OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is your next upgrade. After installing it and applying all available software updates, you'll have access to the Mac App Store which is where you'll find more recent versions.

If you have a Mac with an Intel processor and a minimum of 1GB of memory, the next upgrade is Snow Leopard (OS 10.6).
Once Snow Leopard is installed and software updated to OS 10.6.8, you will have the App Store app. It is through the App Store app that all later versions of the OS can be installed IF your Mac meets all the hardware requirements. However, you can go directly from OS 10.6.8 to any later version of the OS if the hardware meets the requirements of that OS version.
Currently Yosemite (OS 10.10) is the version at the App Store. To get versions of the OS between OS 10.6 and OS 10.10 you will probably need to go to the online Apple Store to get a redemption code that will give you access to download and install the OS through the App Store app.
Please note that OS 10.5.8 is the last OS to support Mac's with PowerPC processors. So if your Mac is PowerPC-based, the OS can not be upgraded further.
