I wish they had left these drives in the computers.

    • Written by Laura E from Boalsburg

I have used this drive once or twice effectively, but more often than not I don't have it with me when I need it. Another big problem that I have is that it doesn't play DVDs from other regions. Finally, it's difficult to remove the disc, since although you can unplug it from your computer to cut the power, you can't remove the disc except connecting it to your computer and having your computer eject it. This is a problem when you insert a disc but the computer won't recognize it. Definitely not satisfied for the cost of this device.

    Apple USB Superdrive Total Failure

    • Written by Stephen S from Great Yarmouth

I bought this Apple USB Superdrive with my newly purchased Mac 3 years ago.
Worked OK for that period of time bearing in mind I hardly used it!! Kept it safe in the box when not in use.
Today my Mac would not recognise it on the Desktop. I went through all the relevant protocols to ensure it did. Next it would not accept any discs and has now totally broken down.I have read so many other unfortunate people have had similar issues with this product.
Why Apple would endorse this poor quality item is beyond me.
Today I ordered a OMorc Slim USB CD DVD Burner from Amazon at £16.99!! With very good reviews. Better than £70.00 for a new Apple Product that is probably a lesser quality item than what I am buying.
    Shame on you Apple!!

    Another one bites the dust.

    • Written by Michael M from SAN MARINO

    One Apple Hard Drive died.

    2 Time Capsules died.

1 iMac 27" fusion drive died.

    None of them recoverable.

    The SuperDrive.

Used a few times, always put it back in the box after use so that dust would not find its way in. And still, it died with absolute minimal use. Truly disgusted with the lack of quality from Tim Cook's version of Apple.

Now I need to find another vendor that I can rely on with regards to a CD/ DVD drive, sorry, still have tons of storage on old discs, not like Tim Cook says begone SuperDrive and all my data is accessible elsewhere.

    Worst Apple product

    • Written by Mirza N A from Huddersfield

Tried unsuccessfully to use this SuperDrive, it failed to work, even with Apple Support.
When connected via USB to iMac, it fails to be visible on the Desktop. Apple support asked me if it had a separate power supply.
It is sold with the caption it can read and write cds and dvds, which is not possible.
I would not recommend this to anyone. I also tried YouTube instruction videos to get help, but no luck.

    NOT SUPER**

    • Written by Victoria P from West Chester

PLEASE do not purchase the USB Superdrive by Apple. The first CD I put in it could never finish installing. I blamed this on some possible scratching on the disc. I then proceeded to try to install my other CD's. Not one of them could be read by the disc drive and was forced to shut down my computer by the power button to eject disks. 80$ down the drain. I threw away the reciept being naive that it was an Apple product and would be good quality!

    Would not work

    • Written by RICHARD S from Mendham

Plugged the new Superdrive in to my new iMac to see if I could get FCP to burn a DVD. Nothing. Tried then to have it read an existing DVD-nothing. Might be time to sell the Apple stock if this is the direction of quality control in a company I used to say I had complete faith in their products. I am going back to the Apple store to see about a refund.

    Not worth the money

    • Written by Benjamin H from Watchet

Appears to work. However, you move it whilst it is in use it makes horrible noises and stops working. Unfortunately it comes with a USB end and not a USB C. So after spending a fortune on the drive I need to spend another part of £20 just so I can content it to my Mac. I wish I done some more research and looked at other drives. I love my apple products however, this is a real disappointment.

    Total Rubbish

    • Written by Simon P from Camberley

I bought this product quite a while ago to go with my MacBook Pro 2015" (purchased both in late 2015 or early 2016 ish) I have used the Superdrive literally a handful of times (maybe 5-6 times) since I bought it and quickly realised that my fears of the lack of drive on my MacBook Pro were unfounded and I actually did not need it really. So therefore I put it back in it's box and original packaging in my office draw for the last 2 years almost! I have come to use it randomly today to look at a medical CD I was given, and the whole drive no longer works! Wont accept discs despite powering up. I haven't even touched it for almost 2 years, and it has been safely away in its own drawer, yet no longer works, utter rubbish!

Just bought the superdrive, and simply does not work, it keeps doing noise, trying to read and does not do anything at all. very disappointing for an Apple product that should be compatible. Now what do I do with this junk?

    Do Not Recommend

    • Written by Connor L from Wolverhampton

I have been through three USB superdrive units. When converting CDs to add them to my iTunes library, it would randomly spit out the CD and fail to read it (even discs with no marks or blemishes) then cause iTunes to crash. At first I thought it was my install of macOS and iTunes, so I did a full system reinstall, but the issue prevailed again after a few minutes of use. So it seems that not are there only software issues, it also damages discs by leaving a scratch near the centre hole, so be careful if you do buy this.

I've now moved to an alternative brand external disc drive which is working perfectly and reading all discs.

Unfortunately this product is very much 'form over function' - it looks great but it doesn't perform up to the users requirements.

    Final verdict: do not purchase

    Do. Not. Buy.

    • Written by Brett H from Edmonton

Simply amazing that with all the technological advances Apple has made, they can’t figure out a simple external drive to burn CDs.

I’ve gone to all lengths to avoid buying this... but because it was the only one I knew that was readily available and compatible, I pulled the trigger.

An absolute waste of money. Save yourself from this awful creation. 0/10, would not buy again.
