Which Mac model do you have? What is the model identifier? Which processor does it have?
You should be able to do a software update to bring the OS up to OS 10.5.8.
Then, if you have a PowerPC processor, that is as far as you can upgrade.
If you have an Intel processor, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) and do software update to OS 10.6.8.
Depending on age of your Mac and if you have at least 2GB of memory, you can upgrade to later versions of the OS using the App Store app that is installed along with OS 10.6.8.
Note: the App Store app has the latest OS readily available (currently El Capitan OS 10.11). If you want OS 10.7 (Lion) or OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) you need to purchase a redemption code from the online Apple Store to download and install through the App Store app. OS 10.9 and OS 10.10 are no longer available, as any Mac that can run those two versions can also run OS 10.11.
