Your MacBookAir can officially run Snow Leopard (10.6) or Lion (10.7).
But the MacBookAir does not have an optical drive for the DVD. So you need either need an external optical drive, or the use of a Mac with an optical drive.
If using another Mac, try one of the following:
1) using Disk Utility: a) create a DMG file of the DVD and move the DMG to your MacBookAir. b) Create a new partition on your MacBookAir hard drive (about 12 to 16GB in size), c) Restore the DMG to that partition, d) restart your MacBookAir, hold the option key, and select the Snow Leopard install partition.
2) Using Disk Utility on another Mac, RESTORE the DVD directly to an external drive (including USB flash stick at least 16GB in size). (note: you may need to reformat the external drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) first. Use Disk Utility's "Erase" feature to do this.) Then connect external drive to MacBookAir and RESTART, hold Option Key when chime sounds, and select the install "partition" on the external drive.
For more tips do an internet search for "Install Snow Leopard on MacBookAir".
