Check the amount of installed memory. Some early Intel MacBooks with Tiger installed only came equipped with 512 MB (2x 256 MB SODIMM's) of memory. Snow Leopard will refuse installation unless at least 1 GB (2x 512 MB SODIMM's) of memory is installed. The memory sticks aren't too difficult to swap out.
