Will the iPhone 5 be able to use the 802.11ac?

Will all older devices be able to use the 802.11ac or just new and upcoming products like the mentioned MacBook Air?

  • Similar to the introduction of 802.11n, 802.11ac is a new standard. The iPhone 5 does not contain a chipset capable of 802.11ac. However, the AirPort Extreme will be backward compatible with 802.11a, b, g, and n.

In short, your iPhone 5 will work with the new AirPort as an 802.11n device.

  • Most devices will connect to it. For the best speed, the devices connecting to it will need to be equipped with Wireless AC band. All other devices will be limited to their individual capabilities.
