gave a star because I had to.

    Worthless & Unreliable

    • Written by Guillermo A from Miami

Got new Apple USB SuperDrive as a gift 5 months ago. The product is unreliable as it will not read basic DVDs, CDs, etc. I successfully used the Superdrive 3 times but always had problems ejecting discs and the drive itself from my MacBook Pro. Thereafter the product has not worked again, now not even accepting discs into the drive itself. Not the quality one would expect from Apple. Highly disappointing especially given the cost of this product. Do not buy!

This drive needs a manual eject

    • Written by KATHARINE S from New York

I am trying to access material archived on CDs/DVDs, and trying to get discs to eject is a feat. It's ridiculous how much time this takes. If the disc isn't reading correctly the software eject messages don't get through. Software only solutions are NOT adequate. It's a needless, avoidable problem. Please redesign and include a manual eject.

Waste of money. A lot of money!

    • Written by Ortiz I from Pueblo West

So I purchased this Superdrive without looking for reviews prior to the purchase because Apple is usually a great product. I didn't
want to use an off market brand drive with my iMac. However, this drive would not read the first 5 discs I inserted. Just made a lot of noice and nothing. The next 2 discs, noise and then ejected automatically. The last disc it said it was not compatible with the region 1 setting on the drive. I have to set the drive to another region. You only get 5 opportunities to do this before the drive doesn't allow any more changes. These are US purchased materials (printed in the USA). It should play. The drive doesn't tell me what region it thinks the disc is from, so I would have to use my allowed region selections, up to 5, to check each disc and see if it will play. Totally absurd. Apple really flopped on this one. Lesson learned tho, Apple is not as good as they were 10 years ago.

    medium write error

    • Written by Alexander S from Peaks Island

I bought this drive to work with my MacBook Air, and the results have been disappointing. It plays CDs and DVDs flawlessly, but I receive a "medium write error" message about 50% of the time I attempt to burn a CD, and it doesn't matter what brand of discs I use. This is an inferior product and there has been no helpful support from Apple to find remedies for this problem. I have wasted money on the CDs that do not burn properly.

Ate My Dvd and Won't Return It!

    • Written by William H from Crete

Inserted a DVD-RW disc into Superdrive. Device not recognized by Disk Utility. Can't eject since it's not recognized. Twenty minutes on phone with Apple Care, no luck after many SWAG's. Finally he tells me 'it only reads discs, can't burn them'. He didn't read the Apple website selling the device. Now a trip to the 'Genius Store' where they will rip it open and take out the disc and hopefully tell me what will work in the device.

Don't buy unless they prove it works at the 'Genius Store'

    Useless device

    • Written by Samuel B from Jacksonville

This "device" is a piece of junk, literally!
Will not eject disks, messes up OS, and requires multiple attempts to remove the disks from the screen/system,
I just smashed one out of frustration on concrete floor. Shame on you people who designed this... (or maybe who made this....)
Do not buy! Waste of money!

    Poor quality product

    • Written by Tami H from Cypress

My SuperDrive hasn't even been used that much since purchase, the last couple of nights I wanted to watch some brand new DVDs of educational videos and a miniseries that is available via downloading or streaming. The drive is not reading the discs and ejecting them. Ridiculous performance considering the number of times it's been used during my ownership of the device. This is the king of Apple DUDs. Does anyone know if there is a reliable third party compatible DVD player/burner?

Not durable and impossible if a disc gets stuck

    • Written by Daphney C from Gray Court

We have purchased and feel stuck with this disc drive. Our children have jammed the disc drive 2x and both times the drive broke due to the disc jam. This is something that happens all the time with littles and its amazing how Apple has not problem solved this major flaw. There is no way to forcibly eject a disc, and if the Geniuses end up opening it up to get the discs out, the drive is toast. It only comes with a 12 month warranty so after 1 year your $80 drive is trash.

    Superdrive

    • Written by Kevin K from Wilmington

Purchased this drive a few months ago. I used it three times and the disk wouldn't eject. Tried all the options I could find online and posts. My Mac couldn't eject this disk and I was getting multiple error messages. Well it's sitting on my shelf with the disk in it and I had to purchase a different brand. I would not recommend this product

    Cheap piece of junk

    • Written by Judy L from San Diego

I have multiple Apple devices that I love dearly, but this external drive is unworthy of the Apple name. There are no external controls, such as an eject button. My DVDs get stuck in this thing and it can literally take hours of pressing eject on the DVD software controls and hoping that it will eventually come out. I've tested them in other machines to rule out disk issues, and the problem is definitely not my disks! One of these units died after only 16 months so I foolishly bought another and it's just as bad. For nearly $80 I expect a better piece of equipment. Apple, you should be ashamed of yourself for putting your name on this. I absolutely will not buy any more of these pieces of garbage!

    • Written by Omar M from Manchester

Unreliable, incompatible and way overpriced. Remove the logo and i would mistake it for some $2 gimmicky DVD drive. If the SuperDrive refuses to eject an important CD then god help you because Apple certainly will not or rather it cannot due to the design its flawed design.

    Embarrassing lack of quality

    • Written by Neil W from Calgary

Bought one, it would randomly eject disks and often couldn't read disks at all. Exchanged for another and had the same problem. Returned and bought a different brand (much cheaper, even!) and it works perfectly. It is crazy that Apple can't put a decent drive into this product as it *looks* nice :(
