    3rd time

    • Written by berkay O from barcelona

In 4 years. My MacBook Pro is from 2015 and I bought three chargers, they barely last a year, smell, burn and dangerous. So, unreliable that I charge my computer only after kids asleep and when I can watch it. There are other brands in Amazon that are apple/ MacBook compatible half the price. My wife bought them-- they also last a year, so not particularly better but cheaper at least. I am buying another one today because I cannot charge a non-apple product as an expense- company policy. What a waste of resources for everyone!

    Breaks right away

    • Written by Laura C from New York

The rubber encasing the wire started to weaken and fray within a year, even with light use. This is not my first and these always break. This is clearly an inferior, overpriced product. I wish Apple cared, but there's a clear trend in the reviews of their chargers...

    Poor manufacturing

    • Written by Rupert M from Camberwell

Frayed wire, broken sheath and broken around strain relief. Dangerous after 2yrs of use. Looking for an oem version as £79 for this shoddy product is extortion. Old Apple charger over 10yrs old. Not what it used to be if this is anything to go by

    not built for long-term use

    • Written by Sam T from Cardiff

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch) from mid 2014, and I've used it for a lot. I use it to play games, to do all of my uni work on and to talk with friends. The laptop itself is fantastic, even though it's 5 years old it still feels "new", despite some nicks here and there, but the charger.. I can't say is anywhere near the quality that the laptop is.

I started having problems with it probably.. a year into owning it. The rubber around the wire started to disfigure, and I would have to use tape to stop it from exposing the bare wire itself. This was an okay fix for the time, but 5 years on, the charger is 90% electrical tape and 10% dodgy half-rotten rubber. It still charges, but it's near impossible to rely on as the amount of tape I've been forced to use on the wire has rendered it into an almost stiff and weighty rod.

I know apple has an awful track record with their charger cables, I've stopped buying phone cables from them because they break within a week or so of use. I also don't bend or misuse my chargers, as I want to make everything I buy last.

I've finally given in, and tomorrow I'm going to buy a new charger. I can't trust this one anymore, it's completely ruined and I blame the cheap and horrid rubber used to wrap the wires. They just rot off completely, it's awful. One touch and it disintegrates like pie crust.

Whilst it still "works", the charger is disgusting quality and I'm furious at how expensive it is to replace them.

Plastic breaks down and exposes wire

    • Written by Paige M from Athens

$79 is outrageous for such a delicate product. The plastic coating is very flimsy. Mine started breaking down around the part that plugs into my computer first, and it since has spread to multiple places in the cord, exposing the wires underneath.

I agree with other posters about the quality of the cable. I rarely move my cable. It never gets folded up. It has been plugged into the same outlet for years and I use my MacBook on a regular basis, but don't often take the charger anywhere with me, as I have a separate laptop for work. I've had the laptop since 2012 and I'm using the same cable, but the rubber just split about a centimetre from the part that plugs into the computer.I've put electrical tape on it to hold it together. We'll see how long it lasts. i don't think 6 years is unreasonable for a charger, but having said that, I've had a Toshiba laptop for almost 12 years, runs slow, but still works and I still have the original cords - not frayed at all. For the amount of money, the quality is disappointing.

    3rd charger

    • Written by Tyler S from Troy

On my 3rd charger. This is so disappointing, and a reason why I would switch from a Mac to a Windows laptop. Truly upsetting. My laptop charger from 2008 for my microsoft laptop still works and is not torn. Wish Apple could take note. Just real upset.

And yes, I am an owner of an iPhone as well as an iPad, and mac desktop. Just sad Apple.

    Poor design and quality

    • Written by Robert G from Spring Branch

Am now on my third MagSafe 2 Power Adapter for a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro. The first two both failed at the computer end. Was careful with the first one and very careful with the second one. Rarely take the charger with me and it sits on the left side of the computer so it goes straight in with no bend in the cable yet it failed again. A very poor design and quality. At least Apple could design one with a replaceable cable so you don't have to spend $80.00 for the whole charger.

I could not be more disappointed

    • Written by Jorge D from Long Beach

I am stunned, that Apple would have the arrogance to force this product on its customers. In 2013 I talked my then girlfriend, now my wife, into investing in an Apple computer for herself. Having been the proud owner of a 2003 (Black) Mac, as well as others, I could do nothing but rave about them. Unfortunately she has had an another entirely different. The latest: Her third power cord shredded today. I'm on my second, but I have always been an Apple apologist. But watching my wife spend her hard earned money, then get taken advantage of. Has been hard for me. I have offered to buy her a new computer, the brand entirely her choice. I'm certain, it will not be the Apple brand.

