Updating 10.6 to it's most recent version (10.6.8) is free. Up"grading" to 10.8 would cost an additional $20.

  • With any version of OS X, you only pay for the 'major' release - minor updates are free. For example, when you buy Snow Leopard you'll probably receive 10.6.3. The major release number is 10.6, and the .3 is the minor release. To update from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 (the last minor release of Snow Leopard) is free, but to upgrade to OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion you would have to pay. Then to go from, say, 10.8.5 to 10.8.6, you would not have to pay.
