If your Mac has a PowerPC processor, OS 10.5.8 is the furthest the Mac can be upgraded.
If your Mac has an Intel processor and at least 1 GB of memory, OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) is the furthest it can be upgraded. If the intel-Mac has at least 2 GB of memory, and depending on your Mac model ID, then you can upgrade to OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 or 10.10.
One must first install Snow Leopard and update to OS 10.6.8 in order to have the App Store app, through which one can upgrade to Yosemite (OS 10.10) or, if one has purchased a redemption code from the online Apple Store, one can upgrade to OS 10.7 (Lion) or OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
Please look up your Mac's Model Identifier and ask question again. The Model Identifier can be found by going to the Apple Menu --> About This Mac --> More Info . . . --> System Report --> Hardware Overview --> Model Identifier.
