Your iMac is likely from late 2006 or mid-2007 and has the Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.0 GHz.
Check your model ID. (Your model ID is found under Apple Menu --> About This Mac --> More Info --> System Report --> Hardware Overview.)
If the model ID is iMac5,1 (late 2006 white model), I believe one can have a maximum of 4GB memory but only 3GB will be used by the iMac.
If the model ID is iMac7,1 (mid 2007 aluminum model), maximum is also 4GB but ALL memory will be usable by the iMac.
With either model, put in two 2GB modules for a 4GB installation, or one 1GB module + one 2GB module for a 3GB installation.
