    USB SuperDrive a Piece of

    I purchased a 27" mac OS Sierra 10.12.6 in 2016, about 18 months ago. I quickly realized I would need the USB superdrive to listen to CD's and burn them. I only started to burn CD's in the past month and it worked once. Now it does not work! Nor can I eject the CD I was about to burn.

    Already I have had to replace the harddrive about 14 months after I purchased the computer (one year warranty expired), and now this piece of junk stopped working. I am sure I have used it six times listening to CD's and this was the second attempt at burning a CD. Mac quality has gone down the toilet. I have a second hand Macbook which continues to work after I've used it for ten years, but the new stuff...I am not impressed!

    I am cannot figure out the bad reviews either! It saved my life...I am a paralegal stuck in a windows world. And thankfully found this little piece of heaven and now do need to convert from my macbook pro to a windows laptop. Which for a total mac person would have been rough.

    I have had no problems burning pdfs etc.

    Even bought a magic mouse to go along.

    Utter rubbish

    At about the time the end of warranty was nearing, it started rejecting discs spasmodically. I didn't think it was a fault & didn't use it on a daily basis. By the time the warranty ended, it would not accept any discs at all. I've resorted to a Nu drive that is over 10 years old &, while sometimes the Mac won't start up with it connected, it otherwise works flawlessly. I've used Apple for almost 25 years & they're not what they used to be & just seem to be resting on their laurels, these days.

    Don't Buy

    About to buy again for my daughter

    I came online today to buy this product a second time and was shocked by all the bad references it's been given. I bought my first one along with a new iMac going on 3 years ago and have never had an issue. It just works like you'd expect every time I need it. I'm buying the second one today with full confidence for my daughter's new iMac.

    Apple SuperDrive not compatible with HyperDrive

    So I love Mac and Apple products. Went and bought a new MacBook Pro two days ago when my "vintage" MacBook Pro expired. Super excited. Bought a HyperDrive and a SuperDrive. THEY AREN'T COMPATIBLE. So now I get to go back and purchase an Apple USB C adapter just for my SuperDrive. I didn't discover this out until after I'd spent an hour and a half searching forums and support. Found the info on the HyperDrive support site. This info really should be included on the SuperDrive support site, where it can be EASILY found. I do still love my Mac, even though we are having a "tiff" at the moment.

    Works As It Should

    I was reluctant to purchase this drive after all the bad reviews, however I'm happy to have ignored them. Had it for three months or so and it operates perfectly. I've burned both CDs and DVDs flawlessly..never a problem. I do admit to using name brand disks..never bothered with the discount stuff. Also never experienced an ejection problems as so many complained. I use the keyboard ejection key as well as 'command e'. Also I've dragged the desktop disk image to 'trash'. Neither method has ever failed..not once. No problems and if forced to have a USB drive sitting on my desk, I want it to at least match my equipment...this one looks great as do most Apple products. Oh yeah..playing prerecorded disk, movies,etc. is also perfect.

    Missing the most important thing

    So, I just purchased the brand new 2017 MBPro 15" and asked for the Mouse and Optical Drive. Thought, this is so exciting and I cannot wait to get home to use it. Guess what.... it is a USB2.1 cable and not the USB-C so it is unable to be used without now having to go buy an adapter. There should have been an updated version for this product when the new USB-C MacBooks came out.

    Very Slow and Outdated

    This is very slow and outdated for an Apple product. It is also not possible to eject a disk without going into the laptop software. All in all it is like a piece of Microsoft piece of junk

    Bought a SuperDrive today, popped in a brand new CD and the entire time the CD was in it sounded like it was being tossed around. It rattled so loud I could barely concentrate on what I was doing. To make matters worse, I went to eject the CD and that almost turned into a failed mission. The CD kept rattling around and since there is no direct way to remove the CD except to "eject" it using the option on your actual computer, I almost couldn't get it out because my Macbook would not eject the CD while it continuously spun around for no reason at all (the CD was no longer in actual use). I finally was able to "force" it to stop spinning and eject the CD. I now understand why Apple does not automatically add CD drives to their computers... the quality of their computers would tank. Taking this thing right back to Apple first thing in the morning and getting a different brand. Gave it two starts simply because I was able to retrieve the information from the CD that I was needing and because of the ease of set up and overall use.

    Absolute piece of junk

    The CD drive on the 486SX I purchased in the late 90s worked flawlessly - opened every time. Yet Apple is struggling with this concept. Like all Apple products that do away with useful features like an eject "button" in the name of styling, this product will fast become a paperweight - an expensive one. Time after time DVDs would jam in this thing would require all sorts of reboots and even command lines in terminal to get the disc out. Finally, it just wouldn't respond to anything and that was the end of the product. And don't think there is any way you can simply prize it open with a knife etc - no no no, its only resting place has to be the bin.

    No issues in 3 years!

    I’ve been using the same SuperDrive since Fall of 2014 and it works perfectly as expected every time I go to use it. Granted, I only use it once every three months for about 30 minutes to rip CDs and transfer data from DVDs otherwise it sits dormant, disconnected from my computer but I would highly recommend this product. Absolutely no issues whatsoever and very dependable!

    USB Superdrive

    I bought this 18 months ago with my MacBook Pro Retina and used it to make several DVD's of a family wedding. Come to use it again last week and there was nothing. No recognition on the desktop but it was powered up as you could hear the drive start and see a red light inside the slot. Time to call an Apple expert on the timed phone call service. Bottom line was the hard drive had gone...Superdrive has only done 5 DVD's. What really made me annoyed was the technician told me the drive has broken because it's not been powered up on a regular basis. So Apple have made a product to self destruct if you do not power it up every couple of weeks......I am totally stunned and disgusted.

    It works for me!

    In spite of some of the bad reviews, I wanted to give the Super Drive a try. I received it on a Monday afternoon and by Thursday afternoon I had successfully ripped 201 CD's. The ONLY issue I had was that it balked at trying to eject a CD with a paper label on it. I was wary of ripping it in the first place, but it worked. I would not use labeled discs in it in the future. I am thrilled that I was able to rip my whole collection so quickly and easily. I have also been able to burn CD's with no problems. I hope it continues to work as well for me.

    Works Well. No Problems Here.

    I received a CD with files on it that I needed to review for work, so I went out and got the USB Superdrive. I saw that it did not have the best reviews, but for me it works just fine. Of course, all I really use it for is to review files. I eject the CD when Im done and I also disconnect it when I am not using it. There are much cheaper options out there, but I wanted to stick with Apple. I give it 4 stars because I think that by now the price on these should be no more than maybe $50.00