Thought you were better than this Apple!

    • Written by Stephanie S from Solana Beach

I have been through three of these chargers in three years now. I am so sick of paying $80 every time this terrible charger fall apart. Stop putting the money we pay for your horribly expensive computers in your pocket, Apple, and invest a little more in providing a product that will last as long as the computer! ZERO stars!

    Cheap material

    • Written by David H from HUNTINGTON BEACH

The part that plugs into my computer has frayed multiple times, and I have to keep replacing it. I could have bought more than two chromebooks now with how much I've spent on these chargers. It's making me feel as though Apple has done this on purpose. Our family of three has gone through 8 chargers for our mac book pros (2015 or later); it is getting ridiculous.

    • Written by Philip H from West Seneca

Agree with the other comments about the magsafe power adapter cord. Ours cracked near the connector exposing the sheath and wiring, causing the power connection to be erratic. Poor quality design and material! Need a better fix than replacing the whole unit.

embarrassing charger - two laptops and two broken charges in the same place

    • Written by Tomas V from Sydney

I have always purchased for my family and my business macs or iphones. 3rd generation... since 2002. My recent two laptops MacBookPro and MacBookAir have the same fault in the chargers. The cable broke in the same spot... Actually in the same spot broke my iphone charger charger. This is just unreal.

1st of all how come all the chargers broke in the same spot. I am paying premium price for the products and the charger brake after a couple of years. Considering I always look after my things. Once charger was actually throwing a sparks... so dangerous.

2nd I have reported this issue via web chat. nice people, then they call me in next day, amazing! They have assessed the situation and he said that he will pass this issue to senior technician but I never heard from them since then (month ago). I am so upset.

Now i have to share one charger with my wife. We both use computers for business. Also the one charger we use, doesnt' work all the time as the cable is broken, I have to spend 5 min in average to move around the cord to get the power through. This one is starting to spark again.

This is embarrassing!!! and the new charger is $120 which is overpriced. why should consumer pay so much money if the adaptor is still working but the cable has deteriorated. It is not my fault that the manufacturer is using bad material. I am forced to buy a new one now. This is a principal issue as well... I will be thinking twice with my next laptop purchase.

not good at all... will share my experience

I hope apple will wake up and fix this and not look at the profit all the time. What is money good for if people are unhappy. Not even Steve Jobs could take money to his grave.

3rd during writing this review I got rejected because i have used words which are not vulgar but are realistic. What is the point if I cant express my real feeling???

    Pretty good actually...

    • Written by Cloud A from Larkspur

This charger will last a fairly long time if you take care of it. I'm on my third year, and while it does have a fair bit of scratches on the plastic adapter part, it still works perfectly. If you care for your charger, it will work absolutely fine for a few years. In terms of the cable dirtying, that's easily fixed. No yellowing here.

My only issue is the cost to replace. I get that "Apple tax" applies here too but seriously, $80 for a charger is pretty criminal.

This is is now the second one to die on me. I've had my MacBook for just over a year and now it's not working. And before this I had to get another one. When I plug it the light doesn't come on. It's extremely disappointing when you have to keep replacing these. SUPER DISAPPOINTED!!!

    Yall are just wrong

    • Written by Ayush S from San Jose

Okay you guys keep saying that it breaks too fast and all that. I have had my charger for the past 4 years and Thr rubber just recently started coming apart 4 years is a long time. I actually took care of both my charger and laptop. If you just throw the thing around you are bound to ruin it and tear it. So it is your problem for not taking care of it. My only problem is the price to replace. 79 is too high for a charger. Thats my only problem.

    Short life span

    • Written by Sharon B from Pacific Palisades

I wish I could rate it zero, but it did work for 9 months, so I gave it a 1. This power cord that you MUST use to power your Macbook Pro deteriorated after 9 months. The rubber coating is very flimsy and broke open to expose the wires inside, and now it no longer charges my laptop. This cord sits in the dark behind my desk behind a wooden railing and has never been touched or moved after installation. The rubber coating is dried out and cracked. Apple has terrific laptops but horrific power cables. This is the fourth one I have had to purchase during the 6 years of owning my laptop. For a multi-billion dollar company, Apple should respect their loyal customers enough to provide quality accessories.
