Should not be marketed for data transfer

    • Written by Steven H from Berkeley

The item name is "charge cable" but the description says its good for data transfer. While it technically does transfer data, it does so at a top speed of only about 30 MB/sec. It actually makes my external SSD slower than a spinning disk. The external SSD should be about 500 MB/sec (and is that speed with a different cable)!

    Cable Has BAD ODOR

    • Written by Donna A from Alexandria

I recently purchased MacBook Pro. Upon opening the box I smelled a foul odor. Isolated this to the USB-C cable. I thought maybe after using for a week or two, cleaning it and airing it out, the smell would go away. After researching this on the internet, I was surprised to find many have had this issue. I could not find anything from Apple as to what they are doing about it. I did call Apple support and they are sending me a replacement. The two support reps I spoke to were completely unaware of this problem.

FRAGILE: mine stopped working today just after 3mths usage

    • Written by Victor L from Singapore

My 2.0m usb-c cable that comes in the box just stopped working today after owning the 2018 MBP for mere 3mths. This is appalling. Are they covered under warranty as well? There are china cables that lasts longer for a fraction of the cost of this.

    Not good :((

    • Written by ella P from leicester

I've had my MacBook Pro for around 3 months and the cable has already broken...as far as I know. There are no signs of breaks or bends but it definitely doesn't charge my laptop. When the charger was working however, it charged my Mac fast and effectively. Just wish it lasted longer and I didn't have to spend even more money to replace it.

    Nice cable

    • Written by Holly H from Brecksville

The rapid charging is awesome! I wouldn’t want to be without it. I use this cable with the C charging block and the mophie external battery which supports the C cable for rapid charging on the go.

Pervasive Mold Smell - Disgusting on-going Problem

    • Written by Corinne B from Minneapolis

I'm a consultant, and every new MacBook that comes with this cable, as well as the separately purchased boxed version has the disgusting unhealthy & pernicious smell that gets on everything around it & doesn't dissipate.

I've checked at Apple Retail Stores & Best Buy. Sometimes it's so bad you can smell it right through the box.

Apple needs to solve this problem that is originating most likely right in the factory, as computers that come direct from the factory in China have the problem.

This has been an on-going problem that I first encountered in January 2018, and repeatedly since then on every new MacBook I work with. I've been working with computers (mostly Apple) since 1985, and this has never been a problem until 2018.

Apple, PLEASE take this seriously & get it fixed. Customers are becoming disgusted with Apple, and it is affecting the bottom line, as well as the health of those with mold allergies & the sensibilities of those who practice & enjoy good hygiene.

    Great cable!

    • Written by Zacharie C from Caraquet

Bought my macbook pro 4 months ago, i take care of the cable, i dont roll it around the plug and dont ball it up at the bottom of my backpack, If you take care of it it's gonna last a long time, its a cable you got there not a rod of steel. you can't trow it anywhere and expect it's not going to break.

I didn't find the cable slow either, for the other ratings who says it is, maybe its just you macbook that can't do what you're trying to do.

Not stinky on 18 Dec 2018

    • Written by Griff D from Mountain View

Just bought the 2 meter cord. Had to see whether it was stinky. Putting my nose up to the coil, it had an interesting slight odor. Plugged it between my Mac and charger (charges as expected). I have a pretty sensitive nose. I don't detect an odor coming from the cord while the laptop is on my lap. If I press the cord to my nose and inhale, I do smell a slight odor similar to that of rubber. While you may have been daunted by other reviews about the cable being stinky, I encourage to make the purchase.

    Poor build quality

    • Written by Brad P from Fawkner

As per others: nearly $3K MacBook Pro slipped off my sofa arm onto my sofa (a 15cm drop onto the soft seat) and broke the cable head.

