    Works great for external monitors

    • Written by Chris H from Clayton

I tried several cheaper, non-apple versions of this adaptor and had problems with them. The main issue is that when I put my monitor to sleep, the other versions make my external monitors act funny. With the Apple version, it shuts the external monitors down too. This device gets a lot of poor reviews but it works perfect for what I use it for. I use two external monitors on either side of my iMac.

    Hopeless product

    • Written by Linray T from Gizo

This should not even qualify for a single star but for purposes of comments I had to rate it the lowest to my utter disappointment.

I have just purchased and adaptor yesterday and it has already having the same effect like others have commented on. When using a double monitor it works for 2 mins until the adaptor heats up then it either freezes or it flickers between the two monitors then goes of and reboots it self. This is really frustrating making me really wonder what has happened to the worlds best product? APPLE??

Had this for about 3 months and it just stopped working. No reason, no nothing. For £70 this isn't good enough.

    Everything is green

    • Written by Charlie N from Lexington

This is the second one of these adapters I've had since buying the MacBook Pro in November 2017. I do professional development in schools, so I have used a variety of projectors, and no matter what brand of projector is connected, the screen is tinted green. I bought a 3rd party VGA adapter that works fine, so I wonder if there is a design or quality issue with the Apple adapter.

    Doesn't work

    • Written by amber E from Gainesville

    It simply doesn't work.

it'll ask you to update the software nearly every time you plug in it. And yet it still fails to work most of the time. Half the time it doesn't recognize my camera, so I need to switch to use the stand-alone dongle.

Have this connected to a 2017 Macbook Pro and it's awful. It works for a while and then the VGA monitor screen starts glitching - breaks up into scrambled squares, picture gets wavy, blacks out, etc. Eventually have to reboot to get it back to normal. The USB connector is unreliable as well.

Do not buy unless you absolutely have to.

    Absolute Garbage

    This adapter doesn't work. Period.

I needed it for a presentation, and when I got to the auditorium, I couldn't display graphics.

The USB worked for a while like couple of months with my 2TB External Seagate Hard Drive and my thumb drives. Then on and off, MacBook Pro told me that I didn't eject the USB drive properly but I always did. Then one day MacBookPro completely didn't recognize the USB from the adapter at all. The notebook still recognize the monitor from the adapter though. However, I hardly used the monitor with that adapter. This is so bad!

I have a Mac Pro Mid 2017 with this multi port adapter. When i connect it to usb-c almost on every minor moving of my laptop it disconnects and my display flickers. This USB-C adapter has a very poor quality. I think Macbook's usb-c port has the same poor quality too.

Don't buy it, go for an unofficial adapter.

I was expected for this money to get a premium quality not a low one. I am very dissapointed

    Piece of you-know-what

    • Written by MICHAEL H from WATERLOO

Paid a fortune for this and it performs poorly: the USB connection doesn't work at all. The VGA does work but ... $70???

    Apple's quality control is terrible.

No QA by Apple on this dongle accessory

    • Written by Robert C from Briarcliff Manor

I too just had my new Dongle fail during a time of need (an important lecture).
As a specialist in quality assurance of manufactured goods, I can tell you that Apple doesn't have a QA program on this accessory. If they did have a QA, they would never have so many poor reviews--especially for the price. Infuriating. I've owned MacBook Pros since the very first MBP. As the saying goes "They just don't make them like they used to". Higher and higher prices, but far less dependability by Apple as the years go by. Sad to see...........

Doesn't work, don't buy, horribly broken

    • Written by Tom N from WALLASEY

First thing that happens is it will ask you to do a software update for the dongle, which will require you to do a full reboot of your computer, taking several minutes

Once that's done, plug it in and plug a VGA projector in and your machine will either freeze or kernel panic. 100% reproducible every time.

So I went to London for a conference and went the Apple store to swap it, obviously it was defective. New dongle did exactly the same thing with both my machine, and a colleagues machine on a new projector. Same issue, 100% reproducible. In the end I returned it and got my money back.

To this day I have yet to see an Apple USB C dongle work with VGA.

For reference, you can buy a much cheaper dongle that works out of the box on Amazon, and the hyperhub HDMI plugged into a basic HDMI to VGA adaptor works perfectly too

Don't expect it to work with HDMI

    • Written by Richard K from Crawley

Am at a client, preparing to give a presentation and connected the HDMI port to the projector HDMI port.

No output at all. Tried another HDMI cable, same. And, yes, it is updated to vn 2.35 latest driver.

Tried using a colleague's PC and all worked fine first time.

Can only assume Apple products are still not reliably business-ready.

There is not 100% reliable pass-through for HDMI on this product.

Should have listened to the negative reviews

    • Written by Becky B from East Lansing

Just brought this home. The USB-type C port on this adapter will permit charging, but the port won't support a USB-type C memory stick - one sold at the Apple Store. The memory stick is a SanDisc bi-functional model (has both standard A and type C connections); I tested the memory stick and it works with an older USB-standard A port on the older MacBook pro and the USB-type C on the new MacBook pro, but it does not work in this adapter. Will be returning the adapter.

For what it's worth, the USB-standard A port on the adapter works fine with the SanDisc bifunctional memory stick. I did not test the VGA connector.

Although pricey, it worked perfectly the first time right out of the box to connect my new MacBook Pro to our home television monitor via the HDMI cable. Have used it mostly to watch Netflix on a larger screen.

    Broke Within a Month

    • Written by Andrew I from Bethesda

I thought that by buying this adapter from Apple instead of a cheap knockoff, I was investing in a high-quality product. Less than a month later, every time I use it to plug in a VGA cable, my MacBook Pro shuts off and keeps shutting off and restarting until I unplug the adapter. It's truly unbelievable that Apple charges so much for such a shoddy product.

Rarely works with my Macbook 12

    • Written by Ibrahim B from Quezon City

This is the first review I've written here. The reason that prompted me to get my lazy bum to write one is coz of how disappointed I am with this USB-C VGA Dongle. Actually, I accidentally stumbled onto the review section looking for help to make my VGA dongle work! Coz I'm lucky if it works half the times I've needed it. I make a lot of presentations and bought a Macbook 12 coz it's easy to carry around. If the office that I'm presenting at has an HDMI projector or flat screen TV, yehey I'm safe coz I have a third party HDMI USB-C dongle. I'm soooooo screwed if it's an old school projector using VGA. So for these big meetings I now carry around in addition to my laptop, a pouch of dongles and a projector!!! Sigh

Much Better Than the After Market Knock Off!

    • Written by CAROLYN C from hillsborough

I was taken about by the price, but still I bought one. I needed a second one for work - didn't want to carry the adapter back and forth - for sure I'd forget at home or at work. So I bought a "look a like" off Amazon. The knock-off has lasted about 4 months and interestingly, the VGA portion is performing much like many of the reviewers are complaining about the Apple adapter. Strange because I have had the Apple adapter for both a later 2015 12 inch Retinal display and now a 2017 MacBook Pro laptop and it has been great. I use the adapter for both a monitor and to drive a projection device (both are VGA) and I charge my computer and listen to music through the USB port with a Logitech speaker. I do think that you need to make sure your VGA connection is tight. It's annoying to tighten the screws, but when one of those failed, that is when my knock-off monitor connection also failed. Just a thought...

The USB port on this adapter is like a nightmare.

    • Written by Chunsong Y from Detroit

It is not worth the price, and I even doubt whether this adapter is designed and manufactured by Apple. My SSD mobile drive, not G tech hard drive, is even not supported by the UBS 3.0 port. It causes so much inconvenience.
