Going to Snow Leopard from Yosemite would be a downgrade, not an upgrade.
Snow Leopard will likely not install on a Mac that originally came with a newer OS X.
But Snow Leopard may run on a newer Mac (just won't install). Sometimes, if an external drive had Snow Leopard installed on it by an older Mac, a newer Mac will start up from the Snow Leopard on the external drive.
I am running OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on a Mac that originally was sold with OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion). OS 10.6 would not install. But it runs just fine on the newer Mac. I cloned an install of OS 10.6 from an older Mac, and restored the clone to a partition on the newer Mac. OS 10.6 runs just fine on my newer Mac. But it may not run on the newest Macs.