Incomprehensible that Apple can charge so much for such an inferior piece of kit.

    cable odor overpowering

    • Written by Eric S from Holt

So Very disappointed with this cable. Tried to buy a new MacBook Pro, but the cable smell was so bad, we eventually had to return the computer. Tried airing it out in the basement, then the garage with no success. Causes headaches and nausea, and the odor seems to spread to everything the cable comes in contact with. We returned the cable to Apple store for a new one, but sadly had the same result. The staff in the store, including the manager, reportedly had never heard of the issue, but did admit the cable smells of mold when they opened a third one. Apparently all the cables are made of the same materials. This causes me to question why I would ever buy another product from Apple. We are long term users. I hope this issue will be corrected soon.

Flimsy, poor design choice for laptop charging purposes

    • Written by Amanda O from Bellevue

This is the worst laptop charger I've ever used. The metal is remarkably flimsy (it could just be apple products, though I have not purchased any other brand), especially considering USB-C is designed to stay in the port even with a some resistance (if the laptop or cord gets bumped, the cord will pull the laptop with it to a degree, but the metal within the port will also bend), as opposed to a more magnetic and less physical mechanism, which is optimal for laptop chargers.

I ordered two of these cables for my new iPad Pro, since the cable that comes in the box of this $1500 device is criminally short. Well, these cables work fine and are a bit thicker than that one, but wow do they STINK. Both of these cables smell STRONGLY of mold/mildew. I don't mean to say that they have a light, bad smell. The stench of these cables is overpowering.

I honestly can't believe Apple would sell something like this.

everyone is right this cable and standard is actually a disappointment

    • Written by TJ H from Santa Monica

You can basically only use this cable to charge, and you HAVE to use the apple cable to charge at full speed. aftermarket cables in my experience take twice as long to charge. So the "wireless future" that apple has described is actually double the cables you carry around with you all th time. Apple is expecting the aftermarket to plug all the gaps between accessories and macbooks, but its not graceful and its not carefully enough thought through. If I pull this cable our of my macbook 1st gen touchbar laptop even 1mm, I loos connection. it looks like its connected but its not. Also, my drives eject constantly. Thats a macbook problem more than a cable problem, but the two sides were ill conceived together. Lot of potential for USB-c, but its not helping me in my day to day life as a person who makes a lot of video and photo. Its just a lot of dongles and adapters and a heaping bag of cables. I now carry at least double the cables I used to.

The cable feels good, especially compared to other USB-C charging cables.

And people, please don't complain about the USB2 capability, it's clearly marked, read before you buy,

    Worst Charging Cable

    • Written by Summer M from Isle of Capri

I have never had an issue with MacBook chargers in the past and on the day before I have a 55% university assignment due, it stops working. This is the most expensive computer I have purchased as it was $3000 yet the charging cable in great condition, decides to not charge my computer. The man on the phone was very helpful as he understood the stress I was under but now I can say that I would not recommend a MacBook for anyone studying degrees due to the unreliability of the small, thin chargers. Ever since the charger changed to a USB C that is when the issues have begun. Appointments only available tomorrow so I have to just spend another $29 on a charger which I shouldn't have to do as this computer is well under a year old.

It's a weird cable... Will not charge using a USB C Charger that isn't PD.

    • Written by Kevin K from Etobicoke

It's just super annoying apple puts these hiccups into their products. This cable will not charge from a 15W USB C (non-PD) charger or through a USB A 3.0 to USB C adapter. Any run of the mill USB C cable off of Amazon would work better...

Cracked and kinked after only 5 months

    • Written by Elizabeth K from Downingtown

Very disappointed with the power cable for my new MacBook. After just 5 months it has kinks and one part is actually cracked with the wires exposed. My MacBook spends most of it's time plugged in at a desk or my bedside table - not traveling a lot. The cable for my previous MacBook Pro was great for over 4 years and is still going strong. The quality of this cable is poor (read the other reviews!) and unacceptable considering the cost of a MacBook.

I have used about 3 of these charges since I got my MacBook...with all three charges, charging is a hassle, I have to unplug and replug the charger several times, in several ports before it works. Sometimes I give up and just leave my laptop dead for the whole day. It is really really stressful and inconvenient.
