    Works Great!

    • Written by Michael H from Mississauga

I purchased my Superdrive when i bought my MacBook Pro back in January. I've imported most of my CD's with it and they've all come out sounding perfectly. It's compact and I can bring it with me anywhere I go. I would recommend it if you need an optical drive for your Mac or MacBook.

    Dog Carp

It worked a few times, then it started to need four or five disks to get one to work. Then it failed completely - it will fail to verify all disks. Don't buy it.

    Excellent Drive

    • Written by Bryce F from Elgin

I went for this drive because it matches the aesthetics of my other apple products. I've had it for about 4 years and have only had one problem, admittedly it was probably my fault for putting a disk in there that was in less than stellar shape. Overall flawless AND pretty. I've imported over 100cds with this thing and it's still going. I only wish it was a bit faster.

    No problems here

    • Written by Teresa T from Quincy

I purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive despite the less than enthusiastic endorsement of some users.

To date, I've experienced no problems with it whatsoever while playing movies (which is my main purpose for buying it). Quite literally, plug and play without drama or poor performance. Recommend if you need for play back. For more advanced usage, read other reviews to get a better idea.

Was worried after reading the reviews but over the last 2 days I've watched a movie, downloaded 6 photo back-up cds and imported about 45 music cds with not a single issue. Complaints about no eject button is easily accomplished using the eject button on my keyboard or the onscreen eject. I am happy!

    Awful. Awful. AWFUL!

    • Written by Aaron U from SPRING BRANCH

I bought the Super Drive for use with my MacBook Pro, and it hasn't worked since the day I bought it. Without rehashing what so many other disappointed users have said already, I will say this: DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS DRIVE!!!!!!! If I could give it 0 stars, I would......

Awful product - do not buy - it broke

    • Written by Mona M from West Bloomfield

This completely stopped working after about 10 uses. Wow, You pay $75 for an Apple external drive and I now was going to buy a replacement, but see the MASSIVE number of 1 star reviews. Big disappointment by Apple. DO NOT PURCHASE. I am going to try Samsung.

    Crossing Fingers

    • Written by James A from san francisco

So Far, so good. My experience is that most external optical drives receive, at best, mediocre reviews. I bought this drive today for my late 2012 iMac, and have successfully ripped 2 CDs so far. I don't know why Apple doesn't just include a built in optical drive anymore. Whatever. I'll come back later after a few days, or weeks, with an update. Right now, I'm just crossing my fingers that this thing works out.

    Not reliable!!

    • Written by Sterett P from Leesburg

I received this new as a gift to work with my new blazing fast iMac, and I couldn't be more disappointed. I burn CD's so I can play a cappella learning tracks in the car (old car) and every time I try to burn my playlist, it will not read the first track. I tried slowing down the burn speed, etc. no avail. Will look for another product.

    What about power?

    • Written by Glenn E from La Mirada

Drive does NOT work on a brand new USB 3 hub. Didn't work on my older USB 3.0 powered hub either.
It must be plugged directly into your Mac (or, oddly, into one of he USB ports on the back of your Cinema monitor. (me and the 12 other people who still have one).

    what a hunka junk!

    • Written by Cheryl M from Maumelle

Second time I tried to use it - my computer (iMac 27" Retina display) won't even read the device! Now I have a software DVD stuck in the thing so heading to the local Apple store to see if they can remove it. VERY disappointing! I gave it a 1 star only because negative starts are not an option.

    Epileptic drive

    • Written by Robin J from Seattle

works great for about 50 reads then vibrates like mad every time you try to insert a disk. Then it spits the disk out. Gave it a single "star" rating because I got the disk back. ;). Do not buy this product. Weird drop in quality for this company.

    Excellent as always

    • Written by Alexander P from Norwich

The SuperDrive is as excellent as any other Apple product you would buy. It runs at almost no sound whatsoever and runs very efficiently. Its small form factor means you can place it with ease just about anywhere on your desk with your Mac or even take it with you to plug into your MacBook! Very pleased.

I bought this SuperDrive because Apple doesn't build iMacs with built-in SuperDrives anymore. That's the only negative aspect of my iMac 27" Retina. I need the SuperDrive mainly for importing CD's into iTunes. I'm old school in that I don't believe in music subscription services and would rather have all my bought and paid for music in my old iPod Classic. Unfortunately, this SuperDrive has a persistent glitch that almost always means the last two or three tracks of a CD don't get imported. And there's no work-around that I've discovered. I'm looking for another drive. There must be other companies out there that offer them.

Frustrating using the Apple USB SuperDrive

    • Written by Andrew B from Belmont

Very disappointed with this product. Copying my CDs to iTunes is now a hit or miss affair. It starts copying then stops saying cannot find a track then ejects the disc ! I have no problems copying the same CDs to iTunes on my MacBook. So most of the times I copy my CDs to iTunes on my MacBook then transfer then songs to my iMac. Very very slow process. There is definitely something wrong with these USB Superdrives

    Do not buy this product

    • Written by Susan D from Pleasanton

This product does not work on the Mac OS even though the apple technician and box will tell you it does. The first one I bought was replaced when it didn't work. 'The second one stopped working after 1 month. I spent 2 hours in the Apple Store trying to have them figure out why and really they have no idea why. All they could tell me was that maybe it was a problem with the USB adapter, that you have to buy to connect the superdrive, which does not recognize the superdrive to the computer. The superdrive does not show on on the desktop and if you put a disc in, you have no way to get it out. They could not explain why it worked initially then. And beware they would not refund my money because they said it wouldn't count under the warranty because the superdrive actually works, it's a computer firmware problem that needs to be fixed, but there is no fix for it!!!So it won't work on my computer. It was like talking in circles. Save your receipt. I do wish I had listened to those other reviews. What is happening with apple products, they are junk now and the customer service is terrible

    Rubbish. Again.

    • Written by Niall O from Manchester

I've owned 3 Apple CD/DVD-R drives; in a 2006 MacBook Pro, a 2009 MacBook and a 2012 USB Superdrive. They all failed early in their lives. Apple have the brass neck to charge £79 for this now. The exact same drive was £65 when I bought it in Jan 2013. If you want to know, while trying to burn a DVD using Toast Titanium 10 I got an error message basically saying the drive didn't like the media. Not the first time that has happened but the experience melted my unSuperdrive. It will read CDs but not DVDs and none of the fixes out there (and I've searched) make any difference. The hardware is broken. From doing something it's supposed to do. Apple, why don't you put this rubbish out of its misery like you did with the optical drive in the laptop range? Sometimes no solution is better than a lousy one.

    Very Temperamental, not super!

    • Written by David W from Belfast

I purchased one to be used with my iMac, primarily to rip & burn cd's. It has proven to be very temperamental in use - sometimes will begin to rip tracks ok then suddenly decides to stop/freeze or whatever, just keeps humming away with no progress being made. Also becomes very difficult to eject the disc from iTunes and end up having to force quit iTunes before ejecting the disc with the keyboard key. Very frustrating piece of kit, although on the odd occasion it does work perfectly! Wouldn't recommend for the price!

My only disappointment with an Apple product. Ever.

    • Written by Stacey F from NEWTON

I read the reviews and purchased the product anyway as my faith in Apple products is strong. It did not work at all with the disc I needed to use or any other disc I had. I then had to go out to purchase a Verbatim CD/DVD Writer to get my work done. I popped in the same disc. It worked immediately with no issues. This is the first time that I can say I am disappointed in Apple. I have an iPad Pro, iPhone, MacBook, and iMac and they are all five stars and more. I only bothered to write this in the hopes that Apple addresses the issues with this product at some point.
