If you want to make the upgrade to either leopard or snow leopard then you will have to free up some of that hardrive space as it requires at least 5GB of hard drive to install on so no you will have to free up some space. You could do this by backing up your hard drive to an external drive and storing all you data on there so you don't have to lose anything and have almost all your origanal har drive space free or remove some of the unwanted data untill you have around 5GB of space free to use. You will also have to have at least 1GB of ram installed to run either os x leopard or snow leopard.
