Used it once, now doesn't wotk

Bought the 'superdrive' with my iMac a couple of years back, no longer works. Connect it to my iMac via a working USB, nothing. Doesn't show up as a drive, won't accept discs, totally useless. Looking online it seems the only advice is 'Buy another one. Super it isn't.

    ok but need refresh

This dvd drive for Mac is ok but there should be an extenal dvd reject button as the cd keeps getting stick and it won't come out with out playing with the drives. Also apple needs the add colours like spance grey, gold, jet black and also needs to make a USB C moldel

Awful - I wish I had listening to these reviews before purchasing.

I would give this no stars if it would let me. Expensive and does not work. I would like to rip my CD collection to my iTunes library (don't get me started on that one either) if it's alright with you, apple. This CD player will not rip or even play CDs without spitting them out half way through, ripping half a track and moving on, audio glitches - do I need to go on? There's plenty of other CD / DVD drives out there for half the price that do the job.

    GARBAGE

Won't copy certain brand new cds onto my newer Macbook Pro. Not all, but a good 10% of my collection. Often it will get hung up on the last few tracks for some reason. NEW unblemished factory cds, with nothing in common with each other. I didn't notice it right away, of course. But it misperforms pretty steadily and regularly. And it started after I'd only used it a few times. AND a quick Google tells me that I'm not alone.

So, I actually have to haul out and plug in an ancient Macbook Pro with a built in drive when this happens. I mean. I wanted to trash this old Macbook but apparently Apple forgot how to make a CD/DVD drive so I'm stuck with this massive heavy 17" "CD Player" from 2010. Sad.

    Apple SupperDrive

I have just finished reading all the reviews and I'm just confused now, I have had a superdrive for over a year now and it has worked wonderful, but most of the reviews say its unreliable and bad.

It is a wonderful Apple product and I'm buying another one soon. Keep up the awesome work Apple!

    Frustrating and inadequate...

Disregarding the other reviews on here, I pulled the trigger on this so-called "SuperDrive" in order to do what one does with optical drives. I realize that optical drives such as this are, for many, about as necessary as grandfather clocks, home/landline telephones, and rabbit ears on a television, but sometimes I venture away from my customary vinyl/record addiction and occasionally purchase CDs. Thus, I need a way to get those CDs to the digital nether-regions of my iMac.

While this offering from Apple worked beautifully at first, and by "first" I mean during the first 48 hours, it began to completely fail to read CDs (CDs that were undamaged/unblemished). As if this is not frustrating enough, those CDs it did recognize/read, while actually "ripping" them to my iTunes library, it began to simply rip, for example, 9 or 10 out of the 11 tracks of an album. Again, the CDs themselves were not damaged, the tracks being skipped were not anything different than those which it did read/"rip," so this became even more frustrating of a process. Obviously such a "SuperDrive" defeats the purpose of having it, so back it went. Out came my aged LG portable player/writer which flawlessly and without hesitation ripped every CD with which it was confronted, including those rejected by the "SuperDrive," and it continues to perform wonderfully. Sorry Apple, this "SuperDrive" is a SuperDud.

    This thing is so slow

Just bought a MacBookPro late 2016 model which has no drives and no USB ports. But, this is the only external CD/DVD drive on offer. The rate at which I am copying some CDs into iTunes will take me until next year to get through the stack. Ugh.

    USB SuperDrive

Used it 3 times and it no longer takes the CD! Worthless. Come on Apple, your products should be way better than your competitors!!! Fix this for your loyal product users!

Had mine for around 18mo, no problems.

Works fine, no issues with reading/burning DVDs on my 15" MBP Retina. It definitely doesn't work well with cheap DVD blank media, has to use B-grade or higher. Can't use it with a hub, must be plugged in directly. Overall, a solid little box that does its job. Low review ratings are confusing as it's rated well elsewhere online.

    Patience is a Virtue

Because of the less-than-stellar reviews, I was wary about buying Apple's USB SuperDrive. But I own an iMac desktop, MacBook Pro laptop, iPhone 6, and several iPads and iPods. What other external drive would I buy?

I had the same issue as many of the reviewers. The first disc I tried to insert, tax software, immediately popped back out. I tried a music CD and had the same result. I called Apple tech support and the problem was solved by shutting down, unplugging the power cord for 15 seconds, plugging the power cord back in and restarting. After that procedure, I successfully installed the tax software without issue, and I'm listening to a music CD as I write this review.

I have always been a Mac person and while I'm disappointed a problem exists, I'm happy the problem was so easily solved. There is a definitely an issue with the drive that deserves a look from the engineers and designers, so I cannot give a 5-star rating. So far, it's working as expected, so I feel a 4-star rating is fair.

    DUMB

I finally gave up and bought a Samsung external DVD burner that ACTUALLY HAS AN EJECT BUTTON!!!!!!!!! And discs don't get trapped in it with no way to eject them. What a piece of garbage this Superdrive was. I can understand minimalistic and clean but Apple, really? C'mon. You put a disc in something, it's going to get stuck. Give me an eject button at least, don't make me use keyboard buttons and terminal commands that don't work 95% of the time. And this thing was SOOOOOOOOOOOO slow. The Samsung one rocks and is super quick. And I HATE all things Samsung. That's saying something.

Don't purchase - This drive is a dud!

I own a LOT of Apple products - I'm a big supporter and I do all of my work on Apple products. We purchased this drive in 2016 and it has never worked! The disc DOES NOT mount, and the drive NEVER ejects the disc properly. Luckily we don't need to use many discs anymore but on the rare occasion i give it a try and it has NEVER worked! Im still an Apple user/supporter but this drive is a BIG disappointment.

    Won't eject

Had this super drive for almost 3 years. The other day I wanted to import a cd to my library to download it to my iPod, everything went well until I tried to eject the cd. It wouldn't eject for nothing. I unplugged it plugged it back in still nothing, it would just make a whirring sound. Kept hitting the eject button no response finally out of options I just turned the stupid thing upside down and hit the eject button and low and behold it ejected the cd. Loaded the same cd in same thing it wouldn't eject turned it upside down it ejected. Repeated this several times. So if you run into this problem try turning upside down. I only use the superdrive to import cd which is very seldom. I agree with the other people this thing is a piece of junk. Apple really needs to redesign the superdrive. Not worth the money!!!!!!
